I don't have it in my hands yet, but I'm assuming there is no way to attach and aperture sight to the receiver without having hole/s drilled?

Are tang sights and option/available? I'm assuming the tang would need to be drilled also?

This is an original 110 year old 95.

Scott, if you Google "winchester 1895 sights" you will have lots of great photos to ponder your options. Good luck with your rifle. I am not familiar with the tang either to know if the tang sight holes are pre drilled. I bet Loggah or Lightfoot on the Savage forum would know.

Very few of the 1895's came with the upper tang drilled for a tang sight. But, a few did so you might be able to use an 1894 style tang mounted peep. The other "factory correct" peep would be to find an original Lyman 21 or 38 and have it mounted which, of course, means drilling and tapping the receiver. There is a 3rd much less common bolt mounted peep but I can only recall seeing that in pictures so I'm not sure exactly how it mounts.

The sight from Buffalo arms is a nice sight. It is supposed to use the same hole spacing as the original but I believe the screws have a different thread.

We had a couple come through the shop with the side mount thing and one with a bolt peep that looked original. Not sure. Glad you got that 95, great looking rifle.

Levers is correct. The Lyman side mount peep, either 21 or 38, was an original factory option from Winchester. It requires drilling one hole in the upper rear left receiver wall just behind the patent dates. The front screw uses an existing hole. Providence Tool Co. makes a very nice recreation at a fraction of what an original will cost you. You wont see too many tang sights on a '95. The bolt throw is longer than most lever actions and will hit a tang mounted sight.

With the bolt to the rear it comes almost to the back of the tang.

Something else to consider, drilling and tapping the rifle for anything besides the Lyman sight will reduce it's value.

My Marble's tang sight works very well but, yes, it must be drilled and tapped. There are even recreations of the original bolt peep, but they still have be drilled and tapped.

My 1895 30 government SRC has a williams peep receiver sight. I am gonna get a lyman 21 recreation for my 95 30 us SRC as it has a hole drilled in the patent numbers already. My ol eyes need all the help they can get. Thanks for the links!

Have never heard of, nor seen, an original Winchester bolt peep for a '95. M71, M64, M65, yes. Have heard of people mounting an XS peep on a '95 bolt though. If you have a link to an original '95 bolt peep picture, I'd like to see what one looks like.

If you are talking about my williams receiver peep on my 1895, I am not saying it is original, it fit the holes already drilled in the rifle and now I can hit stuff with it. I will post a photo when I get home. Thanks John

Providence lists them for $140. I think I paid closer to $120, but that was at least 6-8 years ago. FWIW, the same sight works on the model 71 and 1886...

Sorry Angus, I wasn't referring to your '95. A couple posters mentioned "original bolt peeps" and I've never seen one for a '95, so I'd like to see one if they had a picture link. I've seen several '95s drilled and tapped for sights like the Williams, but those were aftermarket additions. The Lyman 21 was THE sight for the 1895 and the Providence Tool model is a nice alternative. Original Lymans are pretty pricey these days.
