I've recently bought a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. The serial number is 6184**. The owner emailed me that the lever boss code is a number, 24. I was expecting a letter code. Do any of you have any idea about the year of manufacture? Thanks a lot!

It was made in the 50's, the early end of them. The guys on the Savage board can nail it down for you.

6184xx = 1951

The 24 is most likely followed by a "C" , easy to miss LBCs were oftentimes stamped very lightly.

LBC's
A=1949
B=1950
etc.

I had a copy of the LBCs but the owner says he can't make one out. I'll know more when I get it in my hands. I suspect Mike is correct in the 1951 date. I hope to have it by early next week! Thanks for all the help guys!!

what model is it Gary? being a 300 it's likely a EG but maybe not. with savages you soon learn to never say never.
they didn't pay strict attention to serial numbers.

I'm not sure. Of course, I would like to know though. Here's a link to the auction. What do ya think?

Why has the seller relisted it if you won it? It is an EG. Tom

I have no idea. Mistake perhaps; it does say "Item has been sold". I believe I'm good to go. smile

Only two models of 99 made in 1951, the 99EG with a schnabel tip on the forearm and the 1950's 99R with a fat and wide forearm with rounded end.

You'll like the EG, great rifles (which is why they sold SO many of them).

So, the primary difference between the EG and R is the Schnabel front end? That is good to know, thanks. Both of my 99s so far are E models (.308 and .243) with 20" barrels. I was looking for a 24" model with the Schnabel, and in .300 Savage. This one seemed like a good deal. We'll soon see I guess...

The 1950's 99R came factory d&t for scope mounts and sling eyes while the EG had neither at that time (d&t starting in 1955), but as far as receiver construction and barrels - they are identical.

In fact if you fitted 99R wood onto a factory d&t 99EG (or vice versa), nobody would be able to tell the difference.

Since having acquired my 1951 99EG, I've noticed that the cocking indicator was under the Weaver base. The base had been relieved on the underside to allow for the indicator pin. Both of my 99E models have the cocking indicator but it seems to be on the aft side the scope bases. When did this change come about? Thanks!
