Does anyone remember this article? Or was it on the "Guns of Ben Lily"?

I think he may have done a "Guns of the Arizona Rangers" as well.

I remember someone mentioning the 35 Win in association with Ben Lily which was a new one on me. (30-30 and 33 Win. I associate with Ben Lily).

I don't think it was Venturino, because he is not ( as I recall) a '95 fan.

I must have read the article in a Rifle or Handloader, unless it was in one of the special editions.

Sure like to hear from anybody who remembers the article or the reference, thanks,

Sycamore

I'm not seeing anything about Lily though.
thanks,

I remembered that article, forgot his grandfather had been a ranger.

I believe the reason for specifying 45LC and 30-40 was the availability of ammunition from the military.

I might have to dig out my copy of "legacy of leverguns".

Syc, I think we discussed this one night by PM.

Seems .30 WCF and .33 WCF were the only two ( per J. Frank Dobie) I had heard of associated with Lilly as well.

I remember seeing photos of an 1895 in .35 WCF that belonged to author Frank Bird Linderman that Kid Russell did some pretty fancy scratching on the receiver with his pocket knife, one night around an Arizona campfire!!!

Actually the rifle was engraved by Charlie Russell, the famous Montana cowboy artist in 1913. The rifle actually belonged to former territorial Gov. Hauser who had loaned it to Linderman indefinitely. Linderman wrote about it in a book about Charlie Russell.
"Kid" was Charlie's old handle from his cow punching days! smile

I would have loved to have been at that campfire and watched him do that!
It would have been something to see for sure!

Bob,

You're right. My (limited) Lily knowledge comes from Dobie, it seems like there ought to be more sources out there.

I was thinking either Venturino or Pearce might have brought it up, but it could have been Scovil(l) ?

Oh well, if any one finds something about this, it would be great to hear about.

Thanks,

Sycamore

There was an 1895 that Russell had engraved in a similar fashion on display at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum here in OKC the last time I was there. I presume the same one?

Yep that's the same one.
Thought so. I haven't been there is a couple of years, need to drop in again.
I remember an article on the 35 Win. I can't remember the author though. I think it was an article in the Rifle magazine.
From Load Data
there was an article in Handloader Issue 148

.35 Winchester (.35 WCF) in a Browning 1895 Reloading Data

Test rifle Browning Model 1895 with 24-inch barrel (rebored by R. Snapp). Iron sights (Lyman No. 57). All loads primed with Winchester WLR Large Rifle primers. Lyman No. 358318 bullets were fired without gas check cups. (Handloader Issue 148)

Also from Load Data

.35 Winchester (.35 WCF) in a Model 1895 Reloading Data

None of these loads exceed the pressure limitations of a .35 caliber M-1895 Winchester rifle in good mechanical condition. (Handloader Issue #59)

Also from Load Data

.35 Winchester (Venturino Lever Gun Data) Reloading Data
Notes: test gun: Winchester Model 1895 rifle 24" barrel; CCI-200 Large Rifle Primers; groups - five shots @ 100 yds. ("Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West")

Also from Load Data

35 Winchester / .35 WCF Load Data Reloading Data

Notes: .35 Winchester, Winchester Model 1895 24-inch barrel; Western cases, 187 grains unless otherwise specified; Primers, CCI 200; Oehler M-31 Chronotach, M-50 electronic screens; velocity at 15 feet instrumental converted to MV. Because of the great variation in the amount of use these old rifles have been subjected to, powder charges, pressures and velocities will vary from rifle to rifle. Bores that are in new condition will probably show much higher pressures than this rifle, and may not accept these charges. Therefore all charges listed should be approached from at least three grains below. All these loads gave long case life in the test rifle. (Rifle Issue #41 - September, 1975)

Last one from Load Data

.35 Winchester in a Winchester Model 1895 (Venturino Data)
Reloading Data

Notes: All chronograph figures taken with an Oehler Model 35P with start screen at approximately 6 feet. Barrel length: 24". Brass: Bertram. Primers: CCI standard Large Rifle. Bullets used: Hornady roundnose. (Rifle Issue #236 - March/April, 2008)
