Stupid question alert: I just purchased a Mystery Ranch Bighorn and received it yesterday. I am not familiar with this pack at all and have just looked it over very briefly. However, in doing so, I have a question of just what the intended purpose of the outside flap that buckles over the lower portion of the pack on the outside?



I initially figured it was just for containing a jacket or anything else that you wanted to strap to the outside of the pack, but it has stiffeners inserted into it and I was just wondering if I was missing some other intended use? Seems like extra weight if the stiffeners aren't needed. Wouldn't be the first time that something obvious alluded me...

I just got my Bighorn in yesterday to. Yeah it's just for jackets and what not. I can't remember what they said the stiffeners are for. I think they mention it on the page of one of the other packs that has the stick it pocket.
Did you notice the pocket you can put the waist belt in is big enough for a tripod?

It's for sticking the head of the raghorn you just shot.



Or the moose horns you just found

I've only used my Bighorn maybe a dozen times. The flap works great for holding (a couple)steel targets. Not great for alot of weight as it messes with your balance but under 20lbs works fine.
Flap should be ideal for skull/horns.

Side pockets are perfect for tripod on one side, spotter on the other. You can also stuff a revolver in the 'belt pockets'. Out of sight and easy access.

Great pack.

I have used mine for sheds, snowshoes, and bears, among other things. I really like the stiffeners in there, they stabilize things well.

The Beavertail was the only thing I didn't like about the Bighorn before i got it. Now it's my favorite feature. Really great design.

Thanks for the input, all. At least I know I'm not completely crazy now. I'm looking forward to putting the pack into use. Looks like all of you have had some success in that.
