Hey guys I have kuiu icon 1850 large / extra large set up with belt pockets.

I want something with more pockets probably 25-3500 size with load capabilities

What would you recommend?

If you have the frame, why not just buy a bigger icon bags and run that?

Kifaru!
Posted By: jmo1754 Re: Packs Kuiu vs - 12/02/18
I believe they are all set up the same.

Can different bags be ran on the new kuiu frames ?

Buy a bigger KUIU bag

I'm not sure

I have the Icon 3200 and my wife has the Venture 2300 and they have more pockets then we need.

Both of our packs have the same pocket configuration

The 3200 is a great bag. Plenty of space . I think the pocket setup is similar to the 1850 just bigger internal pockets.

How many pockets do you need? Any specific reasons?

I'd buy a new Kifaru pack. If new is too much, watch a couple of forums for a used one at a good price. Daughter just bought their new Muskeg pack and I liked it a lot. Made in USA is nice as well.

I have organizational ocd. I need stuff to have it’s place. Furthermore I’m 6’5 285. The kuiu pack is borderline uncomfortable with anything over 40 lbs
Posted By: 30338 Re: Packs Kuiu vs - 12/03/18
I'm 6'7" and Kifaru makes frames that fit tall guys. And if you like stuff in its place, several packs have a multitude of zippers, plus the option for more pockets where needed. Give them a shout anyway and see what they can do for you.

Thank you sir

Yep if over 40lbs is uncomfortable then that frame isn't for you. I did my first backpack hunt this fall and did 20-30 miles with 60-65 lbs on my Kifaru and was fine, and I'm not in shape (better now than I was a few months ago though ha). I'd looked at Kuiu, SG, Seek etc for a lighter pack but I love the customization of the Kifaru. I have a Reckoning, Guide Lid, Grab It II, 2 Medium Pockets, 1 Large Pocket, Organizer Pocket, Spotting Scope Pocket, Nalgene Holder, a Native, and a 26" Hunter frame. I can configure so many ways it's crazy. Love playing with it. Currently running the native without a frame for a treestand pack, added my nalgene holder, a medium pocket, and the organizer pocket to the PALs on the front of the pack. Can set up the Reckoning for anywhere from a gear intensive day hunt to up to a 12-14 day backcountry hunt.

You must not have the pack adjusted properly. I had two front quarters of an elk on my Kuiu frame last a couple weeks ago didn't find it uncomfortable (well, any heavy load is going to be uncomfortable to a degree).

I use both the 1850 and 3200 on the same KUIU frame. The ability to do so was a key factor in my purchasing decision.

My feeling about a lot of pockets is I always end up looking in every pocket for whatever I'm looking for. My solution is to use a few pockets, and, in the main compartment, use readily identifiable packaging (baggies, dry bag, etc.) to separate important items. I find it is much faster and more convenient.

There are a lot of adjustments to the KUIU pack/frame/belt combination. It is easy to get it out of whack and that can make it uncomfortable. KUIU doesn't really help if you aren't experienced with the adjustments. I'd love to see a detailed KUIU guide to the adjustments and tradeoffs.

At one time, I had prostaff purchasing for Badlands. I've owned countless packs from them, Mystery Ranch and now KUIU. I'll be the first to preach that you must find what works for you. Drinking the Kool Aid from one company or another could only lead to an uncomfortable pack. Sadly, I've see too many people with the incorrect pack size or one not properly adjusted. For multiple reasons, I am a huge fan of the KUIU pack system. Speaking from first hand experience, a KUIU frame not properly adjusted is not comfortable at all. I learned this after my brother made a minor adjustment to my frame.

Snap a side profile picture with the pack loaded with 20-25 lbs, and we can get the frame fitted right up.

BTW, the pack is fitted based on your torso length. Your overall height has nothing to do with a properly fitted pack. I'm 5'10" and my brother is 6'-5" (yeah don't ask what the hell happened to me) but we have almost the same torso length. He just happens have freakishly long legs or my are just short.

Did those KUIU pack frames stop breaking? They probably have that sorted out now.

Nope.

Saw a pic this year of one that was shattered. Sent to me by a very good friend who saw it in person.

Thank you huntem, that's helpful. I still need a little help as my load changes. I was on Kodiak a couple of weeks ago and I felt like I just couldn't get it right throughout the trip. The pack served me well but I don't feel I got everything right.

What year was the frame made?

Not sure. I'll keep beating the chit out of my kifaru with nary a worry and support American companies.

Kifaru for the win....
Posted By: Calvin Re: Packs Kuiu vs - 12/05/18
Kifaru for me. I have the Mountain Warrior bag, and a really old duplex frame. I'll probably get a new frame, as I got it 15 years ago, and it was a well used one off ebay. The kifaru packs are workhorses.

I hear you on that. Find what works and you don't have to worry about anything else. I am pretty big on Mystery Ranch packs, but I do have a Kuiu I bought out of curiosity.

Haven't used an MR in a while, but looks like they're putting out some good stuff these days for sure.
Posted By: ajmorell Re: Packs Kuiu vs - 12/06/18
I like my Kuiu Icon and haven't had any problems with it but I'm not sure I put mine through the abuse that others have. I can see how if the fit wasn't perfect it could be uncomfortable, for me it's spot-on. I don't think you can go wrong with any one of the names mentioned. If I was in the market again I wouldn't rule out Kuiu but think I'd give some serious consideration to a MR, Kirafu or Stone Glacier

Love my Kifaru pack...went with the tactical frame and the Nomad 2 plus the woodsman bag plus a few extras like the spotting scope pouch, guide lid and grab it. I have a couple of compressed/bulged discs in my back right where the pack tends to sit and the kifaru seems to ride good for me. Their service was top notch when I was buying and promptly answered any questions. Don’t regret my purchase.

Whatever you do, get a bag you can quickly pull off the frame for washing. Mine goes to the bathtub with oxyclean when the smell gets intolerable. Takes about four rinses but comes out looking like new.

For the guy who only hits the mountans for a couple weeks per year

The best bang for the buck is and always will be debatable

Personally I know there is better then my Kuiu on the market but I like my 3200 just fine for now.

Might be the odd man out but I love my outdoorsmans optic hunter. Super comfortable and I can pack a goat out with it.

A Western Colorado made Seek Outside pack should be included in your choices. I really like my Peregrine.
