I have a Colt detective special marked LW under serial number that dates to 1950, having a hard time putting a value on it.

Can't help with value or rarity, but it's sure off the charts with cool factor!
All I can find out is it's a transition piece from detective special to the cobra.
I've never seen one with a bobbed hammer stock.
This is a 3rd gen DS. Made 73-86. In 92-96 colt had its 4th gen, that offered a factory bobbed hammer. The serial number with LW on yours I believe does date this to 50's. So something is not right. Later barrel replacement? Hope this helps.
Someone installed a post-1972 barrel on an earlier Cobra frame.

I doubt that's stock. Colt didn't bob hammers on D frames, they have a proprietary hammer shroud they installed.
