First off let me say that I own a GP100 357 Mag and I love this gun. It is everything I wanted in a revolver. I am looking for a new concealed carry pistol and I am thinking about a SP101 since I like the GP100 so much.

Is there much difference is the size of the 2? The GP100 is to big for concealed carry but I think the 3" SP101 might just fit the bill.

Also does anyone have a picture of the 2 side by side? Thanks

Yes - considerable difference in size. If you like the Ruger trigger, you will probably like the SP101 too.

I don't have a GP100 - but if no one comes forward with the pic you want to see, I can post one of a 4" Security Six (essentially the same size) and a 2.5" SP101.

I have a 4 100 and a 3 101. The 100 is S&W L frame size, while the 101 is J frame size, if that helps any. Both are amenable to a very nice trigger pull, but they probably dont come that way from the factory.

As said above, there is a big difference in size. I have the 3" SP 101, but if you want to carry concealed there are several 2.25" models to consider. If you go the 3" 101 I would take a long look at the .327 Fed Mag. I wish it were in my budget right now. Also, finally, new models with adjustable sights though you likely are not wanting those to pack concealed.

I have a 3" SP101 as well and carry it concealed as much or more than my 4" Kimber Pro Carry. I don't have a GP100 to compare it to but here is a pic of my 3" SP101:

This last one should give you an idea of "Packin' Size" compared to my holstered 4" Pro Carry.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone will be along with some better comparison pics.

Thanks for all the info guys. I stayed up until 3 this morning and was able to find one pic of the 2 compared. I think the SP101 would make a good CCW. I'm sure there are better options out there but I haven't really found any that I like.

I also have no problem with the factory trigger on the GP100. Double action is a little long but single action I can love with for now.

The 327 Federal options look nice but I am not reloading right now and the factory offerings for 327 look very limited. Maybe this will improve sometime in the future.

Thanks again.

I agree, the SP101 is a fine choice for a CCW handgun. It is a relatively large and heavy revolver compared to the Colt Detective Special or the S&W J-frame revolvers. This isn't a bad thing. What it means is that you can safely and comfortably shoot fairly stout loads in it.

There is essentially no difference in the size of the revolver whether chambered in 38/357 or in 327 Fed, so I personally wouldn't bother with the 327 Federal. My personal caliber threshold for personal protection is 38 Special.

But it's your call, carry what you feel comforted carrying.

My 3 inch SP101 has been my outdoor companion for a few years. It shoots well, is very concealable, and holds some powerful rounds in a package that weighs 29 ounces loaded.
