On the advice of the counterman at a LGS, I bought a bottle of Weapon Shield gun lube. It was well reviewed at Midway USA and is described as A CLP. Has anyone here tried it? Opinions?

Supposedly an improvement on FP10 by the same inventor.

Thanks!

It's my preferred light oil. I don't much think any single product is a cleaner, lube and protector in the full meaning of those words. It's certainly true that Weapon Shield is a claimed improvement on FP10 and I suppose it is - there's some history there and it's all available. I am content to continue with FP10 if that's what comes to hand first.

To sum up I believe Weapon Shield is as good as it gets for light oil. That said I like lots of other products for lots of other purposes.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am a gun oil junkie. In the cabinet now are Weapon Shield, Break Free CLP for semi-autos, Gun Butter, Wison's Ultima Lube, Tetra and Mobil 1 5w-30. Primary use is for semi-auti handguns. Do you have any preference among those purely in terms of lubrication qualities? Or is there some other product not named here that you prefer?

Now if you want to spend a ton of money on extremely high priced oils, thats your business. But the lubrication demands of a firearm are NOTHING in comparison to that of an engine. Simple motor oil or ATF is well beyond what youll ever need for your handgun unless you are in the Arctic. CLPs are a fantastic thing for militaries; one stop shopping, easy logistics for everyone involved. Break Free is a VERY good product for its intended purpose and there are a few that are even better. But you have to recognize that a CLP is a compromise solution. Military CLP (Break Free) is a truly outstanding lubricant, a generally superior preservative, and a marginally adequate cleaner (but it IS adequate). So for military purposes, its damn near perfect.

For us civvies thoughI find cleaning with CLP to be just annoying. When I was a gun writer, I got EVERY cleaner known to man, all for free. With the exception of copper removal (the need for which is HUGELY over-stated), I have found that they all work much the same. The biggest issue by far remains nitro powder fouling and solvents for cleaning nitro powder fouling were mastered a little less than a century ago. Hoppes #9 cleans nitro solvent as well as any other solvent Ive used. Personally my favorite nitro solvent happens to be about the cheapest option; Eds Red (Google it).

For lubricant I put some Mobil 1* into a little oil can for a sewing machine and put a drop here and there and it works perfectly in all conditions. ATF would be even better but I have NO complaints about engine oil; the stuff was created for conditions far worse than anything I could come up with.

*I didnt choose Mobil 1 because its so much better than non-syntheticsit is a better oil than fossil oil, but even regular fossil motor oil is perfectly adequate for our needs. I chose Mobil 1 because thats whats in my motorcycles and thats what I happen to have on hand. And I have NO complaints about its performance whatsoever.

Thanks. Just dropped in briefly. Still busier than a cat trying to cover crap on a tile floor, and will probably stay that way until the move in September.

Kevin pretty much summed it up. Stuff like ATF is also a cleaner of sorts 'cause the additive package will soak up a fair amount of carbon.

I recently talked to a guy from US Ordnance and he said a little TW25 mixed with the appropriate weight synthetic motor oil for the operating temp would keep a heavy machine gun in working order longer than most anything else.

We figured out decades ago that ATF, with a little STP in high wear areas, would keep an M60 running longer than anything else.

The only new thing out there that just might actually be revolutionary is Fireclean. Gotta get me some.

I'm also using Mobil 1, I even coughed up the few extra bucks for the extended mileage quart, which I'm sure makes all the difference in the world.

I got a bottle of Slip2000 given to me recently and it's run fine. But I like looking at my AR and seeing it wet, which I'm just not getting with the Slip2000, so I'm about to switch back.

When my Navy SEAL friends told me that they used Weapons Shield I gave it a try - been using it for eight or so years - great stuff.

+1 to Clark's post. I ordered a quart of the stuff several years ago and think very highly of it. I did the same with the original FP-10 before that, so I've still got quite a lot of both on hand. I personally prefer Weapon Shield most of the time because its a little thicker which usually suits my needs better, but I was completely happy with FP-10 before that.

I'm kind of a lube nut too, and own several. For a do-all CLP I think Weapon Shield is a very good product.
