I just purchsed a Ruger SR1911 and was wondering if the fiber optic sight is worth the money.
A gunsmith friend of mine pretty much mandates them on his pistols...he's in his 60's so it really helps him. I was hoping to find a combo fiber/tritium but unfortunately there don't seem to be any for the 1911...or at least not for my SW1911PD. But a good fiber optic front sight is a very good thing. Just make sure you get a really high quality one. Some of the cheap ones have the fiber element fall out...not cool.
Lots of 1911's with FO front sights.
They are nice & I like them when there's light but useless in the dark; overall, I really prefer tritium.

http://www.10-8performance.com/s-w-1911-e-series-front-sight/The fiber optic tube will fall out of any of them. How well the tube is flared and fitted is a factor, but all of 'em will fall out if you flogged it as you should. Keep spares. You still have a functional steel front sight.

I have Tru-Glo Day Glo sights on a Kimber. I really like them. I also have a G21 with the same sights. The 1911 only has about 1500 rounds through it since I had the sights put on. The Glock has around 8,000 through it with no issues. I do not know if it is true or not but I have heard that getting solvents on fiber optic sights can contribute to them coming lose.
A bud I mine has the combo fiber/tritium on his G19, don't recall the brand. But they've been there for nearly a decade and semi-annual trips to Front Sight: nothing has fallen off yet. I know several IDPA shooters who have yet to have any issue. But I know of many who have had the element fall out. But like TAK said, you still have a steel front sight.
