Anybody else have some projects of goals for 2015?

I've got an M&P 9L on the way. I'm gonna do a Bluedreaux trigger job to it and have some Dawson sights on hand for it. I plan on mostly getting out of 3Gun for the year and shooting only pistol matches.

Anybody else?

I'm seriously thinking I might "need" an STI 2011.
Posted By: Bluedreaux Re: Plans for 2015? - 12/18/14
I've got one on loan to me right now that I've been finger banging like I'm in junior high again.

My wife told me to buy myself one (she even said to have one built) for Christmas and I backed out. It's just a lot of money. Plus holsters, "tuned" mags and carriers for them.
Posted By: Oregon45 Re: Plans for 2015? - 12/18/14
Going to get custom grips and holsters for most of my revolvers.

Shoot a lot more.

Maybe buy a Freedom Arms 83 and a Les Baer Boss .45

Likely buy or build an XP100 for silhouette competition.

GP-100 4" and lots of shooting. Might send my wife's 45 bisley to Huntington for an action job, custom grips and round butting.

I need to shoot more as well. A lot of my time is/will be spent working with my boys. Gonna have them start shooting USPSA as juniors. They've been shooting club matches and Rimfire Steel challenge for a couple of years. Guns, holsters, mags, ammo, etc, etc for 3 people. But, the fun is in being able to do it together and watch them as they grow, learn and excel in the sport.

I don't know if you're set on a Baer or not, but if not Hayes Custom Guns in Austin might be worth a look. He's done a lot of work for us and will be building mine if I ever do one. I don't know that he offers a 1.5" guarantee, but he posts pics of a lot of sub-2" test groups.

I did up a budget as well, for the same reason.

Load up all of the 10mm components I have been hoarding, then shoot them all up through my RIA Tac 10.

Lighten up a bit more on my 'mid range' 329PD loads, get its sights upgraded (OH how I abhor a monsterous orange ORB for a front sight!!) And shoot it more, too.

If some cash comes available, but the RIA 22TCM/9mm pistol, hoarde both kinds of ammo, and maybe add a 38 Super barrel to the package.

Biggest project, actually (and top of my to do/proporites other than get a new Kidney installed) is to finish up my Turbocharged Harley that will mimick the looks of a WWll fighter plane with the tigershark logo, bare metal etc. Maybe put a green canvas gun case on the front forks with a 30 Carbine in it.

Ditching a half dozen of one make can equal selling one....for some people..... whistle grin

Me, I'm looking for a job, but when I get the gig as the fulltime Coppertone lotion boy, it will be:
1. A four inch pinned/recessed blued 4" 57
2. A four inch 24-3 blued
3. A four inch 29-2 blued

Whatever 4 or 5 inch N-frame, I might snaggle it.

I did look at their Facebook page. Love the chrome and teal green Glock smirk grin

Most of their stuff would not be to my liking, but I do like the idea of the black nitride for a carry gun.

I am partial to Baer, as they are a good value, and I doubled my money the only time I've sold one (and wish I had it back). I have a Super-tac model, and it is way more accurate than me:

[Linked Image]

Nighthawk also makes some real interesting pistols. And in 10mm, which Baer does not. But they also cost a lot more, and may well be more highly detailed.

I've been considering adding a pocket size 38 - LCR or similar S&W. Would like to add some nice custom grips on my flat top 44 Spl. Have a FA 83 that came used with a scope and no rear site. Trying to decide between a small red dot vs. adding a factory rear site with F/O front. I added a couple holsters last year and will do a couple more this year. Other than that, shoot 'em all more than I have been...

I drove the wife and MIL 60 some miles to our nearest mall this evening, and upon dropping them off I lumbered the 'ol F-250 down the road to a well equipped fun store. Handled a few toys but the first one I asked to see is still first on my list for possible additions. That being the RIA combo gun with 22TCM and 9mm barrel/slide/spring kits. Seems to me that it should not be too hard to fit a 38 Super upper combo on it and have one frame for several calibers plus my nearly identical RIA in 10mm which I really like and have been surprised by, accuracy wise and every other way. RIA does not advertise a 1.5 inch accuracy guarantee, but the one I have will do it if I use sandbags etc. and concentrate.

Here's hoping smile

No mojo for one.

Little picky for my tastes too. It would outshoot the others, but only with specific loads. Otherwise when it came to shooting offhand, it didn't shoot any better than anything else. Especially with .431 sized commercial stuff.

And I was kind of pissed right out of the gate with the size front sight it came with and having to pay another $23.00 or whatever to get a correct size height. Some things piss me off, and that is one of them.

Absolutely loved the frame size. Love the round butt. Loved the accuracy potential. But not $2K worth of love. Which is fine. My buddy wanted it anyway.

grin The 610's not had any handloads through it. The warmest loads were Doubletap factory loads. Interesting that I did a test with it a couple years ago, and it consistently gave the highest velocity of 4 guns, and the other 3 were all 1911's.

12 grains of Accurate #7 is a good load under 155's, that runs about 1300 fps, and is safe with non-ramped barrels.

Link? Does "shot gunning" mean inaccuracy? I've heard horror stories about the old 9s, but have heard they fixed that with a twist change. In all the M&Ps we've been around (probably 30 or so) I've yet to see any horrible accuracy.

But I'd definitely be willing to check it out.
Posted By: DocRocket Re: Plans for 2015? - 12/19/14
You had me thinking about that M&P 40 for a few minutes this morning, Bluedreaux... but then I remembered my other projects and the cold hand of reason clamped itself around my wallet.
grin

I acquired several new revolvers in 2014 that simply haven't been wrung out enough, so while I'm not planning any new purchases along those lines, I'll be doing a lot of reloading and shooting to get these guns shooting as well as I want.

Also, after 3 years of not shooting IDPA, I went to Thunder Ranch's revolver school last month and had so much fun I realized I have to get back into SSR competition... so I'm gonna have to re-tool my Dillon 650 for 38 Spl and crank out some ammo so I can keep my 686's fed this upcoming season.

But I am in the midst of a renewed 1911 quest. I just picked up a S&W 1911SC, and I'll probably need to buy at least one more of those. Also, I've been bitten by the 460 Rowland bug and bought a conversion kit, but I don't want to put it on any of my current 1911's... so I'm going to have to buy another 1911 to put the Rowland kit on.

Sucks to be me. frown

On Commanders, I have a early Series 80 Lwt Commander frame, that was nicely customized by someone at some point. Nice checkering on the frame, good trigger, and Colt ambi safty. But apparently when it was re-anodized they removed enough material to make the rails undersize, so it's been sloppy with three different slides I've tried on it. And not just slightly loose, which would be fine, real loose. I think I may talk to Briley, who is local, and let them install accu-rails on it, and fix a couple of other things. That would turn it into a nice carry piece.

Then there is a Wiley Clapp Commander, which is real interesting, right out of the box smile

It's got some history to it. I bought it from BJ Norris, who said he shot it at Nationals, and I won the Ruger in the first match I shot with it.

What site was it? I'll see if I can find it.

M&Ps are quite a bit different than Glocks, in that they haven't done "generations". They just make upgrades as they go and new parts get used as they run out of old. So with Glocks it's easy to say "Gen2 17s had X issue". But with M&Ps it takes more work to figure out which models, made at which time frame, had issues.

It's good and bad. Glocks can have issues that run for a while without change. M&Ps get upgraded pretty often, but also get a bad reputation from older models and people don't realize that things have improved.

I have a Mauser action/Maple stock (with Rosewood forend tip and grip cap) 220 Swift that may become a 220 Weatherby Rocket this year. I will look forward to seeing what your rifle looks like all done up. What caliber? One of my (too many) projects for this upcoming year is to do some serious load development for that 220. It has a brand new ER Shaw 1 in 9 twist barrel and I have never played with an ER Shaw tube. It will be fun to see what it is capable of.

Shortly before the Barack reelection, things were looking really grim in a lot of ways, but particularly for the future of gun ownership. I reassessed my "collection" by asking myself, if ALL my guns were gone as of this instant, and I had to start over again, knowing what I now know, what would I buy? (Taking into consideration, of course, that I don't have an unlimited budget) And if I wouldn't buy it under that scenario, why do I own it now?

After a lot of thought, I put my revamping program on the fast track. I've since tweaked it slightly, like buying a Beeman R9 .22 pellet rifle due to the rimfire shortage since I can easily accumulate a lifetime supply of ammo on the cheap.

As a result, this coming year I don't plan to buy any more guns, but since I've finally been able to accumulate some rimfire ammunition, I plan to shoot my rimfires a lot more, maybe make a few tweaks on a couple existing guns, get a couple holsters, and now that I finally have a dedicated scope for each long gun, develop a load for each gun and have them all sighted in.
Posted By: Mannlicher Re: Plans for 2015? - 12/20/14
I don't 'need' any more guns, and don't really have the urge to buy something new.
I may well break down and pick up one of those 5 shot L frame .44 Mag S&W revolvers though.
If I ran across a Remington Model 7, Stainless, laminated stock in .260 Rem, or .243 Win, I might cave in.
Nothing at all in the tactikool area though. I have a number of AR, AK rifle, M1Carbines, M1A rifles.

I like the Beeman idea, and I have been thinking along similar lines. I have not re vamped my assemblage to any great degree, yet, but the hope to do so is there. I think you are making good decisions. Best to stay ahead of the curve in such matters.

When money becomes less tight, I plan to aquire a few guns in the very to stock common calibers and try stockpile some ammo for each. Still will hunt with my superfast wildcats for as long as I can, but having a good quality and unpapered guns in 30/06, 308, 223, 45ACP, 9mm, 22LR and 357, with a goodly amount of ammo for each, makes a WHOLE bunch of sense.

Maybe it will be in tomorrow?

I have a Mauser action/Maple stock (with Rosewood forend tip and grip cap) 220 Swift that may become a 220 Weatherby Rocket this year. I will look forward to seeing what your rifle looks like all done up. What caliber? One of my (too many) projects for this upcoming year is to do some serious load development for that 220. It has a brand new ER Shaw 1 in 9 twist barrel and I have never played with an ER Shaw tube. It will be fun to see what it is capable of.

Mark,
My Mauser project is a 6mm Remington, Douglas #1 s.s. 1/8 twist.
It's currently at the gunsmith getting the stock blank turned and
the shroud machined for a Wisner safety.
I expect it back any day now and will post pic's of the progress.
Hope I dont get in trouble for posting this on the handgun forum?

Nothing too specific - shoot my Vaquero more. Really had a lot of fun with that.

Going to get together a 6.5 Creedmoor I think and keep my eyes open for one of these:

Bearcat
1911 Commander from Ruger at a decent price
Could like a Ruger in something bigger/stronger than 45Colt too.

Maybe I can afford another Les Baer, after all...

WOW, that is just too much money for such a piece, IMO. That there is Python money, and a 610 - though a right fine revolver- is not nearly as smooth, refined, or good looking as a Python.

And I cannot see what a 10mm Revolver is better at than a nice 1911 in that caliber. If there is something it is better at, please do enlighten me.

Legally hunting with it in states that do not allow hunting with Semi Auto Handguns

gitem_12 is correct. Some states do not allow hunting witha semi auto hand. Pennsylvania is one of them.

The 5" 610's do appear to bring a premium. There was another 610 sold a little later, a 6" model with box, papers, and original grips, that brought a little less money than the 5".

I'm really, really looking at a 460 Rowland conversion right now... with a 2X-3X optic on it, it might be the perfect hunting handgun...
