Last night I was wandering around town wearing my Colt .38 Super which is a semi-BBQ gun. Blued finish, Nitre blued highlights (hammer, safety, sear pin, MSH pin, hammer pin, grip screws, slide stop, barrel bushing), and some Colt medallion elephant ivory grips.

I did up this gun as a shooter/showpiece but I don't own safe queens, EVERYTHING get shot/carried.

The gun is damn reliable and a rather decent shooter to boot, so what's not to like.

It's not my daily carry gun, probably carry it about one or two days a month. But the grip safety is worn smooth of finish, there's some holster wear, and the grip screws are worn smooth also; so she gets shot and carried.

Just wondering if anyone else carries a BBQ gun from time to time?

I think BbQs and 1911s are a natural pair

Low tech

Slow

And old, or "aged" if you prefer, can be used when discussing either item

That said I think a Pearl gripped Smith 65 3 inch in a full quill ostrich holster would be a great show piece

Same as the 1911 I carry whenever I carry the 1911: a factory nickel Series 70 Colt Gov't Model.

My uncle carried a BBQ gun all the time on duty. Colt Official Police, with a trigger job, nickel plated, stag grips. Looked real slick with his black leather issue holster. He could carry whatever he wanted as long as it was a .38 Special.
Mine would be the same 1911 I carry nearly every day.

As a little kid growing up here in TX, I was always fascinated by the old time TX Rangers, who mostly carried Ivory gripped custom engraved1911's in a floral carved El Paso Saddlery Tom Threeperson's holsters.

If you ever get a chance to visit the TX Ranger Museum in Waco, TX, they have on exhibit some fine examples of old 1911's that were actually carried by Rangers.

Add a hand-tooled belt holster, snakeskin boots, a white cowboy hat and aviators and you've got it covered.

I thought we were talkibg about Bbqs, not gay rodeos

I'd carry a Kimber Warrior, because its a favorite of mine. But likely I won't because the BBQ's I get invited to are by liberals with a sophisticated high school state of mind. So no BBQ's for this old phart. I stay home.

Here's a barbecue gun I hunt with: Bowen Nimrod, 45 Colt.

[Linked Image]

After I've lived with it for a few years, I plan on having it engraved. I had an engraving design in my mind when I had the gun built, but after I received it from Bowen my design just didn't seem to fit the purposeful, serious look of the gun. I'll let the gun write its own design over the next few thousand rounds.

Leather is incoming: Barranti Hank Sloan with a few custom finish modifications...

I think proper wood is important to any BBQ function! These are Mesquite Burl made for me by Zane Thompson in Johnson City, Texas.

Mesquite makes any BBQ better!

I might carry this, if I could find a holster for it:

But I think the ultimate BBQ gun would be a 10mm with a Caspian Damascus slide, and Chialis mammoth tooth grips...

Well call me what you want, but I've always gone in for the nickle .38 Super.

The first 1911 I ever saw in the flesh and held in my hand was a nickle .38 Super...it was kinda love at first sight.

I thought most carried SAA's, more of them in the museum than 1911's.

It would be my 44 Special that Alan Harton built for me 12 or so years ago. It's on an OM 357 with the top strap welded in and re-machined with an OM Single Six contour and rear sight. The front sight is one I sketched up. It is a 4 5/8" piece with Turnbull case colors on the cylinder frame. Beautifully made fancy walnut grips that my middle son found the blanks for in his Calgary high school wood shop. A work of art that I have carried elk and mule deer hunting.

I grew up as a kid in the 1960's. None of them were carring a SAA of any kind, by that date in time. As I said, most in That era carried a 1911.

….not sure if this is a BBQ gun or just a pimp gun, but it's the one I'd probably go with …… a Third Model Hand Ejector in .44 Spl.

that el capitan is incomplete, you need some gold on it somewhere.

I think the S&W version in my opinion is a lot better than the colt version. The action on the smith can be slicked up rather nicely.

IMO, it's a good "el Capitan" as is. Now, if he were going for "Generalissimo", he'd need gold accents and mother-of-pearl grips.

wink

Me too, plus the S&W fits my hand better.
