Looking to spruce up my close range deer hunting. So I picked up a blued version of this revolver and am impressed with its grouping.....I'd like to hunt it with 158 grain hollow point .....any thoughts, advice or suggestions are welcome....
If you are reloading, I'ld reach for full charge of Alliant 2400, H110, or 296. I personally like Matt's bullets 180gr hollowpoints as its softcast. Anything 158gr and up works fine though. My GP isnt picky, and deer are soft.
I'm not really impressed with the .357 as a hunting round, even out of a rifle barrel.
It will "work" but a 41 mag or 44 mag would be a better choice for hunting purposes IMHO.
I went with a 41 mag as even max loaded 158 out my GP were barely above minimum energy level of 400 ft. pounds at 50 yards for use in deer hunting.
The .357 has accounted for a lot of deer. A good bullet in the 158-180 grain will do nicely. It has more than enough energy if you keep the range to about 50 yards.
Thx..
I've set up a couple of spots where shots will likely be no more than 25 yds......hopefully closer....trail hunting in hard wood bottoms.
I killed 1 last year at 65-70 yards. Smashed through both shoulders of a small deer. That being said. I'll be carrying a Model 69 this year loaded at moderate 44 levels.

Unless there’s a minimum energy requirement where you hunt, I don’t see this as an issue. Deer aren’t hard to kill and energy is a poor measure of lethality.
Get a Weigand no drill scope base, and mount an UltraDot red dot sight, 30 mm tube, 4 moa dot.
Make sure cylinder throats are uniform and .358" . Many are not. My stainless 4 inch bbl GP100 had cylinder throats 0.355-.357".
Now after reaming the throats to .358" , accuracy improved from 4" at 25 yards to less than 1.5" @ 25 yards.

Can those no drill Weigand mounts be used on a Ruger Security Six? Anyone know?
Website doesn't list them, but you might try calling.
Mike
Was the front sight on security six a removable dovetail?
