ok fellas i bought a used in great shape cz 452 american in 17mach2 and i'm just not getting the accuracy that i believe it outta do. i've got numerous cz rimfires that'll do at least half inch 5 shot groups at 50yd. well this one will shoot half inch groups only with the made of unobtainium eley and just barely .5". everything else its very erratic. the rifle is not free floated which my other cz's are. so, for all you guys that have said rifle is your free floated?

All the Americans I have seen were free floated. I would float it as all my 22LR Americans have shot great..

Having said that, the American made 17 mach II ammo has never been as accurate as the Eley stuff in most rifles.

Eley 17HM2 ammo was basically match grade, nobody else has made ammo of that quality.

I have some recently purchased CCI ammo with the yellow tips that is quite accurate, but not as consistently accurate as the Eley with blue tips and Remington with brown tips that was made by Eley.

None of the 15.5 grain NTX ammo shoots good groups in any of my rifles.

It may very well be the wood putting pressure on your barrel. I had two 452's in 17mach2 and both would shoot well under an 1" at 100 yards easily with Eley ammo. I only sold them after Eley stopped making the ammo and I was concerned about future availability of ammo.

so, to update i did float the barrel and it had a shiny silver spot where the barrel was contacting the fore end and also a shiny silver spot on the right side of the barrel where also the barrel was contacting the stock. i used a,i believe, 12mm deep well socket wrapped in 60 grit sandpaper to float and smooth her up. now a 100 bill will slide from fore end to action without encumbrances. i've not shot the rifle since but will update on whether this tightened groups up or not.

I gave up on the M2 because of the quality of current ammo. Too bad they let it slip away like that.

thanks fellas. the new cci vnt has shown promise with (2) 50 yard 5 shot groups with 4 of the 5 going into .3" then a flyer a half inch away. hopefully this float job clears that up and it really likes the cci vnt as it's fairly plentiful at the moment.

I had a 452 silhouette .17hmr with a 16.5” barrel that I fought accuracy issues with. Could only get about 1.3-1.5 out of it at 100 yards. I also sanded the barrel channel to get 100% free float. Very little to no improvement.

So I then tried tuning the harmonics with the action screws, that’s when I noticed the front action screw was just bottoming out and wouldn’t turn with increased torque on my tonque wrench.

I removed the screw, filed about a thread off and BINGO. Instantly started grouping under .75!

The screw was hitting the barrel and tightened up the bottom metal at the exact same time.
This is a known Cz issue…..

For some stupid reason I sold the rifle. It did go to a member here and he and his grandsons have killed 100’s of pdogs with it.

I see that Savage still makes their A17 autoloader in M2. That should be an interesting little squirter. Under $400 street.
