I've got "This old gun". It has holes at the rear end of the left side of the receiver approx. .41" CTC. I presume for some type of receiver peep sight. Anyone have any idea what fits that description and where I might find one to fill the holes? Preliminary looking seems like a Redfield 70IT might fit the bill.

Thanks.

No expert, but I don't think the factory drilled them for receiver sights, just tang sights. I suspect someone had it drilled for a sight they had on hand. The .41 spacing is narrow, it was used on Marlin and Winchester lever guns, I believe post-war Remington pumps and autos used a wider spacing. In any case, you need the levergun sight, the cheapest route is a Williams, if it's sold for a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94, you should be good. I just returned a really nice Redfield 70 advertised for a Winchester 94 because the spacing was wrong. A 1966 Redfield brochure doesn't show any receiver sights for you rifle. Mine has the Marbles tang sight.

Thanks dutz. Yeah, no question that the holes are aftermarket. I just want to fill them up with something appropriate-the damage is already done, so to speak.

There’s a Lyman sight that appears correct. 66 R-12. There are a couple listed on eBay, but I don’t know is the hole dimensions are correct-waiting for a reply.

The Redfield model number (70IT) I got from a 1943 ad listed on eBay.

Have I have a 12 and a 121 that belonged to my maternal grandfather. Neither are D&T.

At the top, back of the receiver there are screws that are there to place a tang "like" sight.

At least on my 121.

That is what I would love to put on this, but I've got these additional holes on the side of the receiver that I want to fill in.

Might as well put a period sight on it and fill the holes.

I don't think the factory would drill through their name. I was wrong about the sights, they did make them for 121's, but I don't know what the spacing was. If you go with a tang sight, get the Lyman. I have a Marbles on mine, but only because it had one before and now there's a hole in the wrist to fill, Marbles used a screw at the back of the sight. The Lyman is more nicely made and much easier to adjust.

the 121 was drilled and tapped for a Lyman A12 peep site IIRC, pretty hard to find but they do come up for sale.

Success! Filled the extra holes appropriately.
