My son and daughter were each gifted a new, used rifle.
One is a Winchester 74 and the other is a CZ 452(?).
I would like to scope both with one inch scopes.

Can someone with experience with either rifle give me some clues and advice on mounts?

Thank you,

stumpy

You'll need higher than necessary rings on the CZ to get the bolt to clear the ocular bell. Thats the only complaint I have with my 452. After buying a handful of medium mounts with the hopes I could keep the scope low, I ended up with some CZ mounts to get the clearance needed.

I put gloss Burris rimfire rings on my 452 in high and there bout perfect, I thought it would effect cheek weld but it is not an issue, plus there is not a huge gap bettween glas and barrel.

Is it possible there is no place for the dovetail ring on the front? Behind the iron sights there is a shallow divot (about the size of a pencil eraser) and no dovetails like above the bolt handle.
Is that high Burris rings?

Mine is a 452 American and it has a dovetail cut, not sure what model you have?

Im not sure if the 74's were grooved for scopes near the end of production around 1955 but if its not you will probably have to drill and tap the receiver to scope it. Its your gun but it would be a shame to d & t that old winchester if its not already done. Just my 2 cents, do as you want, of course.

I have a 452. I sent an email to Talley, told him what make and model scope I was buying, and asked him to pick a set of rings for me.

He did. I'm happy. I can recommend same.

I picked up a new CZ 452 recently and stopped in a Wal_Mart and picked up a set of Weaver rimfire rings for a one-inch scope and they worked just fine.

I put a Sightron 3x9x40 (not the rimfire model) on it and it has adequate clearance between the bolt handle and the rear objective.

I believe that the rings were all of $5.99.

Not fancy looking or upscale but they work and the price was right.

p.s. - the 452 CZ is a great shooting little 22.
