Posted By: Mikem2 Browning BAR 22 or BPR 22 - 02/16/10
Was checking these out at a gunshow over the weekend. Have not seen many of either model and they are no longer made.

The BAR-22 is a semi-auto .22 LR, tube feed, very similar to the BAR centerfire in design. The one I looked at had an English stock and Aluminum alloy receiver, the seller wanted $499. A few stock scratches/marks, no metal marks, and in dire need of a thorough cleaning.

The BPR 22 is a pump rifle, this was a .22 caliber, a .22 magnum was also made. The one I looked at was near new in box condition, really clean, for $495.

Anyone have any experience with either of these, the semi-auto or the pump? Accuracy, cycling, etc.

Thanks for the info.

I have owned both and the pump i owned was the 22 magnum version, of the two i prefer the pump over the semi-auto version. Just my preference because both are good rifles.

I own a Browning Belgian pump manufactured in 1948 according to the serial number. When younger I could oushoot the autos for speed and accuracy. That was with my Dad's which is the prised property of my brother. Mine had an odddbal rear stock on it when I bought it, so I used Dad's as a template to restock mine. They are a really fun little rifle to shoot.

The newer pump you saw was a lot different than the ones medicman and I have. Ours were made in Belgium by Fabrique Nationale d'armes de Guerre. FINE little rifles that will still drive tacks. wink

Thanks for the info on the Brownings!
I did not realize FN manu'd a variant of this model in the late 40's.

One piece of information was the cost of manufacture for the more recent models resulted in their being dropped from the product catalog.

Actually a pre manufactured pump would not be considered the variant, the later manufacture might be. Ours are soft rounded contours versus the more square BAR look alike. No doubt the newer one is well made.

Winchester and Remington made look alikes that were inferior in my estimation, though some liked them. Dad's was a drill -- still is, if your eyes will handle the fine sights.

I own both the BAR and the BPR. I did own three BAR .22s but I sold two and kept one that is very, very nice. My BPR is a .22 magnum. It's kind of a handy rifle. It would make a good truck gun. Browning makes very nice, high quality firearms. I own quit a few Browning rifles, shotguns and pistols. $499.00 is right in the ball park for both rifles. I would buy the 22 magnum if it were my decision. They are not as common, at least in my experience. I don't know how many of each that Browning made. The BAR comes in two styles, pistol grip and straight grip.

Thanks for the info. The BPR is the one I am leaning to, but both are very nice rifles.

How is the accuracy with your BPR?

The BPR I am looking at is a .22 lr, if it was a .22 magnum, easy decision!
