I would like to hear what you like and don't like......... scope will be going on a bolt action 22lr!

Except for price ... There's not much not to like.
Posted By: jpb Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/21/14
I've had one on a .22 rimfire for, I dunno, 15 years?

Never changes point of impact, tracks perfectly, is a nice size to look good on a .22 sporter. The scope has good optics too.

Oh, when I first acquired a .375 H&H, I didn't have a spare scope so I moved my Leupold 3-9x EFR over. The recoil was no problem either -- Leupold says their "rimfire" scopes are fine with big bores (or powerful spring air guns, which are even harder on scopes).

The "tacticool look" has become rather popular, but unless you are going to shoot your rimfire beyond 100 yards, a big variable won't have much advantage over the trim Leupold rimfire.

I like the 3X9 but prefer a little more magnification for target work. The VX2 4-12 AO fine duplex is a great compromise in size, weight, and magnification if you shoot as much target as hunting. If you hunt more than target shoot, I would go with the 3X9 EFR.

The 4-12 AO will focus on 12X at 20- 25 yards and closer on lower power. A Weaver V16 is another good RF scope but a bit larger and heavier than the Leupold 4-12.
Posted By: Ackleyfan Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/21/14
I probably would not hunt it much except for varmints and a lot of informal target shooting right now, extra power would be nice ,I'll have to give the 4x12 a look!
Posted By: cisco1 Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/21/14
I have prolly 12 of these on various sporters. From S/A 54's , Winchester 63's, Winchester 52's. Some 2X7 Leupolds.
I am slowly replacing all my scopes with 1st focal plane scopes. Not fitting up any more EFR Leupold. Not bad scopes just moving on.

You definitely want the AO if you want to wring out every bit of accuracy. At 50 yards on 12X you can easily center cross hairs on a 22 hole.

Good info guys, AO is definatley on the list thanks!

Good to hear all the positive reviews on the 3x9 EFR leupold, just put one on my repo 52, looking to get out and sight it in this weekend.
Another + for the EFR Leupold. As someone said a little pricey but you will not be disappointed in the scope. I had a regular 3-9 Leupold rifle scope on my .22 and of course parallax was bad. The EFR took care of that and helped on the range and in the woods.

I'm with R H Clark on preferring more magnification for target shooting, but do have the 3-9X EFR on a 10/22 carbine. It's a great scope to put on a compact rifle for general plinking or varmint work around the house.

I have the 4 x 12 Leup fine crosshair on my Cooper. The only complaint I have is that the crosshair can be a little hard to see near dark when squack hunting, at least with my eyes. Other than that it's a great scope. I have not had the 3x9 EFR to compare the two.

I don't have one but I have a friend that loves the Nikon 3x9 EFR with the (I think) 1/8" dot.

slg888 has the nikon 3x9 efr on his Cooper and really likes his, after talking with stoney about his Nikon I had it narrowed down to the Nikon and Leupold 3x9 erfr, then Clark threw the Leupold 4x12 AO in the mix and made my decision a little tougher...still trying to decide! smile
Posted By: FyrepowrX Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/23/14
have the 4x12 Leupold on a couple of rimfires, and its a tad less critical of head position/eye relief for me.

Also have the 3x9 AO on a couple, and i do like the compact size. and i would lean that way if this is a hunting rifle...if shooting more paper, i might go the 4x12 AO...

and, just to make it MORE confusing, the Bushnell Elite or B&L Elites, both the 3000 or 3200 series, make great rimfire scopes, focus up close nicely, and are of similar mass to the Leupold 4x12.

Posted By: navlav8r Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/23/14
I have one on a Remington 541-S and really like having the ability to correct for parallax at different ranges.
I've got a Leupold 3X9 EFR on a Sako Finnfire, and it's a Great scope!

But my all time favorite scope for rimfires is the Leupold VX 111 3.5X10 A.O.
just a little brighter and a little more "eyebox"
And still parallax adjustable down to 25 yards for those close in shots.

Virgil B.
I like my 3-9 EFR, although I'm not a real fan of the Compact Leupold series in general. The A/O does help get down to very close ranges. I have a 50' range above my shop and garage. It's nice to get perfect parallax settings.

My favorite of all rimfire scopes is a Kahles 2-7 now on my Cooper Classic. That combo is hard to beat at about any price. It has 50 yd. parallax and isn't as good on the 50' range but is tough on squirrels, better in that application than the 3-9 EFR, IMO.

Double check my info but I believe the Nikon EFR is 1/2 inch adjustments at 100 yards. If that is correct it's 1/4" at 50. My groups at 50 are tight enough that 1/4 off isn't acceptable.
Posted By: Ackleyfan Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/23/14
I believe your correct!
R_H_Clark: I think you misspoke when you stated your groups "could be up to 1/4" off at 50 yards" - with the 1/2" adjustable click scope at 100 yards scope?
IF... your groups were 1/4" to far left at 50 yards then you should simply move the adjustment 1 click to the right and that would put your groups dead center (1/4" more back to the right!)!
I think the most/maximum your groups could be off at 50 yards is 1/8" (.125") with the 1/2" click adjustment scope?
Am I not correct?
In other words if your groups center was 1/4" to far left at 50 yards simply adjusting it one click right would make your groups center dead on with the 1/2" adjustments at 100 yards scope.
I have a case of the dyslexia so I could be wrong - but I have been adjusting scopes for 52+ years now using the above method/contention.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Between those mentioned, my choice would be any of the Leupolds. I live, work and play in the USA and, if there's a choice, that's were I want the products I buy to be made. I have a 3-9 EFR and can't imagine a better all around rimfire scope. If targets are the main usage, then more XXs might be more desirable and the 4-12AO would fill the bill.

You may be right. I still want a scope that adjusts as fine as possible. I play a game where I have a target with multiple bulls. The X on each bull is the diameter of a 22 bullet. I try to see how many 1 shot X's I can hit per target. It's just informal but fun for me. If my scope were off even 1/8" I could miss more X's than I hit.

Give it a go sometime. here is my target that I like to shoot at 50 yards.

Well it pulled up all the targets. I shoot the 1" Bullseyes target right under the Ram targets.

Nice rifle. That stock compliments it very nice.
R_H_Clark: Thanks for the link - there are several cool targets there - I will wait for the VarmintWife to help me download a couple of them.

3-9 EFR on a CZ 2500, a rather unusual gun I picked up at a gun show several years ago, the stock painted red. It has a 29" bbl. and really shoots.

If you consider weight, size, and magnification, I don't think there is a better rimfire scope available.

They are an awesome rimfire scope for hunting and casual target shooting.
Posted By: jt402 Re: Leupold Rimfire 3x9 EFR? - 09/26/14
They are not just for rim fires. Mine, over twenty years old, has lived on a springer air gun, a .22 LR, and on a .243 for lots of years. I recently removed it from the .243 in view of going back on a .22. Because of the difference in ocular bell size, I had to go higher rings to clear the bolt on the .243 with the new scope. I'm not sure I like that. A new 3-9 EFR may be in order.

Some folks fuss about the smaller ocular. I have never found it to be a problem when matched to the proper height rings.

The Leupold 3x9 was always my first choice for a rimfire scope. Then I purchased a Weaver 3x9 with AO and stopped buying the Leupolds. Weaver is clear if not clearer and the adjustments are precise and you can find them on sale for under $200.

The Weavers are good scopes. The V16 is a very good rimfire scope as if a guy wanted higher magnification. Lower priced than Leupold but a little larger and heavier.

Excellent !
I agree, the VX-2 4-12 is my most favorite Varmint/Target scope for the 22LR.
Though I've been happy with the VX-2 2-7x33 on a couple 22s as well

Got these two yesterday.

That's a sweet set up! please give the details. Is that a custom 10-22?

On a side note, I just scored a brick of SK Subsonic HP, which is my favorite squirrel load in 22 LR.

This post is perfect for me. I have been thinking of buying the Leupold EFR rimfire scope but like others...the price is the only negative. I need to go see what the VX AO 4-12 fine reticle cost. Will also check out the Weavers too.

I need to get a scope for target shooting too. I have an older Leupold 12x AO that sat dormant for a few years and pulled it out and was surprised at how much clear it is on my load development. So I need one more and possible two to put on my Lefty CZ. So many decisions to make...

For a slightly lower price Clearridge gets great reviews at www.rimfirecentral.com

It is said to have better adjustments than the Weaver and priced less than the 3X9 EFR Leupold. Made in japan if I'm not mistaken. Focus to 10 yards.
