trying to dust off and complete an old project...

Years ago I acquired a 10/22 International. Piddled around with it but never took it too seriously. Got interested in the 10/22 Deluxe models with the walnut stock, and even bought one used stock off Feebay (which turned out to be birch )

Fast forward to this summer, Midway had Shilen sporter weight barrels on sale for 20+ % off, and also listed Ruger Deluxe, jen-u-eine walnut stocks for sale, though on backorder. Shilen's barrel is a perfect fit in the receiver; if it were .0001" larger in the shank I'm not sure it would fit.

Exhibition wood it's not, but to me it makes a pleasing, sleek little 22.



I may yet work on the trigger, although it's fairly good for a stock 10/22, and also try some different scope mounts. It will probably get a Loopy of one sort or the other, at least 6x, maybe even a 3x9.

For those who have worked with a wood stocked 10/22, how did you go about bedding it? Any special tricks or just a normal Acraglass job? Did you float the barrel?

Bedded full length, barrel first then receiver. Surg tube on the barrel when the receiver was bedded, action screw barely snugged.

So much better looking than the standard 10/22 carbine that everybody has. I bought my 10/22 in 1999. Carbines were $150. Deluxe was $200. I went with the Deluxe because thats what dad had, and I'm glad I did.

I have three Ruger 10/22's and all of them have "Deluxe" model stocks on them.
I think the Ruger 10/22 Deluxe style stocks are VERY handsome and I wish I had gotten in on that sale of "Deluxe" stocks myself!
My main go to Gopher shooting 10/22 has a Lilja heavy stainless barrel on it and for most of its life I had a Leupold 4x12 variable with A/O on it.
It now has a 6x24 power variable on it (with A/O), of a brand name I don't often speak or type in public.
But it shoots REAL well as now configured.
I say don't hesitate to consider a higher powered variable for your nifty Rifle - I, somewhat often, make head shots on Ground Squirrels with my 10/22 out to 100 yards or so!
I hope your 10/22 project Rifle shoots as well as it looks.

OP, how does it shoot? Curious how it does with that Shilen barrel. The stock looks really nice. I'm a CZ guy but that sure looks nice.

I build one for my dad that looks just like that. Shilen barrel is excellent at 50 yards. I went with a Nikon Rimfire Target EFR and some Volquartsen trigger parts. Smooth, pretty and accurate

I just picked up an early deluxe stock to fit to my AMT Lightning (stainless 10/22 clone).

10/22's are huge fun at the range and the out of the box accuracy is usually almost good enough for all of us. Almost....Thousands of after-market parts can easily get your 10/22 down to below .25 inch at 50 yards without to much expense at all. Now if 22lr wasn't so darn hard to find by the case life woud be even better.

I also use Nikon's PROSTAFF 3-9 EFR scope on one of my 10/22's, the other wears the PROSTAFF 3-9 Rimfire BDC 150 scope. Both function great and have even let me ping steel crows at 200 yards.
