If anybody has one of the Ruger 77-17 WSM's how do you like it, pro's-cons. Overall quality. Overall accuracy and realistic accuracy at 200 yards? The ones I've seen in shops have a lot to be desired on walnut quality, would be nice to have the laminate stock option. Thanks

Check-out RFC, they have a few posts regarding them .. some love'em, some not so much. Bland Walnut beats the looks of laminate every day in my book .... don't take that the wrong way, I have two 77/22's with laminate stocks, but would rather have walnut. YMMV

same here, if i have the choice between the two most likely the plain walnut will win out every time. i guess there always could be an exception but that would have to be one ugly piece of walnut or one really nice looking laminate.

Thanks guys, regardless of stocks, how is the accuracy, and best brand of ammo with best results. Thanks

The biggest downside to the rifle,is the Walnut stock. Living wood sucks ass as a handle material and should be reserved expressly for a fireplace.

Tough to beat a 77/22 for rugged reliability and laminate Trumps living wood,by lightyears. It'd be a match made in heaven,to find a sucker foolish enough to accept Walnut in trade for their laminate.

All of the 77/22 VT's have too much barrel length on them and a chop job really brings the platform around, whether 22LR,Mag,Hummer,Whizzum or Hornet/K-Hornet. 20" is a nice place to be for balance/handling...in all of those chamberings.

The 17WSM chambering in and of itself,is simply fabulous. It's blend of Precision and Performance, simply must be seen,to be believed. Have shot several flavors of ammo through the chronograph and it's consistency is surprisingly good, while hauling ass.

Assuming some attention to the 77/22 stock's inlet, some bedding and a trigger tweak(the stone/re-spring is as effective as Aftermarket and I've got SpecTech,Dayton Traister,Rifle Basix and Timney),the rifles settle right down in their consistency.

With 5 minute epoxy it's a 10 minute job, trim everything purty then yada,yada...yada,the usual. These all tend tend to like a CH of tip pressure and most of mine get FL bedded in accordance. The OEM handles are often really loaded with tip pressure. Hint.

With a 10x MQ zero-stopped in the saddle, steering 20gr V-Max at 3000fps,one can crank .5 MOA 100yd clusters,if that is their idea of fun. With a 150yd zero(+.7" at 100yds),the windshield will take you to the 675yd line. 5 Mils of full value 10mph wind, transpires at the 650yd line. The chambering is a mind blower and a real Hammer.

200yd paper will happily toss sub MOA clusters, assuming an Operator with a clue.

They are BAD Bitches...............

Stock sucks, trigger sucks, barrel is too long. That being said I love mine! I have a 6x MQ on it but may swap it with the 10X. Its very accurate and the barrel and trigger fixes are easy. Soon there will be replacements stocks available too.

Looks like a $1000 crap shoot with the Ruger. Some reports are good, others not. Too bad, I'd really like to try one but the odds are not great getting a good one.

from what i have read on RFC the stock for the hornet is the same for the WSM so there should be plenty of aftermarket stocks to choose from or even an older hornet stock in nice walnut if one was to shop around.

True, but possibly the oogliest, cheapest looking rifle Savage has ever made; a considerable distinction.

I thought all Savages were like that

$1K (or damn close) is retail. $750 seems to be the going rate - about twice what a CZ that will likely shoot circles around the Ruger runs.......hopefully CZ will come out with a .17WSM soon.

A rifle that doesn't exist at half the price of a Ruger should probably sell for considerably less.

I was going to add something snarky about there being no ammo available but Midway has a good bit in stock at 30-some cents per round. Not bad, but since I can get good .223 for 40-some cents per, I'll pass for now. Looks like fun though.

Cabelas has had ammo for a good while. I'm seeing at Walmart now too.
