Just got done making some prototype steel Remington 581 magazines I am looking for two or three guys that are willing to put them to the test to see how they function. Must be willing to run at least 500 rounds through and see how they function. I also address the problem with the old magazine where if you don't cycle the bolt fast that it tips up the back end of the cartridge and keeps it from chambering without pushing it in with your finger. These magazines will hold six rounds and they are in the white as I didn't finish them. If anyone is interested in helping me see if they will function, contact me @
[email protected]. I will be charging $65 each for them once I start production which I think is fair because the cheap plastic Remington ones are going for $45 used. The testers can keep the magazine for helping me out.
I would have loved to try one when I had my 541-T. My only REAL complaint with the factory 5-rounders was the fact that they protrude from the mag well and ruin the lines of an otherwise very good looking rifle. Will yours fit flush with the bottom of the stock? If it does, I may hunt down another 541-T for the heck of it. Great rifles.
I have several 581's and 541's I would be glad to help you with this test.
Jim
I would like to try one in my custom 541. It's a 581S receiver and functions flawlessly.
Found the 3 testers, going to start a production run friday. Addressed a few problem with the remington factory mags.

Right now there the same length as the factory 5 rounders, but could make a program to make a flush fit 4 round mag, also going to make a steel single shot mag like the winchester 52s

Dammit, man! You're giving me the urge to hop on gunbroker and find myself another 541-T!
Making these would be a GREAT service! I love my 541-T, but, like many the cheap plastic magazines just don't match the quality of the rifles. The flush-fitting 4 rounder is a really good idea too!
One of the biggest problem I fixed with the factory mags is that you can cycle the bolt slow without the round in the mag releasing and jamming the rifle. All my factory five rounders do this, as it releases the shell to soon.
I'd love a flush 4 round magazine if you make any......dammit man that would neat!!
Also note that these aren't sheet metal mags there made from solid steel stock
Sounds like you have enough testers. I'll be interested in getting some for my Rem 541 when you have production versions.
This is sounding really good. Love the idea of a flush mount 4 rounder.
Checkering hasn't been done yet, but it sure looks off a bit with the mag. hanging down.
I have more requests for flush fit than the extended magazine
Excited to see how this turns out. Having several 541s and a custom 581, those plastic mags are a bane. A flush mount would definitely be welcome.
Making a 4 round magazine is a piece of cake, but doing so will cause another problem, and that is getting the magazine out of the rifle. Remington 581 and 541s mags don't fall out of the rifle they needs to be pulled out. Plus you will still have the magazine latch protruding out of the bottom of the stock. Wasn't planning on redesigning Remingtons problem with this rifle.
Steel vs Plastic, maybe they'll fall out when you depress the latch? You could put a couple of ears on the bottom kind of like the 511, 513, or 521 magazine.

I'm going to work on that next week but still have the magazine latch sticking out past the stock. Also steel magazines don't fall out because the way the latch spring pushes on the magazine guide.
Can't the mag just be punched out from the mag well with one finger or the thumb while the mag release latch is depressed?

If you got big fingers it would be a problem
I'm also interested in testing if needed. I'll also want to buy some when production goes live.
Tag. I will buy one when you are selling them.
Got the first hundred assembled and finished
I will take 2 when you get ready to sell,
Doug
PM with email sent.
Thanks
Are/ do you have a website ? I also would be interested.
Only flush fit that I'll be making in the future will be single shot adapters.
Got 1 of the 3 reports back on the prototype 581 mags. Thought all 3 would have been back by now, guess it takes awhile to go through a brick of ammo. According to Sean there were no malfunctions, no jams, and when working the bolt slowly there were no stove piping of any rounds.

K22,
Is tha7 a factory stock on your Remington 581?
Doc

No. That is a Bishop stock I had and installed it on the 581, which is now pretty much a custom 541.
I saw where Numerich were selling what looked like the same stock.
Im in for some as well....
Will send PM.
I'll take one. Email sent.
I would like two. How do I order?
I'll take two also. Please PM instructions. Thanks!
Has Greg started selling these? I cannot get my email to go thru.

Won't fit your 580 unless you modified the whole gun, 580 were single shots
Are you planning on making 10 round magazines as well ? The plastic 581 mags also fit my nylon 77 , have you tried yours in a 77 ?
I'm still interested in buying some mags when they become available. pm was sent earlier.
That will be coming up soon, got something else on the cooker right now.
Did this ever happen? I would still love to get a couple.
Greg
Hi guys,
I can't comment on the status of the OPs project, but if you're interested...I have aftermarket magazines available in 5 shot and magazine style single shot adapters. I have aftermarket 10 rounders available but they are not currently in stock.
I'm not sure of the rules here so I won't post a direct link. PM me for a link to the website if you're interested.
Mine are not metal, they are made from laser sintered Nylon 2201.
Thanks! Happy shooting!
Jim
