Fieldcraft 1:9 270 for sure, and likely a Ruger African 9.3x62 also.

Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless in 308 wearing a McMillan stock.

I would like to hear the results of that hunt!

I JUST ordered a box of the new 123 gr ABSOLUTE hammers for my 6.5 BEE. According Hammer it can do 300-400 fps better due to the slickness of the bullet.

123 at 3800 fps?? Heck yeah!

I'll have to try them in the Creed and 260 and their shorter than the 124 Hammer Hunters. Loaded up some 124 to test but my buds rifle needed some love so worked on it then switched to hunting Dove that day.

Lead off rifle will be 7 x 57 in old bubba-ed Mauser...... 150 gr Partitions, mild load

On deck will be back up of 300 Savage in 99 feather weight.......150 gr Hornady

On reserve is 270 Win in pre-64 Model 70...............130 gr Hornady

All 3 shoot well enough for my location in East Central Minn.

Always have at least one spare ready. more fun that way. Sometimes I switch during the season.

My hunting is mostly in brushy places. Shots longer than ~100 yards are rare.
Atlatl
All Winchester M70s...

Elk - Extreme weather in 300WSM, back ups could be Featherweights in 300WSM or 325WSM
Deer (in no particular order) - Featherweight in 7x57, XTR Sporter in .25-06, Ultimate Shadow in 25WSSM

I've always got the AR-15 in 6.8 SPC at hand for pigs
NULA 300 Win Mag for Moose
Encore Muzzleloader 50cal for Ohio Whitetail
Rocking the M7 SS in 308W and for the first time in over a decade I'll shoot factory ammo in it. I bought 2 boxes of Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain IL's and they shoot under 1" 5 shots at 100 yards. I set the scope and put it in the truck.

I will of course have the old faithful BAR Safari 30-06 with 180 grain handloads handy.

If little man shoots this year, he'll use a Ruger SR-556E with TSX handloads. He still has some proving himself on the range to do.

I have become spoiled with my Tikka's trigger and my m700 TriggerTech triggers. Am realizing I have not hunted with my ole m70 friend since 2010, so I may use it this season for nostalgic pleasure.

It is a pushfeed M70 with Benchmark barrel and it is calling me. It seems to be saying try me with .270 Sierra game changer tipped 140 bullets.
58 cal Hawken, patched round ball.
'74 C Sharps 50-90, 750gr flat nosed grease groove.
'94 Winchester, 32-40 WCF, 178gr flat nosed cast bullet.

It'll be a Model 70 with a Benchmark barrel. Either a 6.5-06 AI or a 270 wsm or maybe the .264 Win. I don't worry about overlap amongst my favorite rifles.

Marlin lever gun in .375 winchester and a Ruger #3 .44 mag as they both meet straight wall cartridge rules. Have enough tags they should both get a good workout.

Going to try and get a coyote with the savage 99 in 30/30A.I. just because it sounds fun.
Posted By: Hudge Re: Which rifles this season? - 09/18/20
I drew an archery bull moose tag, so the only gun going to the field with me this year is a Mossberg O/U 28 gauge for grouse and Remington 870 12 gauge for ducks.
Posted By: fishnpbr Re: Which rifles this season? - 09/18/20
For the last 4+ decades it's been predominantly Rem 700 30-06, Browning A Bolt .308, and occasionally a Sako L579 .243 and Marlin .35 Remington. This year it will be a Ruger M77/44.
I try to be fair to all of my rifles, so I use them in a rotation of sorts. I hope I get my Nosler 6 Creed back from Nosler in time to get it into the rotation.

Ruger UL257 Roberts. Savage LWH 223. Traditions 44 Magnum. I won't put my CA Mesa 6.5 PRC into the stand hunting rotation. It'll likely stay a safe queen through the season.

I have several different deer tags this season so I’ll be using:
1) .250-3000 custom Kurz Mauser 98
2) .32-40 Savage 99B
3) 9.3X57 Husqvarna 46
4) 7.62X39 Zastava mini Mauser
5) .257 AI custom Mauser 98
6) .270 Winchester Remington 700BDL
7) .50 caliber Hawken custom patched roundball

Bear (Black) may be thrown in there so maybe a .358 Winchester - 7600 Remington or Ruger 77.

....and who knows what else might get drug out😄

AZ Antelope (already successfully over): Mauser 25-06, the rifle with which I killed my first antelope in 1991. Brought it out for another try this year.
AZ Cow Elk (next week): Savage 99 .358 Win
Montana Mule Deer: Mauser 338-06
Montana Antlerless Whitetail: Either the same 338-06 or the M99 .358 if I don't kill an elk with it next week.

Cheers,

The boy will be bringing home dinner with his 700 youth, 7-08 In a McMillan edge, timney and Zeiss 3x-9x, a gun I'd have killed for at his age (14)
I'll be shooting a Knight original disc .50 w/ a USA burris FF
3x-9x early and a Colt/melvinized light rifle in .30-06 in rifle season.

I am taking my win 94 30-30, with open sights, to Eastern Washington this year for mule deer hunting.

Lots of people think that most of the deer “East of the mountains are killed by long range experts at 500-plus-yards or so”.

Actually, most of the deer are harvested within 200 yards, just like everywhere else.

I won’t be under-gunned in most conditions.
Posted By: CRS Re: Which rifles this season? - 09/19/20

Depending on mood.
Husqvarna 1640 in McMillan edge stock in 6.5x55 with 129gr Hornady SP or Model 70 Classic set up for LR in 270 Win and 145gr ELD-X.
Polly and Percy......
APR Maverick chambered in .358 win. (Sub 1/2 minute rifle)
-Lapua Brass
-CCI 250’s
-Tac Powder
-Barnes 200gr TSX

Kimber Adirondack suppressed in 6.5 CM
-Factory Hornady 143 ELD-x (sub 1/2 minute as well surprisingly)

I may just sell the Adirondack though, as I have an hankering for a 6BR for some F-Class fun 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have only one rifle tag this year, an "Any Deer" tag in Butte County. It's a good tag.
I'll use one of the following, depending on my mood and the weather.
Kimber Montana 7WSM with 145 LRX at 3170
CA Mesa 6.5 PRC with 142 ABLR at 3070
Kimber Classic Select 280 AI, load to be determined.
My .30-30 always gets the starting spot.

2nd in line is a 6.5 PRC.

I'll start out with the Fieldcraft 6.5 Sweed that my late wife gave me a couple of years ago for my 50th birthday. I haven't been able to hunt much since then, so it's not been blooded. I just had the stock shortened by Alex at Master Class and it's supposed to be here Tuesday. That will make it "perfect".

Next will be the Howa Stainless 6.5 Creedmoor in an Alpine stock.

If I kill something with both of these, I'll bring out the late wife's Kimber .243 and try to kill one for her.
Antelope - .257 Roberts, 110g AccuBond @ 3163fps
Elk - 1st rifle: Ruger Hawkeye All-Weather .280 Rem, 150g ABLR @ 2899fps
Elk - 2nd Rifle: Undecided, Likely a Ruger MKII boatpaddle/blue MKII in .300WM w/ 175g LRX @ 3036fps or Ruger MKII boatpaddle/stainless .338WM w; 225g AB @ 2780fps
Since I only have one rifle now it makes the “choice” part moot. Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in 30-06.

How’s Georgetown these days? I kinda of miss the down town square.
At home in Nebraska, 22-250, 257 Roberts, 6.5 CM, 300 Savage,and 35 Remington.

On the road in NH; for over-watch either a CLR in 30-06 or a Marlin XL7 in 25-06, for still-hunting or tracking if there is snow on the ground a Remington 760 in 30-06.

I might even go across the border into ME to hunt around my Uncle Don's camp on Highland Lake in Bridgton, ME.

I gave my friend, Andy, a Savage 170 in 30-30 with the barrel trimmed back to 18" that he seems to like, if I've interpreted his grunts to be positive grunts. I also gave him a Remington 572 to practice with, both of them mounted with old Weaver V4.5s with PCH reticles. If he practices with the 572, he should be ready to punch his NH and VT deer tags with the 170. He finally ran out of ammo for the Winchester 70 in 25 WSSM that I loaned to him for one season a decade or so ago, so he gave it back to me with a little more character than I remember it having, but friends are forever while stuff comes and goes.

Winchester M54 .30-30, Lyman 48 WJS
Remington 700 Ti 270 Win, Leupold M8 4X

Deer with tikka 3x SL 6.5. Hoping to pop it’s cherry.

Elk tikka 06 168 ttsx
Daughter is coming for elk, so she can choose 6.5 CM with 127 LRX or 270 with 130 ttsx. So one of those will be the back up Rifle
Posted By: MHWASH Re: Which rifles this season? - 09/19/20
Tikka 6.5 Creed for antelope, deer and elk. Even bear if I run into one. Sold the Tikka 300, and the Rem 78 is needing a new barrel. Can’t decide on whether to stick with 270, or go 280AI.
Howa .308 win. Used to be a lightweight with a pencil barrel, also had a Leupold 2.8-8X36 VX-3i. It was too muzzle light and it finally irritated me too much, so I put a McGowen Precision 20" Remington Sporter contour barrel on it, changed the scope to a Nightforce 3-10X42, replaced the HACT trigger with a Timney, and Pillar bedded it.

Initial impressions are that it shoots a little better, how much I don't know, but I'll keep playing with loads to see if it has a preference and what it is. With a couple loads I've tested, it's a fairly dangerous deer rifle for the deer in my area.

It sits in the hands very well now.

I have never chronographed this load. Several years ago, Barnes put me in contact with a man that wrote for European sporting magazines and had done a lot of work with the 416 Ruger and their bullets. He was getting 2500 FPS with the 350 TSX from the 23” African. I am 1.5 grains below his load.
I had excellent accuracy in this rifle and another 20” and stopped there.
I actually hope to run it over the chronograph within the next several days. I have been putting it off for years. The main reason now, is I want to load the TTSX also.
This rifle and a near identical 20” 375 Ruger with 270 TSX are two favorites.

I really like the rifle and cartridge.
I also have a M70 Classic stainless re-barrel to 416 Rem. I like this rifle also. Though have only shot it a few times.
For my distances, the 416’s fit right in. And I have had very good accuracy with the 350 grain bullets. Which I consider near ideal for anything in North America.
The 416 Ruger and Remington versions, I can still shoot in the sometimes out of position game shooting positions as a “normal” recoil rifle. My 458 Lott, I have a bit more respect/concern over contorted shooting positions.
I hope you are able to get hands of 416, I believe you would have a lot of fun with it.

WIll decide between the following three in rotation this year:

1) Winchester 70 XTR Featherweight Winlite 270 topped with Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32
2) Ruger Hawkeye stainless in walnut stock 7mm-08 topped with Cabelas Instinct 3-9x40
3) 1953 Marlin 336RC 30-30 topped with Leupold M8 3X

I am sure all three will get work this season.

The two I’m most excited for are:

A New Haven built Win M70 Classic FW 7-08 w/ FX3 6x42mm plex in DDs that I traded into here

A LR 98 6.5x55 I’ve been building for about a decade; gorgeous JRS in high-grade French walnut that Karnis refined for me with ebony end cap, steel grip cap, red decelerator, a diet, and grip scallops, hand-checkered wrap around pattern, aftermarket trigger, Wisner 2-position safety, S&Ks, and light-taper Apex Rifle Co barrel

Taking them to the range Saturday morning to sight em in gonna be fun!!

Old beater 760ADL in .35 rem.
Ran it last 2 seasons.
Took the M8 4x compact off and slapped a VX1 2-7X. Little longer tube, at 4X ended up w less neck stretch.
Proly just leave it at 3X (so front sight fuzzed out) and even more eye relief.

Steyr Pro Hunter .30-06. Aint blooded it yet.
Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x.

MZ would be my old TC Hawken Silver Elite .50 cal

Bow is Blackwidow HS 54#. Minor surgery has me no go for a few weeks so might end up running a Hoyt compound of some sort.

Savage 99H 250-3000. Going to try a receiver sight (Lyman 56s). Have been working with it the last few weeks. Confident in a shot within 100 yards.

Got a couple options should I need something for longer likely ranges. Should be a great season.
Depends on the weather. Nasty days I'll use my stainless/synthetic rifles. Browning X-Bolt 30-06, Tikka T3x 308, Tikka T3x 338 Federal or Tikka T3 243.
For the thick stuff I might take my Remington 7600 30-06 Carbine or even my Browning BLR 308.
For the days I just want to wander I might take one of my lever guns. Marlin 336 30-30, Winchester 94 NRA Centennial 30-30, Marlin 1894 44 Mag. These all have either Skinner or Williams peep sights.
I really want to get a buck with the Winchester 94 as it was left to me by my Uncle Hank. This will be the first year ever that I don't hunt with him, although I know he'll be there in spirit.

I will be on a rotation this year:
Ruger 77/44
Mossburg 100 ATR in 270 win. (first deer rifle and still try to take it a few times each year)
Remington 700 in 30-06
Bergara Ridge in 6.5 creedmoor
Bergara Ridge in 300 Win Mag

Sidearms:
Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag stainless with 10.5" barrel
Glock G40 (havent shot a deer with this one yet, but excited to see how the 10mm does compared to the 44 mag)

I'm down to 4 do-all rifles. All SS/Syn. Likely combo be Kimber 30-06 for elks and bears, and a Kimber 308 for deers. I'm kinda liking that pairing for about anything I hunt. I am trying different bullets this year - 165 gr Federal Trophy in the 308 and either 180 Fed Trophy or 200 Accubonds in the 06. I'd bet they will all work. whistle

I think I'll start with a Winchester Model 88 in 308. Retro again this year.

I'm undecided, because of where I may hunt. The most likely prospect this year is a CZ550 in 7x57 with a 160 gr. Sierra SBT and IMR4350.
Tomorrow, 10/03/20, I'm going to take a stainless Howa 1500 in 6.5 CM that is bedded in a B&C Medalist stock and mounted with a 2.5-10x40 Nikon of some sort.
Posted By: Fuelman Re: Which rifles this season? - 10/04/20
For PA bear I'll tote the 673 in .350 RM loaded with 250 gr. Woodleighs. For deer season M700 Mountain Rifle in 7X57 and 140 NBTs.

November I will use 35 Whelen Rem 700 where I can see 200 yds. Or 300 Wby Vanguard where I can see a long way. Deer or Bear.

Seriously, I have ammo loaded for the 8 RM. Just gotta check zero. Haven't hunted it in several years.

I love my T3X SS Lite 7 RM and BOTH will see action this season.

Well I checked zero this afternoon. Both are good to go !

BTW I discovered I DON'T have a pic of the 700, 8mm RM but I plan to cure that this season.

Rain forecast 2nd day of season.
Opener is the Remington '63 760 in .35 rem.

Rain day is the M77MKII "all weather" in .308

if bucked out will take the '67 Ruger #1 in .280 for the late antlerless (paid too much for a gloss scope but had to have it match).
Nice weather only, of course.

Got a mule deer at 547 yards, one shot with the 25-06. Seems the Leupold CDS actually does work. Headed on another deer hunt right after Thanksgiving, probably gonna take the 6mm Rem on that one. Christmas with dad will most likely see the 260 hit the field this year.

I don’t get wrapped up in all that nonsense haha.
I’ve used everything from small to large and it all works .

I enjoy using the 9.3 and 375 on deer though , clean hole in and out , dead in the middle , tracking is typically nonexistent.

Still gotta deal with the deer camp know it all’s ha

The Left Hand MRC 243 will be #2 in the line up. #1 will be the boring old LH 270 KS. Looking forward to tagging a couple fat does. Want to try canning some meat this year in addition to putting some in the freezer.

Tell me about the stock....not familiar, thanks. Btw, what bullets you running out of curiosity.

025 - rock that 9.3 - classic round, less meat damage I bet than a 270

RLA, that 350 will do just fine, I ran a Marlin 357 with 158s at 2050 over Lil Gun......LIGHT recoil, about 1.5 MOA - easy to hit where you aim, and blew the heck out of 2 liters and milk jugs at 150.

Kimber Montana in 257 Roberts.
Custom model 70 in 338 federal. McMillan stock and Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 fixed power scope. Rifle was a 308 rebore done by Jesse.
Shot a nice Missouri Whitetail with it yesterday evening at about 90 yards. Slightly quartering away and angled the bullet through the lungs and into the off shoulder. He stumbled about 10 or 12 yards and was dead. A factory Federal Fusion load of all things!
I recovered the bullet bulging the skin high on the off side shoulder.

Winchester M70 FWT 270 Win...whitetail and elk if the opportunity presents itself.

I really don’t hunt anymore since I got 2 puppies about 6 years ago, They ruined me. If I do go out it’s just to spend time with my brother and we’ve both passed on deer since we look for a bigger buck. If I do go this year it will be a .260 Remington Ti. Probably have to work anyway.
