Reading the Jack O' thread got me to thinking about how we, as hunters and riflemen, are influenced by our heroes and family members. Of course, my rifle cabinet looks nothing like that of my grandfather but I still hunt with his old rifles from time to time.

Anyway, what were your grandfather's favorite rifles and cartridges? If not grandfather, insert the preferences of the person who got you started in hunting/shooting.

99 22Highpower takedown and a pre-War '06.

His Garand musings from The Big One,led to my purchasing a Winny specimen,to dupe his....................
257 Roberts P64 Winny.
Not sure about grandfather, but my Dad used and still uses a model 100 - 308.
My grandfather used a Remmy pump in 270........
Winchester 94 30-30 built in 1917 (I still have it) and later on a Winchester mod 100 .308...still have that too..
1898 30-40 krag
Model 12. Bought a tang safety Ruger 77 in 30-06 later in life.

Other grandfather loved the A5's and a Win Model 100 in 308.
Neither grandfather hunted, but my Dad's favorites were a Shultz and Larson (spl?) 7X61 Sharp & Hart, and then a 700 BDL .25-06. Both of which turned up missing after his death.
One grandfather shot a BSA .270 and a Remmy 722 in .222. Also a Browning Semi-Auto 12 Gauge (can't remember the model), a Lakefield Mark II .22, and a Colt Official Police.

Other one shot a pre-64 M70 in .300 H&H and a pre-64 M70 in .220 Swift (that I now have).
Grandma shot a pre-64 M70 in .243 Win and a Browning .22 Pump.

Forgot to add, that I've got the Model 12 and Mod 100. I very much dread the day that I inherit the A5s.
maternal grandfather much favored a browning a-5 sweet 15 for quail and doves. he toted a remmy 742/7400 for deer.
paternal grandfather i don't think did much hunting. now HIS father hunted men in the old indian territory. don't know how he was armed. one of my granddad's no good brothers pawned the weapons.
My grandfather 'killed' food for the table with a Winchester Model 11 pump 22 long. He did not hunt per se, he fed the family. Hunting was a luxury he could not have afforded. He also used an old Iver Johnson .410 breakaction shotgun, same deal, it was food getter.

My father hunted with a Winchester Model 64 in .32 WinSpl. Killed elk and deer with it for many years.
My grandfather's one and only rifle is a Winchester model 67 single shot .22 with open sights. He never hunted any big game, but used that rifle for small game, all manner of pests on the farm including coyotes, and to kill hogs with.
There was very little big game hunting in LA until the 1960's, or so I am told. Most of the northern part of the state was row crops. My grandfather was a bird hunter--Model 12 Winchester. He bought his three teenage sons their deer rifles in the mid 1960's: a 336 Marlin 30-30, a .308 Winchester 100, and a 762 Remington .270 (my dad). My other grandfather, who was not a hunter, was present when Fish & Game brought a trailer of deer from Wisconsin to be released a few years before. Growing up, I hunted with dad and his two main rifles were a Ruger 77 in 7mm Rem and a 600 Mohawk in .308.
My grandfather hunted with a 1927 Winchester 94/95 Hybrid in .30-30. It was the first centerfire rifle I ever fired and I continue to hunt with it todayRarely am I happier than when Im wandering the woods with that rifle.

His shotgun was a 30 Remington 1889 12 bore with fluid steel tubes. I have that one, but since it doesnt fit me very well at all, I dont shoot it very often.

His .22 was a Winchester 1890 in .22 Short, which was also my first .22And, if you dont see the patternI have that one also.
Granddaddy used a Savage 99 300 Savage, Remington 141 35 Rem. and a Model 12. Later, he used a Remington 760 30/06 and he shot his last deer at the age of 90 (I was with him) with a Winchester 94 30/30. Wow, I miss that man so much.

One of my Grandpas hunted deer in arizona with a Remington 788 .243 with a cheap 4x scope, he used a Marlin 36" barrel goose gun for most everything else. My other Grandpa mostly uses a Remington Stainless BDL .243 with a weaver 6x for coyotes and used a Ruger compact .243 for his deer.

270jrk
My grandpa used a BSA with a M1917 action in a 30-06. It now sits in my gun safe.
Grandfather used a Remington Model 14 in 30 Remington until late in life as his Elk and Mule Deer gun. Then moved the a Sako .243 when he had to start hunting from the truck, due to polio taking his knees. My dad used a Sporterized Enfield in 30-06 and now uses a Ruger Mark II 7MM Mag. My Great Grandfather used a Henry Rifle in 44 Rimfire and a side by side 12 gauge. Ryan
Great grandpa hunted with a 1886 chambered in 38-70 and grandpa with an 1895 in 35WCF and later a pre war 70 in 06.

Single Shot Bolt action 22 LR, winchester. Food getter and Hog killer. Long since sold off now, once they moved into town.

My Dad's rifles were a Model 64 Win. in .30-30 and a .22 LR Rem. Mod. 241. My brother and I still have them.
My Grandfather used a Model 81 Remington semi-automatic in .300 savage with a 2.5X Lyman Alaskan scope. He also had two 721 Remingtons, one in .270, and the other a 30'06. Both had B&L adjustable mounts for a B&L Balvar 4, 2.5-4X scope. The '06 had a muzzle break, so I started deer hunting with it at age 12, some 50 yrs. ago. He also had a Remington Mod. 30S which he had rebarreled from .257 Roberts to a the then wildcat .22-250. It had a Weaver 330 scope with an addition which increased the magnification to 8X. He also had a Winchester M-70 in .22 Hornet. which also took the Balvar 4. We, he, my brother and I shot the barrels out of both.
Later, Gramps bought one of the first Remington 740 semi autos in .30'06. I killed my first buck with it in 1960. It wore the then new Balvar 2.5-8X variable.
His binoculars were the great B&L Zephurs in 9X35. I still have those which I used until 2001 when I bought a Leica 8X42 BA. E
Grandpa used a Wincheter 100 .308 with a fixed 4x. That seems like a rather popular choice so far on this thread. Interesting. Before that, he hunted with a number of different shotguns. That was his one and only rifle. He bought it new when they first came out on the market and used it right up until he passed away. He took alot of bucks with it.

My dad has it now and carries it a couple hunts each year, switching off with a Win70 .243. The 100 has never given a lick of trouble.

Best -
Andy
For birds he used a model 12, and he also had a Stevens sxs...Got that too.....

My Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, Great............Grandpa used a pointed stick. It was passed down several generations but was lost in a fire.

One grandfather used a 20 gauge Ranger SxS for everything including slugs/deer. The other had a 94 .32 special for deer and ???? for birds. My father used a .35 Rem 336SC 1952 model that now sits in my safe. My brother has my grandfather;s 20 gauge.

I also have a pretty nice replica of great, great, gre............

Granddad was a big aficionado of Mr O'Connor

Pre-64 M70 in .270 for a bunch of stuff including Elk, Moose and Sheep and a Steyr Mannlicher .222 Magnum (no typo) for Texas Whitetails and varmints.

Birds it was a Ted Williams 12 gauge over and under (think Win 101) and Win 101 in 20 gauge. I ended up with the Win 101 and others in the family have the rest and we use'em as he wanted
One grandfather used a Lefever Nitro Special 12 gauge SxS. I have that one.

The other grandfather used a late '40s vintage Savage 99 EG, in .300 Savage; with factory irons. My uncle has that, and I have a twin.

Dad uses/used a Winchester 94 .30-30.

The uncles use a wide selection, but tend HARD toward Marlin 336s in .30-30 about 90% of the time...
I had a grandfather that was a gun guy. I was pretty young when he died, but to my knowledge, all of his guns are still in the family. My dad has one of his Winchester 54's in .30-06, and an uncle has another one of his Models 54's in .22 Hornet. My grandfather also had a .257 Roberts, but I never knew what model rifle it was. One of my first .22's was his old Winchester Model 61 pump.

My grandfather also had a bunch of military weapons he'd brought back from WWII. My dad has an old .455 Webley revolver, that was converted to shoot .45 ACP ammo with moon clips. It's a neat old gun.

My wife's only living grandfather has a few old Winchester rifles. Old 45-90's, and such, that were given to him by his grandfather. I hope her family takes precautions to keep them in the family, when the inevitable does happen. She's got an uncle or two that would sell them in a heartbeat if it would buy them a few drinks at the local watering hole. I would hate to see that happen.
Pa Pa used this guy, a Winchester made 1917 Enfield that he got sometime after coming back from Europe via Purple Heart treatment. I don't know exact dates, but it was purchased at a Hardware Store in Harrisville, WV in the late 40s or early 50s. Had a gunsmith outside of Charleston sportarize it and here it is. He also used a Win. 94 and later a Marlin 336 both in 30 WCF.

Not the best pic but was handy at the moment. This is (was) Dad's and not Grand Dad's. This guy was bought the same year that the stork brought me (1977) and is in 30-06. A Leupold Vari X-III 2.5-8X36 sits on top and has a recently installed post and duplex reticle. Don't know how many deer have gotten a paper tag for a tombstone over the years. I try and arrange that at least once annualy with this rig.

As a young man, Grandpa hunted quail with a 16 ga SxS. When I knew him, he had a .410 for general farm work, later swapped for a .22 LR Savage 19.

Deer hunting was pretty well unknown in the time and place my grandfather lived, but it was a quail hunter's paradise. He didn't figure he had missed a thing. We have lots of deer now, but I'd trade it to get the quail back.
Paternal Great-grandfather - Sav 1899 in 30-30 with Weaver 4x
Maternal Grandfather - Pre 64 Win m94 in 30-30 (have it in 95% condition)
Father - Great grandfather sav and now a SUCKS in 06.
My paternal grandfather passed about 12 years before my birth. According to Dad he wasn't much of a hunter. Maternal grandfather had a 410 bolt gun by the door to shoot red squirrels off the bird feeder. Not much of a hunter either. (Used bait ya know ...). Dad has been my loonie influence.

I grew up in North Dakota. Dad's guns were tools of the northern plains. Lots of bird hunting. Big game wasn't ever bigger than a mule deer and usually wayyyy out there.

The guns I will always associate with Dad are square back 20 gauge autos with mod chokes. First a Belgian A5, then a Franchi AL 48, then LOTS of Franchi's (never met one he didn't like). Those were his upland guns ... for "serious" waterfowling he'd break out the Superposed stack barrels. Back in the day he'd take a brace to the duck pass ... one with Lubaloy 2's ... the other with 5's. I saw too many "quads" over the decoys to think he was just lucky.

For big game hunting I've never seen him hunt anything other than deer and the very occasional pronghorn. Coyotes and fox were roadside targets of opportunity. Ever since I was old enough to notice (late 70's?) his rifle of choice was a 25-06. I vividly remember his old springfield with the 70's high cheek wild laminate stock. Always had a straight 6x on it and 100 gr handloads of varying componentry and astronomical ballistic claims. One thing was certain, he could flat out shoot that rifle! Sometime in the early 80's I recall hearing the declaration that the springfield was "too heavy" and he bought a brand new M70 Featherweight Bob for the express purpose of reaming to a "two bit aught". Eventually the Springfield got listed in Shotgun News as a "Beanfield Rifle" and sold to a gentleman from that way. Probably is still dropping deer at 500. The Featherweight never shot quite like the Springfield. Maybe it was an eroding skill set. Probably had something to do with a lack of bedding. In any event the mislabled featherweight is still in his cabinet. I'm thinking that a bedding job and modern loading may improve on the current label of "Inch and a half gun". It's a project on the back burner of theories.

A few years ago Dad "discovered" the 280 Rem ... "Ballistics of a 25-06 with 20% bigger bullet". Shoots it out of a BAR from his elevated stand as the friends and family beat the river to push the deer past.

I guess availability of family components (and cartridge prejudice) has greatly influenced my battery. Lo and behold ... there is a SUCKS Mountain Rifle in 280 Rem and a B-78 25-06 in my safe. The 6.5x55 Featherweight has a striking resemblence to the "Better Bob" (hmm even down to the 6x scope ... ah but mine is a 6x42!!!) and the 7x57 Shillelagh is a mannlicher, well just like the M77 RSI .243 that I shot my first deer with in 1983.

Damn. I am my dad's son.

There. One blessing I will count for today ...
I just got to see my grandfather's guns for the first time last night. I cannot even tell you what most of them were. I can tell you that one was a lever action 30-30, but a couple others were a Hex barreled single shots made by a company that is probably no longer in business. Also has a 1917 .30-06 that he used during World War II also.

I'll see if I can get pics and get more information.
My grandfather used an 1895 winchester 30 govt' 06 built in 1922. I have a picture of him with the rifle and a nice mule deer in wyoming from 1928, hanging above my desk. I also have the rifle.
A 99 savage in 300. I have it now. Funny how the old stuff killed game dead every time.
Winchester 1895 in 30-06 and a M-12 16 ga.
I have them both and use the 06 on occassion.
My grandfather used a Remington Model 30 (I believe) in .30-06, a Remington Model 11 12 gauge for bobwhites and water fowl, but had switched to an Ithaca Model 37 in 16 guage by the time that I started hunting with him.

After he suffered a stroke when he was in his early 60s, he bought a Winchester Model 50 that (along with his rifle) got away from the family when he died. I was later able to retrieve (buy) the Model 50 from a pawn shop in Beaumont (TX) where he lived. The other guns never turned up--I think that my dad's step-sister sold them all to acquaintances...
My grandfather used a war surplus 303 brit for many years. In the later years he packed an iron sighted Rem semi auto chambered in 30-06.
A Winchester Model 54 in 270WIN. One of the early ones. It's still in the family...

Paternal grandfather passed when my dad was a wee lad. Don't even know if he hunted. He did have his 1911 45 which my dad got, and I've shot several times. My dad mentioned using it to take small game.

Maternal grandfather was a bird hunter and had various 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. I did handle them when visiting him when I was a wee lad, but I have no idea what type they were.

Did get a chance to shoot trap with my uncle and cousins when we visited back East. They set up on his back 40 and they were suprised how well I did having never fired a shotgun before. Then I started thinking about what I was doing and started missing

Didn't grow up in a hunting family. I did read Elmer Keith growing up, so that definately seemed to have influence me.
MY grandfather (the one on my Dad's side died when my father was 3) on my Mom's side. Didn't hunt.

Now my Dad is my Grandad (he upped his rank with the two additions to my family a few years ago)

His rifle he likes is a Ruger 77 Tang safety in 300 Win mag with a Redfield Accurange scope on it.
My father's father used a 30-40 Krag. Wish I knew where that was now. Had a couple of DB shotguns as well. He was done hunting by the time I was aware he hunted. Dad didn't hunt. I've got a few pictures and happy to have them.
My Grandfather (who died when I was 6 months old) used a Marlin 36 .30-30, a Winchester 97 16 gauge, and a Winchester 62A .22. He probably killed more game with those guns than I do with all my guns.
I have all his guns, and would like to shoot a deer with the .30-30 one day. I shot my first squirrel with the 97, and my first rabbit with the 62A.
I have a more affluent life style than my Grandfather who was a poor East Texas dirt farmer before I was born and a dairy farmer after I got to know him. He had but two guns. A side by side 12 gauge and a single shot, bolt action .22 rimfire. He used the 12 gauge to protect the chickens and stock from night time varmints and "chicken hawks". He loaded the .22 with shorts to hunt squirrels, kill the hogs to butcher, and shoot the head off a yard bird for Sunday dinner. (He was too slow by then to chase em' down and ring their necks)

Those two guns always stood behind the kitchen door and they were always loaded. My earliest memories of shooting was when Pappaw let me shoot a Prince Albert can with his 22.

My Father and uncles hunted deer with surplus military rifles. 303's and Springfields in 30-06. One uncle owned a Winchester 30-30. It was the most expensive rifle of the lot!

In my family shooting was less about sport and more about putting some meat on the table.

I guess my Grandfather would be disapointed in me for "wasting" so much ammunition shooting at targets and "critters that ain't no good to eat."
I grew up in a religiously anti-gun family, so......

Took the plunge myself and bought a rem 700ADL in .270. talk about pissing off the family <grins>
My grandfather used a .30-30, a Savage 99 in 250 Savage, and a .243 Winchester. He had others also, but I don't know what.
Sevens 235 SxS 12ga, and a Remington model 41 .22 rifle...which he was deadly with.
My paternal grandfather was an avid hunter, though he was strictly a meat hunter. He was born with a broken collar bone which was never fixed, and hence he never liked recoil. His first deer rifle was a 30/06, which he swore till the day he died was the hardest kicking rifle he ever shot (it probably was), and sold it in no time flat.

After he started falling redwoods, a co-worker brought a Remington 141 in 35 Remington to work one day. He thought it was a really slick looking rifle, so he went out and bought one. He hunted with it for several years, and killed a lot of deer with it. He always claimed it was a hard kicking rifle too, though I think the 35 is one of the mildest recoiling rifles there is.

In 1950 he bought the first Remington 722 in 222 Remington to come to this area. I have a picture of him with a buck he killed with it dated 1951. My father, in diapers, is in the picture as well. He hunted with the rifle until the early 70s. My father also killed a lot of deer with that rifle, including his first buck.

My dad bought him a German made Weatherby Varmintmaster 224 Magnum in the early 70s (for $198, brand new.), and he hunted with that until he stopped hunting in the late 80s after he had a stroke. He killed his last two bucks with it- a three pointer and a fork horn. He shot the three pointer, and the fork horn just looked down at the dead buck, so he shot him too. They both died piled on top of each other.

He also had an extremely early production Winchester Model 63 22 LR. He bought this when he was working on the A-Bomb plant. They wouldnt let anyone bring a gun on site. There were tons of rabbits around the barracks, and he loved rabbit. He would set up snares, but every time hed catch a rabbit, someone would get there before him and steal his rabbit. So he saved up a little money, and bought the 63 at a local pawn shop IIRC. Hed take it apart and hide it under the seat of his pickup.

Im lucky to have his 35 Remington, 222, 224 and Model 63, along with a Trapdoor Springfield that was used in the Spanish American war that he bought from his brother for $3 and a jug of moonshine

My maternal grandfather died 17 years before I was born. From the one or two stories Ive heard, he enjoyed hunting Germans with an M1 Garand, and got a pistol round to the knee for his efforts at the Battle of the Bulge.

WB.
My Dad's Dad had a 12 ga. Winchester lever action shotgun. Mom's Dad had a 30-40 Krag.
Oldest brother ended up with both guns. Must be my fault for being born last....

1926 Savage 99 takedown in 300 Sav and Rem 141 35 Rem(also a takedown).........still have 'em both, even though he died when my dad was only 12............ better woods rifles still haven't been invented.............Oh yeah, and a Win 1897 12 gauge, shot my first pheasant with it when it was still longer than me............
My grandfather used a PRE 64 winchester in .308. I now own that rifle and have killed several deer with it.
My Grandpa used a Model12 16 ga for pheasants. I have to ask my Dad what gramps used on ducks. Those were his 2 favorite animals to hunt. Gramps didn't much care for deer hunting although he did from time to time.

Mac
My paternal grandfather isn't much of a hunter. He uses mostly an old Iver Johnson 16 gauge for squirrels and such. Pappy and I bought him a Ruger .22 Hornet with a 4x12 Swift scope for groundhogs and crows, etc.

My maternal grandfather (deceased 1993) was a real gun nut and avid hunter.

His favorite deer rifle was a Parker-Hale 1200 .30/06 with a K-4 steel tube Weaver. He also had a couple of of 742 Remingtons (.30/06) that he used quite a bit as well as a Marlin 336 .30/30.

He also used a .243 and .240 Gibbs a bit.

As he got older and became less recoil tolerant he began using a .17 Remington with a 10X Weaver for just about everything including several dozen deer.

He was also a bird hunter and favored a Model 11 Remington 12 gauge fitted with a Herter's poly-choke.

After his death, all his guns, except one Remington bolt action .22 I claimed and took home , were schlepped away by my cousin and his ignorant B&&$$#tch of a mother. These two POS sold all of them at a pawn shop and we've never been able to recover them.

Thought religion was all about owning guns???
Kimber, I think sarah brady was there preacher.

I do know about 12 years ago when my mom ran into her first brown bear on the trail up here on a visit, she was praying pretty heavily so I guess religion does come into play. All is good now, both have there own guns, pops has his paperwork going to get his FFL and he also shot his first blackie this past spring. I guess they do listen to there kid once in a while.
Old Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 and a Model 12 Winchester. Both bought on the same day at the same hardware store. Both of which are in my safe, man the stories I am sure they could tell if they could talk.
My grandfather was never much of a hunter, but he did use an old 03 when he competed in the Camp Parry matches for the Army. 1000 yard matches I beleave. MS8mm
Heres a picture of my grampas only deer rifle, a savage352 in 30-30. I havent shot this rifle in a long time, I did buy dies for it a few years ago but that as far as I got.

Maternal grandfather was a bird hunter only. Parker 10 ga hammer gun.

Paternal grandfather was a pistol shooter mainly but did have a M92 in 32-20.

My grandfather used a Winchester Model 94 in .32 Winchester Special.

The rifle now sits in my gun cabinet.
My grandfather used a Remington Rolling Block No. 4 in .22 LR, which is now my son's. His big rifle was a Rolling Block in .45-70.

My father used a Remington 700 ADL in .30-06, of course, like all WW2 vets.
I am the first big-game hunter in our family so I am doing my best to have quality rigs to pass on. Nice post, I wish I'd had a family hunting mentor, guess thats why all 3 of my kids are growing up with guns/hunting.
savage 99 in 250-3000 then moved up to the Remmy 742 06
Winchester 16 ga. I think it was a model 23.
My late grandfather's (on my father's side) one and only deer rifle was a model 1891 7.65x53mm Mauser. I own it today and it's an absolute pleasure to take it out and shoot with it knowing that he once held it in his hands. I don't hunt with it much since it's not scoped, but I have taken deer with it.

On a similar note, my other grandfather did not hunt, but instead enjoyed woodworking and such. I have several of his tools and get a lot of satisfaction out of using them, especially the old Stanley hand plane.
Posted By: WJU Re: What did your grandfather use? - 01/23/07
My grandfather did it all with 2 rifles. A Kraig rifle in 30-40 Kraig & a Savage 99F in 300 Savage. Neither rifle was scoped. He used them until he passed away a few years back.

Short Magazine Lee Enfield, .303 British. Mounted on a tripod. was not used for recreation. I have a picture but will have to scan it to put it here sometime.
Remington Model 8 in 30 Remington.......I inherited it a few years ago and killed a deer with it the first time I took it to the woods.

I sure miss that old man!
GonHuntin

The Remington 141 in 35 Rem. was probably my grandfather's favorite deer rifle. He sure did shoot a lot of huge bucks with his. He traded that rifle about twenty years before he died so, obviously, I did not inherit it.

However, another relative of mine (a 3rd or 4th cousin) had a Remington 141 in 30 Rem. To make a long story short, I purchased that rifle in the summer of 2000 and shot a very nice 9-pointer here in Georgia in 2002. It's not my Granddaddy's 35 but it's close. Those are such good carrying and pointing rifles. And how many people still own rifles chambered in 30 Rem?

I had three grandfathers; all of whom hunted.
My maternal grandfather hunted with a Model 94 in 30/30. It was sent back to the factory for reconditioning after about 30 years and came back looking new.
My mother's step-father was my second grandfather. He hunted with a Remington 30s in 30/06, a 270 gibbs on a FN action, and a 303 Lee Enfield.
My paternal grandfather's main rifle was a Winchester M70 in 300H&H. Another he used occasionally was a '03 Springfield. He backed these up with a colt in 38 Super. GD
a Pre64 94 in 30.30 or a 99 savage in 300 savage. Both in my gun safe. I don't actully know which he prefered as he nearing the end of his hunting days when I was just starting. My dad uses a Ithca deerslayer and remington pump in 30.06
Model 94 Winchester 30-30
Well my grandfather's rifle was a Winchester Model 1890 in 22 long. He lived in west central Kansas and didn't do any big game hunting, but some rabbits got taken if they showed up in the front of the house. Mostly it was used to dispatch cows and pigs for butchering, and rats and skunks that showed their tails in the daylight. I always talked him into talking it with us when we went fishing for target shooting, and he gave it to me later on in his life.

It was the first rifle I ever shot, and I take it out to the range on his birthday and shoot it in his memory.

Great thread. I didn't get my Grandfather's favorite 300 Savage, but I did end up with his Sako .222 and Rem. 28 gauge. Retiring the Saklo this year.
My Dad's 760 .257 still goes hunting with me occassionally. I have never missed with it!

Winchester model 12 12ga.

Winchester P64 30-06
Winchester P64 .270
My maternal Grandfather who started taking me hunting when I was 4 years old hunted with a 1917 enfield the was rebarreled by Johnson Automatics in .270 and that he stocked himself in a Bishop stock. He used a wood burner to burn various brands and initials into the stock as checkering... way cool! It has a homemade fold down peep site he made and a removeable side mount with an ancient Weaver 4x scope. I now own the rifle and used it to harvest 3 whitetails and a feral hog last season. Boy I sure miss him. My cousin got his Fox Sterlingworth 20 ga. side by side and sold it in a garage sale for $200.00. I could kill him!

My paternal grand father had a Vulcan 16 ga. double barrel hammer gun and an Iver Johnson 12 ga. single barrel. I managed to bulge the barrel on the Iver Johnson due to some shody shotshell reloads my old roommate put together. The Vulcan is a safe queen in my safe thank goodness.
Both of my grandfathers passed before I was born. My Dad hunted big game with his 1936 vintage Winchester Model 71 in 348 WCF for over thirty years. At that time he had finally saved enough money to have his 1917 Enfield (Remington) sporterized. He switched to the 30-06 and I got to trade up to the Model 71 from a Winchester 94 I had been hunting with. I was 14 years old when I killed my first big game animal with that rifle (a cow elk). Its still my favorite 33 years later.
My grandfather used a Savage pump .22 ofr stuff he cought eating his garden, a .577 Snider for big stuff, and a 16 gauge Lafecheaux SXS when hunting birds.
In later years he ad a Savage .410 SXS also.

My grandfather had 2 rifles. One was a 303 Enfield(old bugger) and a Cooey repeater .22 which my dad now uses also. He would use the .22 for shooting cattle and hogs in the head prior to slaughter and the 303 for shooting swamp donkeys(moose). He occasionally shot a goose or duck with the .22 and many bears also with the 303. He fed his large family with these 2 rifles. Who said guns aren't part of our culture up here in Canada?
Paternal: Browning A5 Light 12 (rebuilt twice for him by Browning - he liked to shoot doves in Arizona) My brother's gun now.

Maternal: prefered .222 and a handlight
-dad said he could gut a deer in the pitch dark in about two minutes (never caught )
M-1 Garand. I don't think he ever hunted anything but the Japanese during WWII. My bother asked him one time if he ever killed anyone. He replied with a smirk on his face, "Not sure if I killed anyone, but I shot a few right between the eyes!" He told me he lost his brother at Guadalcanal three weeks before he got there. Truely the greatest generation!

Model 99 savage in 300 sav., Winch. 94 in 30-30 and an Ithaca pump 20 guage shotgun. All three reside in the safe and still get time in the woods and at the range every year.

NH Hunter.
My Maternal granfather used Savage 99's in.303 and a .30/40 Krag.
My kids' granspaws used a Winchester 100 in .308, a Remington 700 .22/250, Stevens 325 .30/30, Mosin 91 7.62.

Great topic!!

For deer Grandpa used a Rem 141 in 35 Rem. He always stressed that his was a rifle and not a carbine. He also had a Stevens SxS for small game. The 141 is owned by my oldest brother, the Stevens by my other brother. My father used a very early Marlin 336 30-30, later he used a Rem 760 30-06. For small game a Browning/Stevens pump. My fathers guns are in my safe and the most prized guns in my collection.
Neither grandfather hunted or owned guns.
My father, until he was in his fifties, only used a shotgun. He had a model 37 12 gauge Ithica. It was a most unusual gun. It had a 32 inch barrel with a solid raised rib. I am 70 now and have never seen another one like it. The gun is in my brothers hands now.
When he started to deer hunt he first got a 760 Remington pump in .270 Win. Later he replaced this with a Browning BAR in .270. These both went down the road.
I only remember one grandpa hunting and he used a Winchester single shot .22 and a Damascus barreled 12 gauge double. One of his friends died and left him a Winchester '97 which he hardly ever used and I ended up with that one.

I think the .22 got stolen from my brother's house and a sticky fingered uncle got the 12. There was also an old Remington .22 pump in the mix that he never used and my ex-wife got that one.
In Alabama, in my grandfather's days, there was no "deer hunting". Deer were present in some places, but not like now. So small game such as rabbit, squirrels, and quail were the mainstay of hunting, and maybe turkey and ducks too. A properly loaded 12ga would do it all, and a day afield usually included a mixed bag. The Model 12 Winchester was very popular. I have a hand-me-down Winchester Model 12 Pump 12ga, and a Win. Model 50 Semi-auto 20ga, one from each grandfather.
Mine hunted with several over the years but the two most prevalent were a Jerry Fisher, .25 wildcat of my grandpa's design, on a pre-64 and a Biesen on a pre-64, 7mm wildcat, similar to a 7mm rem mag but with a longer neck.
My maternal grandfather had many guns over the years but, the ones I remember the best were his Marlin 336 in 35rem. that stayed behind the seat of the truck for farm emergencies; the Colt new frontier in 22lr; a Colt 1917 in 45acp that seemed to appear in his hands whenever groundhogs were spotted around the barn.
My grandfather only hunted birds and rabbits.

The uncle that got me intereted in deer hunting used a .300 Savage m99. Around the mid 1950's he scoped it with a Bushnell 4x Scopechief that had a retractable post.
Grandpa uses a 30/30, Great Grandpa used a 8mm Mauser
My maternal grandad only hunted for subsistence. 12 ga. Crescent Arms shotgun made small game into table fare - as that was what was available. I still have that gun.

My paternal grandad farmed in CO and had WY ranching roots. When I knew him he had a 12 ga. Fox Sterlingworth for winged varmints and a pair of '86 Winnies for meat hunting. I know one was a 33 but can't recall (if I ever knew) what the other was. I still have the Sterlingworth though.
My grandfather shot a Pre 64 Model 70 in 30-Gov't '06 that he won in a big buck contest. (37.75" Mule Deer Buck) He gave it to me ~20 years ago, I changed the old Weaver to a Leupold about 15 years ago and have hunted with it every fall. (Have yet to even come close to his Buck though!)
my grand dad only owned one gun a double barrel 10GA with 28" full choke barrels
257 Wby Mark V Deluxe & a Parker Double 16 ga.
22 rimfire and a single shot 12ga. His father a single shot 12ga 'goose gun' -very long barrel. No one remembered what brand they were.
my granddad used a hopkins and allen 12 ga. single... the only other gun in the house when my dad was a kid was a percussion frontstuffer that dates back as far as our family tree... 1870..... john w

both pieces are still around.....
Stevens Falling Block .22 LR

Win 1897 12-gauge solid receiver

He shot food for the table.

........A few years ago Dad "discovered" the 280 Rem ... " "One blessing I will count for today"

I too, have discovered the 280 Remington. I have 280's in Rem 700 & Ruger 77. Doubtless, the most well kept secret of the shooting sports.
Two minutes, even given hyperbole, is good. Sometimes we time each other, and the best so far is 4 minutes. The only time I was timed it took 7 minutes.
Winchester 1885 Hi-Wall in .38-55 cut back to 20 inches for a wagon gun.

Beautiful old black walnut stock. He called it "Old Beller-Whang"
My grandfathers didn't hunt, but my father in law, who was old enough to be my grandfather, hunted with a Savage 99 .300 Savage with a Weaver K2.5. He shot elk, bear and deer and would have been shocked if anyone thought it inadequate.
My two brothers and I inherited a model 100 in 284 Win.
(I haven't seen one in this forum yet!)
And two pre-64's Model 70's in .243 & .270
The scopes for the 70's are: Weaver V9 and a Balvar
We each got one and still shoot em along with our moderns.
A 12 Ga, Browning Lite 12 and a Win Mod 94 30-30.
Model 98 mauser in 8X57 resting in a Bishop stock. It now sits in my gun safe and is still used for "doe days" when we thin the herd every other year or so.

GrandPa used a Model 93 Marlin / Octagon/ Take Down - 32/40. Now - Hanging on My Wall. Dad used a Sporterized Model 98/8mm Mauser- that came Home from WW2. Brother ended up with the Mauser and Dad switched to a Marlin 36 A in 35 Rem..
Neither grandfather hunted nor did my dad; I'm the only one in the family who does and in fact my prof dad and lawyer siblings have if not an anti-hunting bias, at least a slight condescending attitude toward it.
I quit arguing/explaining about it a long time ago.
My grandfather Ed Stevenson used a 30-06 in later years. In the Newton Rifle book there are letters printed by Ed Stevenson where he corresponded with Newton quite a bit, and he held the newton rifles in high regard. He was a wolfer, and rancher here in WY. He passed away in 56 in his 80's. He had great stories that my father shared with me about Ed, and his life. He also had a winchester lever action shotgun he was deadly with on sage chickens. Dad would tell how (Dad) Stevenson would start at the top of a hill working the lever on that old shotgun, each shot he'd take a step back to catch his balance. By the time he was done shooting he'd be at the base of the hill with a mess of sage chickens down.

Very good post Sir. My Grandfather had a Winchester Model 1895 in .30-06. Thanks...Bill.
pawpaws in his 80's he as far as I know hes got a stevens 12 side by side and old .410 bolt action the only rifles hes got is two japanese rifles he brought back from WWII he had one of them sporterized and the other one is as new. I think their 6.5 millimeter but not real sure.
A Win model 54 win in thuddy thuddy. Dad still uses it to this day. Every deer he has ever killed has been with that thing. Its from the early 30's.
Grandpa didn't hunt, bu Great grandpa did.

.500 Express DOuble Barrelled
.423 Mauser (Never heard of this?)
.373 H&H
