Found a pair of sweet M70 xtr featherweights at a shop today.

Both are good shape, hunted but certainly not abused. No major scratches. The .243 looks maybe a bit newer and definitely the nicer of the two.

Any idea of the value of them? Both were $799 on the asking price.

I need a .280 like I need 5th nostril but I’m a sucker for a .280 Rem.
I've bought them for far less, but $800- roughly $900 sounds about right. They aren't making them anymore and there are guys that like that era of model 70 FWT. I can certainly understand that because they are damn nice looking and shooting rifles.
Yeah, I’m thinking I bought my 7x57 for like $650 but that before all this craziness. The belle of the is really the .243 as far as condition goes. The .280 is a smidge smoother and for some reason, seems trimmer. Neither appears to be bedded or have any trigger work done to them.
Offer $1400 for the pair...prices are only going up on the Featherweights.

I did have that thought cross my mind.
I really don't think you could go wrong...and there is no way you would ever lose money.

They sound very nice. As for bedding, they will be bedded from the factory and it will be garbage. A good glass bedding job does not hurt the value of the rifle. As for "trigger work", a simple spring change will help tremendously. That also does not affect overall value of the rifle. They sound pretty original to me and would be a sweet addition to a collection and also make great shooters as well. The XTR FWT is one I really like. The last one I came across a few months ago, I got lucky and got it for a hell of a good deal. Like someone else said, offer $1,400 for the pair, or even $1,300.00. The worst thing they can say is no. You never know, they might even agree to it.

Is the 243 long or short action?

$800 certainly isn’t high in this market. I’ve been amazed at what xtr featherweights have been bringing.
My 7x57 is one of my favorite rifles for sure.
Sounds about right. 50 here 100 there would not stop me from buying it.
$799 sounds about right nowadays, and they are well worth it.

The .243 is on a short action.

Agree!
I wouldn't mind that xtr 280! Keep us in the loop!

I like the way you think !
I guess I didn't do too bad on a recent Featherweight XTR I bought for a little over $700. It is a Winlite in 280 Remington which seemed to be unfired.

You have 4 nostrils? Post a photo.

That was a great deal, but you already knew that..
Well I brought one of them home today. Although both were there. I stopped in on the way to a jobsite and the .243 had to come home with me.

It's a sweet little XTR Fwt. If it has a mark on it, I haven't found it yet. Has Leupold DD bases and rings on it, no scope.

On the barrel it says something I've not seen. ".243 Win XTR Fwt Short Action"
Very cool. What does the serial # start with? My first year short action doesn't have that written on it. AKWolverine may know when they stamped that on the barrel.
Ok…I was off a little.

written on barrel:

Winchester M70 XTR FWT SHORT ACTION .243 WIN

SSN starts with G165

They were asking $799 for it. I gave $750. It’s as low as he’d go. Not a smokin deal but I’d say fair for sure.
I believe that is a first year (1984) short action. Pretty cool find. Weird that mine doesn't say that though.
That's great information. Thank you!

I'm really starting to like these XTR's. They're great rifles. Although not a true lightweight, they're a great balance and certainly not a heavy gun. Even scoped.

Speaking of scopes, any of you guys have a recommendation? I like Leupold well enough. I sure wish they still made gloss an option.
I’m a Trijicon slut these days mostly. They make quite a variety and have great optics.

An older gloss fixed 6x Leupold sounds about right. I pick them up from time to time.

This is how I have my 22-250 scoped. Works very well:

Great shooting rifles. I really like the XTR FWT's..
Good grab T! Sexy ass rifles for sure. Hopefully we’ll get to see a pic of it laying across a critter soon. 😃
I hope so!

You did just fine - congrats.

I was hoping you’d chime in. Thank you.

I’d also say it’s all original because the stock is mint, the blueing is great and the trigger is pretty stiff. Lol
