My question is on which to trade for.I am going to trade for a new ruger varmint in one of these calibers. Are these calibers so close it's a toss up?I reload so ammo isn't a problem.I will use this rifle to hunt and shoot paper. The 220 swift has a set of dies that comes along with it,other than that they are identical.Any recomemdations?

I have both 22-250 and a Swift in identicle rifles including the scopes. When I go p'doggin the Swift is my main go-to rifle and the 22-250 is used while the Swift is being cleaned and cooling off.

I don't really have any thing to validate the reasoning for that other than personal preference.

I would go 22/250 and have it punched to an AI, not really to gain speed but to cut out case trimming.......Blake

I have both and have used both on prairie dog hunts. I prefer the Swift and enjoy shooting it more but you probably can't go badly wrong with either.

Is your personal preffernce to the Swift round or the rifle it is in?

Thx

Both rifles are the old tang style Ruger M77V. Guess the reason for the preference is the Swift seems to create better (wider) patterns of p-dog chunks.
Those are wonderful old rifles, I had an old Swift in a tang for a long time.

Heck, how bout rechambering a Swift to 220 Wby Rocket? That would be cool and classic!
The Swift is the winner in that race as long as you don't mind handloading.

Every real varmint hunter should have at least one Swift smile
My old tang safety, pre-warning Ruger 77-V willnever be for sale.

Like Elkslayer I have both rounds but not in the same type rifles.

My 220 Swift is my first choice. Ill shoot over the close dogs with it and get them use to the fire (I shoot a dog town all day long).

When the 220 gets hot or needs cleaning, I pickup the 22-250 or my 204 Ruger. The Ruger is becoming my favorite dog rifle, its amazing what itll do.

My wife and I setup our trailer on the edge of the prairie dog towns. We watch TV, run the microwave, read the paper, work on the laptop, pet the curious cows that come to visit, and shoot P dogs just 20 feet off the front steps. This is not hunting or camping. Its rodent control.

I only have a 22-250. But, I've always wanted a Swift, for the shear speed that thing produces. My old high school shop teacher had a Win 70 in swift, and was always telling me about the merits of it . I could live comfotably with one of each. I think both could be equally accruate, and do wonders on varmints.

IMR is coming out with a new powder called IMR 4007 it lists a load at over 3950 for a 50grn bullet, in the 22-250 this is higher than any book load for the swift I have seen. with this kind of performance if it can be obtained from the 22-250, kinda really makes the decision a toss up
Kind of makes me wonder if it'll do that in the '250 then what will it do in a Swifto...grins

Has anybody got their hands on any 4007 yet? We don't have any here.

Precision handloading is certainly the way to go! Certainly to get max performance from both rounds - regular or improved.

I don't see the "need" to improve anything, but thems my preferences.

I'd also pick the Swooft, just to be diffeernt from the "250" crowd. I've shot the Swift and its a helluva round. Someday I might also dabble with the .22BR, altho its not high on the present list.
