I think all of us gun nuts have a few different guns in our head that if we ever run across at anything close to decent price we know we'll buy it.

I found another today picking up a used Win model 70 extreme weather 30-06. Ive been wanting a stainless M70 30-06 for a while but havent been bidding them up on auctions etc. Just happened to find one at a shop i frequent.

Others that over the years I waited patiently for and eventually found include a kimber montana 7 wsm I found over a dozen years ago. A nice blr in 358 I found last year. Several JC Higgins model 50s and 51s. And I recently got a savage 99 take down in 250-3000. It's rough but I've wanted one for 30 years.

So I guess by unicorn I mean guns you don't often find while doing the gun store or show circuits but ones you'll likely buy if you see while out and about. Not something you're actively trying to buy at gunbroker and willing to pay any price for.

Some I'm still watching for include:

A kimber montana in 223.

A S&W scadnium 44 that had the stainless cylinder and about a 2.75" or 3" barrel. I can't remember what's it called right now but maybe Alaskan backpacker or something like that. I've only ever seen one. I own the 4" and have carried it a lot over about 15 years but I really want that one with the stainless cylinder.

A CZ 550 fs in 9,3x62

A Blackhawk stainless convertible 45 with a 4.625" barrel in the dealer exclusive flattop medium frame. The one that weighs 36 ounces.

A nice 94 big bore in 375. Always wanted one and now that I'm casting again it seems like a good one for hunting with cast bullets.

An m77 Alaskan in 416 ruger. I had one in 375 I should have never sold. It was great with the 20" stainless barrel but I figured I didn't need two so I sold it and kept my African for sentimental reasons because I used it on my last Africa trip. I'd really rather have the shorter ss one and since I still have a 375 African I'd love a 20" alaskan.

Pretty much any Barrett fieldcraft short action for under around $2000. I love my 6mm Creedmoor and 7-08 and often regret not buying more when Whittakers cleared them out.

I have more on the list but that gets me started. Maybe some good can come of this and we can watch for each other's unicorns and help each other out. It was a fire member that found my 18.5" Barrett fieldcraft for me because he saw a post where I mentioned I wanted one. I've found several things for friends and fire members after hearing they were looking and then stumbling across one by chance.

What are your unicorn guns?

I know this is the rifles area but include any gun. I would have posted this under the hunters campfire but I was hoping to keep it more positive like the old fire days and thought the odds of that happening are better here.

Remington Model Seven in 35 Remington. Any of the KS Sevens and the stainless fluted AWR or is it ACR in a Seven.

Not a unicorn per say but one that I regret not buying. A few years back a LGS had a mint Ruger M77 from 1976. It had the 200th year stamping and I walked away when he wouldn’t budge on his $500 price. Even had a scope. When I wised up it was gone. I’ve casually been looking for one since but none have had the grain or condition of that bargain.
Posted By: 69sportfury Re: Unicorn list? - 12/13/23
Burley - Have three of your unicorns in my safe. I might be convinced to part ways with a new (no box) Big Bore Win 375, have a 100 pieces of new brass and dies and even some ammo that could go with it.

I'd been looking for a deal on an old blue/walnut 257 Roberts for several years and found one this past summer. Also for a number of years was looking for a deal on a Win 375 H&H and found a heck of a deal just randomly one day.

Wasn't looking but found a Fieldcraft in 6.5 creed last winter that was unfired for 1k. It also came home with me.

Nothing currently in particular on my wishlist, but always looking for something to jump out.

Savage 1899A in 32-40.

Marlin 62 in 256 Mag.

Not really in the market atm, but any time I peruse a shop I keep my eyes open for one of those.

Kimber Montana 223

Winchester P64 300 Win Mag

Browning BLR Laminate/SS 7-08

Winchester P64 FWT SuperGrade 270 Win

Kimber Montana 7mm WSM

I kinda feel like my kids writing to Santawhistle

I know there’s more as well, just those off the top of my head.

Always on the lookout for steals and deals but I’m over capacity now so been posting them here as I find them. There’s a couple I’d make room for if I found them at a decent price….. a Savage 99 Saddle gun .250-300, a Marlin, Savage or Winchester in .375 Win, and a LH Winchester 70 Stainless Classic in .270. Demand is high and usually when found prices are higher than I’d consider.

KAR98AZ WWI German cavalry carbine.

Springfield Krag Carbine. Spanish-American War era.

S&W M29 Mountain Gun (pre-hillary hole).

Browning BSS Sporter in 20 gauge.

Any English or Scottish SxS shotgun that I can afford.
( This greatly diminishes the possibility of being fulfilled. Ever.)

I'd better stop now. Getting depressed 😞.

1903 M-S carbine in 6.5x54

1903 Springfield with WW1 provenance

Those are it for the hard-to-find classics. Anything else I really want can be built in one way or another.

Have been lucky to be able to buy and enjoy a few of my unicorns. The few that remain are both rare and some common run of the mill stuff that never surfaced when I had the money.

Winchester Mod 71 carbine with the bolt peep. Have a browning currently but want an original.

Winchester big bore .375. Have 2 marlins now, an original as a 336 rebored and love the caliber.

Win 1885 in .30-06. Just really enjoy single shots and think this would be fun.

Winchester 1885 low wall in 22lr. The model with the 1/2 round-1/2 octagonal barrel and small game engraving.

Lastly a Winchester model 42 .410. Have a copy of all model 12s plus a few commemorative browning reproductions, would really enjoy potting rabbits with an original 42.

Remington 700 classic in 8x57. Had one a few years ago and foolishly sold it, if I come across another at a fair price I plan on buying it.

Winchester m70 featherweight with crf in 7x57- know of one for sale but price is pretty steep.

Winchester 54 in original configuration 270 win or in 30-06.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Unicorn list? - 12/13/23
Lots of them get me all tingly, but I’m trying to be more selective these days as it’s pretty crowded around here and there’s not many I’m willing to turn loose. It’s also a terrible market for selling used stuff- (thanks Joe!), so turning stuff I’m done with into cash is tough.

Among those I fancy are older MS carbines, and some rifles, plus I wouldn’t mind adding another Browning 1885 for some mild round like .357, .30WCF, or .38/55. OTOH, the two I have don’t get out as often as they should, so that tempers my lust a bit.

I'm no longer in the market, but a friend of mine and I regret passing on a couple of them when distributors were clearing them out cheap. I certainly could have handloaded them to their real potential and they'd have been fine deer/pig rifles around our camp.

Only one at the moment: My holy grail

S&W 629 5” Stainless Classic 44 magnum - Pre-Lock

I could probably go without buying another gun if I had one of these in my collection.

It sure would be nice to find a clean stainless Rem 700 KS in .280 for a decent price or any price I suppose since they are tough to find these days.
Posted By: Sheister Re: Unicorn list? - 12/13/23
Only a couple come to mind. I would jump at a Dakota Model 10 full rifle in 223, 222, or a similar cartridge, or just an action I could build one off of- if the price was right. Also, I've been looking for a Sako A1, or 461 Vixen in 222 for years for a price I could afford. I've foolishly passed on a couple many years ago and regret it ever since...

This is less something that I'm actively looking for or would probably hand over the money for if someone really offered it... and more fun to think about.

Three pairs (one of each for my son and myself) of Winchesters:
- Two pre-64 M70s chambered in 257 Roberts built in 1956
- Two pre-64 M70s chambered in 358 Winchester built in 1956
- Two Model 1892s built in 1931 chambered in 32-20.

Came so close to ordering one in the mid 90s. Didn't want to wait and a little more than I wanted to spend.

Think if I had bought one, it would have saved me a chit load of money in my attempt to chase the perfect rifle over the last 30 years.

I had a .22-250 Fieldcraft in the cart, when Whittakers was blowing them out for $1500 and change. I regret not buying one.

I'd also like to find a CZ, or similar, small-scale rifle in .221 Fireball. Maybe build one on a Howa Mini?

I had one with the McMillan stock and foolishly sold it to build a semi custom. I'd love to have it back but it didn't shoot the heavy bullets well so I thought I needed something else and replaced it with an 8 twist 280 ai remage.

I don't recall for sure but I think it went to a fire member.

I should have shot it a bit more before selling it. I just figured I wanted a 22" 8 twist at the time. IiRC it shot 150s pretty well. I should have tried a few more loads because in retrospec it was about ideal for what I want. I sometimes wish I would have just went plain 280 on my remage. I like the way plain 280s fit and feed better than the AI. The AI gives me aroundb50 fps and less trimming but the plain one is slick and works great on a rem LA. That KS fed and functioned great.

Ruger No. 3 .375 Win. (nice one on GB right now - .375 Win. seems to be on quite a few of our lists I just can't bring myself to bid on it right now)
Remington 141 carbine, one in .25 and one in .35, factory sling swivel on the action tube bracket, tang mounted peep (I forget who made it but specifically for the 2 screws in the back edge of the receiver)
Finally found one of my unicorns last year - 1979 Crosman 766 in mint condition. Same one that started this craziness 45 years ago smile

I want a high quality falling block single shot. Probably a Low Wall. Something in a less than 30-06 recoil caliber with high quality wood.

A decent double rifle chambered in 7x57 to 9.3x74, just in a cartridge I can get components for. Probably a Merkel like one of GWB’s. Most importantly, I want it to shoot not barrels to a reasonable regulation out to 175-200 yards.

I really don’t have a unicorn, myself. I just am always on the lookout for something interesting. Right now I want a super light rifle to keep at mom’s house for when I go back home elk hunting.

ULA, Fieldcraft, Remington Ti, etc. I see them in the classifieds but they’re either too much $, or they have a twist that I am not mildly interested in.

I want to spend an week using a pile of what Geedubya has in inventory. Shrapnel has some beauties as well.

To be honest I've kinda scratched most the itches. If there's one it would be an Merkel or Blaser single shot stalking rifle in 7x57R. To me the 7x57R has an shaped that appeals to my eye and I'm drawn to it. The little stalking rifles are a perfect way to enjoy it.

Over the last about 20 years I've been on here you've probably influenced people's list more than anyone. You pointed me to the montana 7wsm waters years ago so when I found one maybe 12 years back I knew to drink it up. It's still a favorite.

I've also put a lot of rounds through my faux ti 223ai you pointed me towards in maybe 2006 or so. I haven't shot out the little 21" 3 groove 8 twist pacnor yet. I wish the guy in Ohio who chambered it for about $85 was still doing the work. He was it&d or id&t or something but did good quick work at a great price.

I need to try another pacnor. Haven't used bought one since before the fire. I wonder have the 8400 wsm duplicate programmed into their new cnc lathe. I have a 270 wsm that needs fixed with a slightly bigger bored 8 twist.

I just bought a 7-08. It's a Ruger American compact. Got it from the local Sportsmans Warehouse. I don't really have a need for it but thought it had that "cool" factor going for it. I made some brass for it from .308 brass a couple of years ago. Long before I bought the gun. I have some bullets but I need a scope and it will be shootable.

Posted By: odonata Re: Unicorn list? - 12/14/23
I'm a right-hander who shoots left-handed. I also have a nostalgic fondness for some of the classic calibers many of which were never made commercially in left-handed rifles. So I often have to wait for the rare rebarreled 70, 77 or 700 that comes in a caliber I'm interested in to pop up on an auction site. It's easy to find left-handed 6.5CM, 30-06, 7mm RM or 300 WM. It's close to impossible to find a 257 Roberts, a 300 H&H Magnum or a 35 Whelen. If I really want one, it'll probably be up to me to have one made.

Some other rare rifles are left-handed centerfire Kimbers. A left-handed Sako or Steyr with a stutzen/mannlicher stock is pretty uncommon. It's hard to find a nice Winchester 1895 in .303 British at an affordable price (one sold at RIA this past weekend for $4,700). If I do find one, it's usually in Canada. I saw a LH Husqvarna in 25-06 once that I regret not buying since I've never seen another one like it. I've only seen one of the Browning BLR's in 25-06 that were made in a special run of 150 for Kones Korner. I let a Ruger #1 in .404 Jeffery slip through my fingers which would have been fun to own. Finding a nice upland SxS shotgun in 28 or 20 gauge that I really like with a neutral cast or cast on for a LH shooter can be a challenge.

The problem is there's simply not enough money & space to buy them all so it has gotten a lot easier to pass on new purchases since I fortunately have everything I need.

I walked into an art store yesterday and came across a rack of old rifles in the back of the store. Mostly they were Winchesters. They had 2 64's, one a rifle in 30/30 and one a carbine in 32 Special. They had a couple of 348's and some others I didn't look at. They had a Winchester pre 64 in 243 Win and a Ruger #1 international in 7mm. They had several old shotguns at least one was a Parker DHE 12 ga.

It looked like they had bought an estate. Must have been 20 to 25 firearms. Normally I would have gone over everything in detail, but just couldn't seem to get interested. I went to the Dr today....Said I was ok, but I'm not sure.

Not that there's not plenty of rifles that I think are really neat that I don't have, just that it doesn't mean much to me at this point. I should get rid of some that I have, but I know I got enough I don't need to add more.

Just looking forward to enjoying what I like to shoot, even more.

Got a few I’ve missed out on the past for lack of cash:
Ruger no 1 RSI 7 X 57. Pawn shop wouldn’t take my Remington 742 in 30/06 as partial trade. It was only $300 at that time. Remington 700 with KS stock in 7mm REM Mag It was $400. Just the wrong caliber for me. Had it been a 30/06… German 98 Guild rifle, take down with ribbed barrel great iron sights in 7 X 57. It was $400 and you could buy a NIB Winchester or Remington bolt gun for that at the time. The stock needed refurbished and ammo was scare. Should’ve had my butt kicked. Pre 64 Winchester 94 for $250 about 5 years ago. Stupid on my part. I sold a Win 94 Trapper while trying to get my disability. Wish I had it and a Win 70 Westerner in 30/06 back. Too heavy. A S & W model 17 with 6” barrel that someone left in sheepskin rug. Ruined the finish and it was $100. I thought it was too high. I should have bought, had it shot peened or even sent back to S & W. Also there was a Colt Anaconda 4” barrel that I was gonna trade a Ruger Blackhawk.357/9mm Convertable with a 6” barrel for it and he wanted $50 boot money. I thought it should have been even trade. I was stupid. A new Ruger Vaquero in 45 LC 4 5/8” barrel. Guy bought it , walked out door and dropped on the curb. Had a concrete rash and since he was a great customer; they swapped it out. Had $189.99 on the tag and OTD was $175 no tax. To broke to buy it and no layaway. Then the N S &W with 5” barrel in 44 mag. Rough but only $150. My poverty hurt me again. I’d like to have all these and more.

Not sure about his, but in my Montana, 40.5 grains of H4350, Alpha cases, CCI200's and a 147 ELD loaded at 2.8" works real decent for me. About 2680 or so. RL17, 26, etc, are all good too. Damn near anything seems to shoot in the couple I have had.

Got one in a ultra lite 2 yrs or so ago that's very good to excellent condition. Don't think it would be considered a great price, but I got it.

My “unicorn” within the OP’s parameters is an excellent condition Remington 700 ADL in .243 — mid-late-70s vintage. Dad had one when I was a kid that was “mine.” The nostalgia comes from it being the rifle that I was using when I decided to get serious about my hunting marksmanship. I finally matured enough to understand that I owed it to the animals that I was hunting to settle down and make a good shot. This buck was my first “one shot kill” and began the self-made expectation that I still hold today.

I loved that rifle! It was topped with a Weaver K4 and shot the Sierra 100gr Semi-Pointed bullets very well. I have accrued a couple of boxes of the now discontinued bullets… now I’m just waiting on the right rifle to come along.

Passed on a 170 in 35 Rem a couple yrs back for $400 something, don't remember the exact price. Probably shouldn't have but it had the hallmarks of being well used. Not beat up, but used hard enough I didn't quite trust it being parts are none existent.

I have a mint 170 in 30-30 carbine. Great handling little rifle with a whisper quiet tang safety. Still sits in my safe, never used it.
Posted By: Muddly Re: Unicorn list? - 12/17/23
Had a 170B .35 awhile back. Jammed like nobody's business. Keeping the cartridge guide screw, the one under the ejection port, tight helped. But not enough for sufficient reliability.
Pity. That rifle was ACCURATE!!!

What a fun thread!

I wish I would’ve been the bozo that found Gary Cooper’s Griffin and Howe Springfield .30-06 at a yard sale. It recently sold at RIA for like $21,000.00! I never would have sold it.

I want to have a Savage 99 is each of the “savage” calibers: .22 HP, .250-3000, .300 and .303! I only have the .300 so far.

I want to buy each of my siblings, my kids and my wife a nice Marlin Model 39.

Would love to have a 1922 Springfield in .22 and one in a .22 Hornet.

A Colt SAA 7.5” barrel in anything between .32-20 to .45 Colt.

To wit, I have a lot of my unicorns:

Two Winchester Model 70’s in .30-06!

A Mauser 98 Sporter in 7x57.

Marlin Model 39 A.

High Standard Sport King

A Winchester 1894 in .25-35, two Winchester model 1892’s one in .25-20 and the other was a .32-20 that my great grandfather converted to .357 Magnum.

“Oberndorf Sporting Mauser in 10.75x68 Mauser. I would immediately throw my 416 ruger in the dumpster.”

I have that! A B model that was a Rhodesian game department gun. Looks every bit the part.

I tried to buy this rifle for about 3 years, and after I gave up and bought a Genschau”?” Geco, it almost fell in my lap.

Coolest rifle I own, no doubt!

There sitting on a rack was a very lightly used Kimber Montana in 223...for $950! The guy at the shop said someone had brought it in less than an hour earlier to sell on consignment. Unicorns do exist...

A Kimber Montana/Barrett/NULA/6-lug MK V, 1:7 223Rem w/2.5" mag box.

I have the Kimber so configured of my own doing, and have the parts (except a bbl which is but a phone call away) to do a 2nd fairly soon, then the girls will each have one for shooting everything from 35's to 88's and beyond.

It's rumored there were a few SS Ultimate Classic M70's from the custom shop in 223Rem but I've never seen one nor heard of anyone directly that has one or has seen one.

I'd love to have a Custom Shop SS Ultimate Classic M70 Fwt w/octagon bbl but I'd never actually spend the $$ to buy one if I did find it.

Actually more than any rifle, what I'd really like is about 20 more NF 2.5-10x32/42 w/IHR reticles.

It's interesting how the "rumors" from different custom shops abound. When I worked in a gun shop in the late 90's the "rumor" was that all of the M70 "Heavy Varmint" and Custom Shop rifles were equipped with Schneider barrels.

The same period rumors about Rem 40X and custom shop rifles was that they had Hart barrels.

I can say with 100% certainty that I'm not sure if either rumor is true.

If my mental rolodex isn't too rusty, I believe that Weatherby Accuracy-Mark rifles of that era were advertised as having Krieger Criterion barrels right in the Weatherby brochure.

I am fortunate, or perhaps persistent, since I have owned every grail gun that I truly desired. More often than not they just turned out to be a "want" and went down the road. What is odd though is that most of my keepers (using firearms) weren't grail guns but were ones that I had just acquired for one reason or the other and they ended up staying.

The Schneider rumor is possibly true; or at least repeated enough to have become so on the net. I can say definitively that the custom sharpshooter and custom sporting sharpshooter from that era DID have Schneider barrels. Another “rumor” from a trusted source is that the early stainless pushfeeds used either lilja or Krieger blanks … I won’t finger the member but he’s welcome to chime in on that one.

This talk above reminds me of another unicorn I’ve never verified - full stainless custom sporting sharpshooter in 7 STW.

You can get in on this one if you hurry, but looks like you will pay for it if you want it.

I bought one from Desert Mule Deer back in 2016 - I think he might have bought it from you?

I foolishly sold it after a while, don't recall who I sold it to but pretty sure it was here on the campfire...
