7-08 OR THE 260 REM OR 264 I HAVE A 264 REM BUT WAS THINKING OF GOING TO ONE OF THE OTHER ROUNDS .I dont reload and it hard to find 264 ammo plus really dont want to take this old gun to the field its in prestein condition for a 67 but want the knock down power and long range capabilitys.Read the post on here about the 260 but it to seems like ammo would be hard to find.Im going to a big firearms swap meet at the end of the month and need some imput.

All of the three you mention would/could be hard to find ammo for. At least in locale it is.

Of your picks, & given your critera, I'd go 7mm-08 and stock up on ammo. IMO, it's a little more mainstream than the others & ammo should be avail at most well stocked gun stores.

The .260 is a sweetheart, though. wink

In the 7-08 range of use the 308 Winchester is by far the most popular and available ammo wise.

The 260 never caught on and what with all the new rounds coming out every month its doomed not that anything is wrong or for that matter special about it.

The 7-08 is excellent but not that popular everywhere.

The 260 is gaining popularity daily and is the pick of the more intelligent and experienced hunter. As more and more people find out how good it is its popularity is growing expotentially.

Get one and be the happiest hunter in your locality

You might consider a .270 Winchester for a light-recoiling, powerful, flat-shooting, easy-to-find round for hunting everything up to elk or moose.

There's few rounds better suited for thin-skinned game than the combination of the 130 grain bullet in a .270 Winchester.

Recoil is on par with the .308 Winchester. smile

I just cobbled together a 700/Youth in a 308 with a Ti handle on it, I gotta tell you it is one user friendly lil rig.

I imagine you can find 7/08 ammo ok, at least that is the way it is around here. Now finding 308 ammo around here is in every corner store.

I'd go 308

Ditto. If I were to start all over with one cartridge it would be the 308.

Fired the 06AI today. 165 X doing 3070fps from a 22" barrel, with some room to grow.

Good guess.

A shooter bud of mine from Boze uses one with a 25 or 26" tube and I believe he is running the 168's @ 3150.

I am pretty sure you won't use the 180's but on a guess would you guess they would go 29?

Thx

In fact I have a few brand new boxes of Barnes 180's and even some 200gr TSX's.

I have no doubt a few more inches of barrel would help, but I'm thinking 2900. I'm running moly in this rig also..
