they were ballistic tips before they were cool...

They were sort of the early ballistic tip. The bronze nose pushed back upon hitting game and supposedly forced open the bullet. I used them back in the 80's and they worked well enough, but did not expand as violently as a ballistic tip does.

They were a favorite of my grandfather's. I killed my first buck with one in 1960 An '06 at 25 yds. Facing shot. Bullet entered the center of the chest. Found the base of the jacket imbedded in the outer edge of the liver.
Didn't like their lack of penetration. Went to a standard soft point design and never looked back. I suspect they hang on because they open fast on deer sized game and have many traditional followers.

Erimicus's experience is consistent with a friend of mine who used the 150Gr. Bronze Point for years. He had a pretty good percentage of shot & drop deer, but every now and then one just seemed to run off. A couple that did drop didn't have deep penetration. That experience plus my own with Ballistic tips, leads me to beleive, if anything, the Bronze points (at least in 150Gr.) penetrated even less than the Ballistic Tips.
My direct experience is with 180Gr. Bronze Points. In an older Ruger #1. They will give me 1/2" groups all day, but I've never shot them at game.

I shot one deer with 150 gr. Rem. Bronze pt. in a .308. It was a big northern whitetail buck. Range about 80 yd. Bullet went in the side of the chest, and didn't even make it to the other side before completely disintegrating. Killed the deer, but bullet seemed real fragile.

I used them a lot in a .270 and 30-06 back when, and they sure will fail from time to time...I have seen them blow up and I have seen them not open up at all...They were so bad I finally just gave my large supply of them to a guy that liked them and had some Sierras..I then went to the WW open point expanding bullet and they were a tad soft but they always killed like the hammer of Thor on deer..

I ranged a big cow elk for my partner last December at 277yards with a 30% uphill tilt. At the shot the old girl took two steps and collapsed. Post mortem showed a perfect double lung with a quarter size departure. Rancher/guide said she easily weighed 5 bills in the upright position.
The cartridge was a 30-06 with 180 gr. Bronze Points out of a Remington pump.

They were originally marketed to keep the lead tips from being destroyed in the magazine, thus destroying accuracy. The fact that they expanded quickly turned a lot of people off.

RugerNo3: I don't know about the original marketing, but back as far as the early 80's they were marketed as a bullet for long range hunting that would expand appropriately at the slower impact velocities of long range.

Yes, sort of ballistic tip type deal. My wife has doen well on elk with bronze points in her 270. Everyone hit has gone down in short order.

I helped put up hay on a buddies ranch in the early 90s and he gave me a couple hundred bronze tipped .270 bullets he had purchased mistakenly, instead of .30 cals.

I loaded them up and proceeded to use them for deer and elk. I was very impressed. They flattened every single animal I ever pulled the trigger on. I recall popping a half a dozen decent sized mulies that never took 3 steps after getting punched with the bronze tipped bullets out of my old Browning A bolt .270.

Worked for me.
