Yep! that has "Russia" written all over it! grin

one thing I have never seen in the discussions of this beast is an actual target.

it's also interesting that it's listed in 30/06 - a very high pressure cartridge for a double.

Given that the going rate for a "plain" double is $10,000-$20,000 I can't see this being more than a toy, and maybe a liability at that.

YMMV

Posted By: Savage_99 Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/15/08
I have seen the Baikal shotguns and indeed the finish is crude. They function.

At one point the subject double rifle in 45-70 was priced about $550 ea before Remington got involved. Even then the price only went up a hundred or so. The thousand dollar price here is due of course to the short supply with only 30-06's available.

There has been hope, perhaps dreaming, that such a gun could be produced. For sure no SXS double rifle has been made before at such a price that I have heard of.

Of course its a toy. In some sense most guns are. If one functions it could be improved. Oh well, I am just looking for feedback.

The link is on the Remington site, still.

Baikal of Canada here.

Blaser, to my knowledge, has been the only company to date to successfully market a jack-screw adjusted double.
(And their action, while I personally don't like the feel or cocking safety, is orders of magnitude above this in quality). In fact, I believe they're going for $10-12K now.

I also personally couldn't get past the "feel" of the screen door gasket ribs.

It's also worth noting that fit is all to a double - both the stock and the trigger alignment. I've shot right handed doubles left handed and vice versa. I've also shot short stocked doubles and there are few things less pleasant or useful.

Savage 99,
A few have been sold in Australia in 30/06. They're agricultural and can do with some smoothing up work. Once that's done, your still a few thousand dollars ahead of the opposition. I know of one that was smoothed up, converted to single-trigger (from a Baikal shotgun I believe) and rechambered to a wildcat 7x65R opened to 30cal. Owner loves it ... and his single-shot 9.3x74R which cost under AUD$500.
The regulating jack screw is a revelation to those that spent hours fiddling with loads to try to regulate old English doubles ... atleast this is a SxS double rifle that you dont mind getting very wet whilst hunting!
Cheers...

Con I just spoke to the Mgr. of Baikal in Canada and suggested
that they try really, really try hard to get them to make the
double rifle either the S x S or over & under in 9.3 x 62 and they
wouldn't have to worry about any other calibre, what say you
to that! I think if everybody hit on the Canada office or Rem.
in USA and all other countries for the double in 9.3 maybe just
maybe they might respond . Cheers NC
Posted By: Savage_99 Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/15/08
While I agree that the 9.3-62 might be a practical choice it seems or at least used to be so that the 45-70 had quite a following.

Of course the gun must be made. It seems that 30-06's were made which was never the first choice for a double.

Perhaps there is some problem with the 45-70?

In any case I could go for a 9.3-62. Come to think of it I might prefer it over the 45-70.

As to the over and under rifle well forget it for me. I have no interest in a over and under. None at all.

FWIW, there is a new thread on AR about the SPR 22

a few notable quotes on the POS rifle from the two who've gotten their hands on one:

#1

Well I picked up my Rem SPR 22 30-06 on Thursday. I spent almost four hours on Friday fitting the forend to the receiver.
The fit where the curve of the forend meets the receiverr was so tight that the latch would not close.I lapped the radius until it fit.
The ejector was so tight that the action had to be opened over my knee and forced closed.
I cleaned rust out of hole where the ejector rod goes and freed it up some.
I went to the range and used Remington ammo 180gr Corelocks.
After 2 shoots the action was hard to open and the primers were set back.
I tried Federal Classic 180gr Hi Shock SP. The results were the same except the primer set back was not as bad.I believe this is because Fed pimers are harder than Rem.When I got home and inspected the cases more throughly I noticed that the shoulders had moved forward.
I tried a no go gauge in both chambers and the rifle closes on gauge. I believe the cambers are long.
I am going to call Remington on Monday. I will post more when I hear from them.

#2

I also had very simmalar problems with mine.
Hard to open and the safety stopped working.
Mine had primer pucker marks around the firing pin.
The firing pin holes were over sized.

Mine was one of the very first to come to Canada and was a Baikal. I sent it in for repair but the store I was dealing with screwed up and Baikal got it back not knowing there was anything wrong with it.

yep! sounds like a winner! It's apparently possible to get a $16,000 rifle for $800 afterall. whistle

Thanks for the link Lefty. The big surprise to me is that I know Dave Sorel well and we belong to the same club! We shoot together at times.

Dave has been to Africa for plains game and has an active gun collection.

When I opened the link it was just a little too late at night to call him but I will talk it up with him tomorrow.

I have been off of AR for about a year. Seems as if I have missed things. Thanks.

Here is a picture of our range.

that range looks impossibly green compared to what I'm used to...
Posted By: ROMAC Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/17/08
I was at the range the other day and the guy next to me was shooting one. He had one barrel shooting well and was trying to regulate the other with the screw under the barrel. He liked his and was going to use it to shoot hogs in Texas. He was shooting 220 grain Corelokts and the concussion was so severe that I wish I had plugs under my earmuffs.

If you look behind my Savage 1899 in .38-55 you can see it.

I thought remington discontinued the rifle - it isn't listed on their web site as a current offering.

True, nor is the supply certain or steady. They (Baikal & now Rem.) have broken promise after promise on delivery.

Still, the gun is of interest. [Linked Image]
Posted By: Nailcreek Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/21/08
I know that I'd really like one, but not in 30-06. I get the sense that the action isn't quite up to the task. I wonder whether it would be better using the low pressure rounds?

I would think that such a set=up would be a natural in a rimmed cartridge - 45/70 in particular.
Posted By: hillbillybear Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/21/08
I saw one in .30/06 at a local gun shop about 3 weeks ago. It looked and handled better than I thought they would but the price $894.00 +tax was too much for that quality of gun.

I can see it clearly!! Double rifle chambered in 348 Winchester and peep sights, with a European stock and regulated at 50 yards.

Posted By: Steve_NO Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/21/08
they are really, really crudely made....I'd like to see someboy get one to really regulate and stay regulated. The stock pattern is really ugly.....its just a typical Baikal gun. I'd love to hear from somebody who got a good one they're happy with, but not holding my breath.

Looks like junk.
Posted By: tbear Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/22/08
I have a Baikal O/U in 30-06 that is a typical product from their plant. A friend hunted stags in Russia with one, & liked it very much, & I was able to obtain at a good price. There is no good price on a Baikal. I could shoot about a 2-3" group with shots from both barrels using a red dot scope. Action was very stiff but, I was able to smooth up some. I used on a boar hunt & shot 2 for meat. Its a very utilitarian rifle. I have many rifles & intend to sell at the first opportunity.
Posted By: daniel Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 07/22/08
Well now, I don't know whether perhaps the rifles you get in the US are different, but I bought a Baikal IZH-94 in 9.3x74R here in Australia earlier this year, and I'm very happy with it. Sure, it is a utilitarian sort of firearm, but mine handles surprisingly well, is fitted and finished to a standard about as good as any other base model firearm nowadays and it has proved reliable so far. These Baikal firearms have a good reputation here in Oz for being robust and rugged tools, and my rifle seems to be forged on the same anvil.

[Linked Image]

I fitted a 4x Leupold and loaded up a batch of 286gn Woodleigh RN bullets and within 20 rounds had two rounds from each barrel forming a 4 shot group 1" across at 50 yds, so I certainly wouldn't complain about the accuracy nor about the ability to regulate using the jackscrew.

Admittedly it doesn't like the Woodleigh PPs quite as well, but still keeps 4 rounds well within the 3.5 moa specification. It might do a little better now too, since I had the triggers fettled last week to get them both to a nice crisp 4 lbs (they were a little heavy as issued) as well as getting the safety converted to non-automatic. Anyway, I'll be happy enough to use that Woodleigh 286 gn PP load on water buffalo next month, and I have no reason to doubt that the rifle will do the job.

+1 to "utilitarian".

I hope, for your sake, that Remington has required the Russians to improve their QC, as "Russian QC" is an oxymoron if ever I have heard/seen 1!

I had an EAA IZH-94 in 12 over 6.5x55 that was either the worst, or 2nd worst, firearm that I've ever owned. Almost everything about it was oversized, often to point of being both crude in construction and clumsy in execution. The LOP to the front trigger was too long for the "average" 5'10" to 6' human, or at least those with standard issue arms. It was certainly not a firearm that I would trust in the field, particularly for something as big as buffalo. I sold it for $150, 1/2 what I paid for it NIB, and was glad to get rid of it. The guy who bought it from me likes it, but there is no accounting for taste, as he is married to a red headed woman!

Posted By: tbear Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 08/06/08
Now, don't go knocking red heads. My wife & 2 very attractive daughters are all red heads. Mine was very red also but, as I matured(aged) it turned brown & now gray. Back to the Rem./Baikal, if some of us only had this rifle to work with I'm sure game could be shot. In today's US market guns like the Baikal/EAA/Rem. double rifles fall far from most hunters expectations.
Posted By: burner Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 08/06/08
Something about this gun scares me. Having handled the Baikal/Remington shotguns, I just don't know that I'd want to fool around with a 30-06 version.

They are clumsily solid, like an AK (which is one of my favorite guns, BTW) but rough around the edges...I just don't know about the design.
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 08/06/08
A whole red headed family, you must have looked like the Weasley Family from the Harry Potter books/movies! I, too, have red hair, but mine is now about 50% white and has faded from red to strawberry blond.

I met my friend at the range today who had a Rem. Baikal 30-06 SXS. He had many problems with it including excessive headspace. He returned it for replacement and it was decided to cancel his order and refund the money. He has not got the money back yet.

EAA did not treat or speak to him well. Remington is trying to correct that and they have been polite.

He now has a couple Pedersoli double rifles and considers the Russian gun to be NG.
Posted By: 260Remguy Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 08/14/08
What a surprise!

When I couldn't get my IZH-94 in 12/6.5x55 to shoot groups with the rifle barrel, EAA's response to my calls was (in not so many words) "Tought $hit, what did you expect from a $299 combination gun?". I never could get the friggin' thing to shoot a group worthy of even being called a group, more like a random pattern, and the guy who bought it from me for $150 told me that he hasn't had any better success.

BTW, for anybody out there with an itch for an inexpensive O/U rifle, CDNN has the last of its 30-06 Russian O/Us on sale for $299. Not that I'd recommend them, but they are out there just waiting for somebody to waste their hard earned $$.

Thanks TCI. I had seen that ad and to tell you I am scared off of the Baikals.

It was just a whim anyway. Now to think of it I am not sure I want to shoot heavy loads in a 45-70 at my age. My friend had one of the Pedersoli 45-70 doubles rechambered to 45-120!
Posted By: TC1 Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 08/15/08
I think the guy in that add summed it up pretty well. It's a great gun to shoot tin cans and feral pigs with. I think it would make a nice novety gun for playing around with but I'm sure I would grow bored with it too quickly.

I've done the same thing with those NEF Handi rifles in .45-70 a few times. Buy one, play with awhile then sell to buy something I could really use. They changed the laws down here in Mississippi and now you can hunt "primitive weapons" season with a .45-70 instead of a muzzle loader. I've got one that I'm hanging onto these day's wink

I just spent a week in Australia's Northern Territory, culling buffalo and pigs. My Baikal 9.3x74R O/U performed perfectly, and accounted for about 20 buff and a number of of pigs without a hiccup.

Just a couple of other points to add:

Since I had the trigger pulls tuned (a nice crisp 4lbs each), and did a bit more fine tuning of the regulation, my rifle is putting 4 shots (two from each barrel) into about 2-2.5 moa, with the top barrel just above the bottom barrel at 100 yards. This is using Woodleigh's 286 gn PP, which performed perfectly on buffalo.

The rifle handles very well, making snap shots easy, and the iron sights work well for this (and are easy to adjust), but I mounted a 4x Leupold on hand-detachable mounts as the primary sight.

It is surprising how quickly shots can be put on target. Bearing in mind that I was engaged in culling it is worth noting that a colleague armed with a 9.3x62 bolt action noticed that I was able to sustain a higher rate of aimed shots than he could. This will not always be useful of course, but was a rather unexpected result.

As for claims the rifle is junk, well, I have been shooting for over 30 years, and have a fair number of rifles I could have taken to the NT, but I had no qualms about taking the Baikal. As I said in an earlier post it (and other examples I've looked at) stands comparison with other mass-market offerings in terms of fit and finish, and these Baikals are built like a tank.

It is easy to write off a rifle without trying it, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

In France the Baikal can be bought for around 850 euros sometimes less, Remington distributor don't import the version made for the US market. As all russian or soviet made guns finish is a bit crude but they perform flawlessly, are precise for the job they are made for. With a little money and a good gunsmith (if you're not used to gunsmithing)you will have a real cost effective rifle. In 9,3x74R they can go for most game on earth providing the right bullet at the right place. If you like 45-70 express the Italian firm Rizzini had send me one over under to test. Will get it next week. They prepare a side by side for september in 45-70, 405 and 450-400 but will be considerably more expensive.....

Posted By: MartyBoy Re: Rem. Double Rifle? - 04/19/09
I have enjoyed the posts on this and other forums on the Baikal SPR22 Double rifle recently imported by EAA and then Remington. It remains to be seen who will pick up the line if Remington has really dropped their importation. EAA has told me they will import them in the future.
The subject of the worth and utility of the SPR22s has been hotly debated. Many, as the Aussie gentleman above, report great success with the Baikal IZH-94 Express O/U rifle in 9.3X74R. Others, especially many who have not handled or even seen the SPR22, express loathing and disdain for any Russian Double Rifle "junk". It reminds me of our early thoughts on the AK 47 series battle rifles. Again,we thought them junk, until our men encountered them in combat and the laughing stopped.
I have bought two SPR22s in the last two months, one each in 30-06 and 45-70. Like many others, I had a low opinion of Baikal products, never having owned or even handled one. But when I saw one advertised in GunsAmerica, I acted quickly to buy one at $935, and liked the feel and look of it so much I follwed up with a $700 purchase of an '06 two weeks later. Handling and shooting them has been fascinating. Certainly I am not done with the shooting part, but early results say I'll have little trouble in reasonable point-of-aim regulation for both.
I haven't settled on a given load for the '06 yet. Probably a Remington factory 180 grain load that sells at the big boxes on sale for around $15 will be just the ticket. While I like the '06, I would much have preferred it be chambered in 7.62X54R, the Russian battle cartridge. That one is rimmed, powerful and probably more available cheaply than the '06 at present. My other thought is to rechamber to .30R Blaser. It has the same operating pressures, exotic, and made to clean up an '06 chamber. Of course, other than the fact I like rimmed cartridges for a double rifle, there is nothing wrong with the '06.
Now, as to the 45-70. Boy, this one has evoked quite a firestorm of arguments. No, it is not possible to make a 45-70 into a 458 Win Mag, nor a .450 Nitro, literally or figuritively. The barrels seem far too small for the Nitro and only a madman would try to rechamber to .458 Mag. But if you do, write me with results, please. Obviously the case capacity of the 45-70 precludes loading it to anywhere near the potency of the other two cartridges, although it is no toy. (I'm thinking of rechamber to 45-90.)
What about the reports by some of this defect or that of the SPR22s right out-of-the-box? Except for a well reported failure to stay open fully, to easily access loading, the gritty triggers, medium level of finish, and less than stellar front sight, the rest of the rifles seem pretty satisfactory. Poor triggers? I have 5 Weatherbys, all with triggers no better. Match grade trigger on a Kimber M84? Mine wasn't out of the box, nor was it after a trip back to the factory. A Ruger M77 whose extractor slipped past the fired case after firing, since new? They did fix it, but again, not perfect when sold. Raceways and feed ramps so rough the rifle barely feeds rounds? My $2000 Ruger Magnum .416 Rigby suffered that fate. I cleaned it up. Frankly, these are examples which are way too frequent in expensive American rifles as well. Criticising inexpensive Baikals for these weaknesses is valid, but it is hardly exclusive to them.
Lets reflect briefly on the one thing most debated on the forums; what is the strength of the SPR22 in 45-70 and what is the safe level of pressure of the ammo fired in it? We start with a great advantage: the SPR22 is chambered for the 30-06. While the barrel markings and owner's manual state SAAMI ammo only is to be used in the rifle, that frankly gives little guidance. Surely one can feel safe in firing the Hornady 325 grain/2050 fps Leverevolution load as I do, as it is loaded to SAAMI compliant pressures. But what about moving into Marlin M95 levels, level 2 45-70?
We start that answer with the fact that Marlin's owner's manuals also warn about using only SAAMI compliant loads in the M95. Yet, they use the same action in the 45-70 as in the .450 Marlin and .444 Marlin, both loaded to far higher pressures than 45-70 SAAMI compliant loads. Experience has, of course, demonstrated that 40,000 psi loads do not strain a Marlin M95, regardless of what the owner's manual says, a fact admitted by a Marlin Vice-President in an interview some years back. Has the owner's manual been changed to reflect what we all know and Marlin has admitted? Nope.
There are many babblings in the hinterlands that the SPR22 in 45-70 is safe only with "Trapdoor" loads, meaning the 1873 model from Springfield. I can only assume this means that these chaps believe the SPR22 and Trapdoor actions are equal in strength. Fine, all Americans have a right to an opinion, even an uninformed one. I suggest to this crowd that they rebarrel a Trapdoor to 30-06 Springfield, fire it with a lanyard cord remotely and report on their results. It should be interesting.
By far the finest discussion I have found on this subject is on kifaruforums.net. It is a lengthy and extremely interesting discussion on the relevent considerations of the safe pressures for the 45-70 SPR22.
I'm so taken by the SXS Baikals that I have just ordered a IZH-94 O/U Express rifle in 30-06. I would far more preferred it in 9.3X74R, which regrettably is not imported here, although made in Russia. The day it is available, I'm the first in line, as I would be for the same caliber in the SPR22 SXS.
In my opinion and experience, well fortified by the opinions of others, the double barrel Baikals are interesting rifles, at a bargain price, generally suited for their purpose. They are not a Rigby or H&H double rifle costing 50-100 times more, or even a Heym, Blaser, Krieghoff or Merkel costing 10-12 times more, or even the lower cost Chapuis at 5-6 times more. I simply chose to have the 100 firearms $100,000 will buy me instead of one Westley Richards. To each his own.
I DO NOT ADVOCATE YOU FIRE ANY LOAD IN A RIFLE CONTRARY TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL CAUTIONS, NOR DO I RECOMMEND YOU REBARREL THE TRAPDOOR TO 30-06, AND IF YOU DO, DO NOT FIRE IT. OTHER THAN THAT, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. (And don't forget, if you rechamber the 45-70 to .458 win Mag, please report results. Heh, heh....)

Great Topic and pics. Just some more info, Remington has dropped most of there international arms. Eaa has picked up most of them including the doulbles and what was the 798's. They selling them under a sister company called US sporting goods. There are Three different grades so to speak of the doubles. The 06 and 45-70 in the cheap line. The medium grade and high grade, which has the triditional reagulation, in 375 H&H, 45-70, 416 rigby, 450NE, 470NE, 500NE, 600NE and a few other calibers. The medium has a blue reciever and the high has a silver reciever. These are all side by sides. I didn't see the o/u in the catalog. 358mt

I will admit that my sample size of 1 is not large enough to be statistically representative of all IZH-94s, but it was such a POS that I felt that I needed to warn others to think x2 before spending their hard earned $$ on such a bad firearm. I'm glad that your SxS Russian doubles are working well for you and hope that they continue to do so.

Until the Russians can get a handle on the QC of their sporting firearms, I think that I'll spend my $$ elsewhere.

I am thinking of buying a Remington SPR22 double rifle but I don't know how practical it is for general purpose hunting. The game in question is wild pigs. I am buying a Savage 30-06 or 7mm also but don't know if the double rifle is worth the price due to its use as a brush or swing gun. What is the point of aim by design?

Thoughts? Perspectives?

My 45-70 shoots very well with factory Remington Xpress 405gr. bullets that are loaded to low pressures. Tried some hotter handloads and the regulation went all to hell. Other than that mine is fitted well, works good, and actually has a fine figured piece of wood in the stock. I think it's a cool rifle, just keep the pressures down in it.

Thanks for the info. What game did you use it for? How was the accuracy?

had a bad experience with a baikal o/u 20ga. bird gun. bent ejectors. first trip out, inclusive of a good spraying of remoil first. remington ammo. gave the double away. good riddance. don't have to listen to someone griping about the gun i 'traded' 'em.

$400 worth of 'experience'.

wouldn't buy a hammer made by 'baikal'. ever.

As it written before they are utilitarian doubles but for the price you can spend some money to improve a bit the fitting.
About russian QC (i'm not from Russia, it seems to me, reading post on this fantastic forum, that Remington, Marlin and even Kimber (i own some) have also very big QC problems today. Not my saying but of lot of campers...

Good Thanksgiving to you
