I was at the local gun shop the other day, and noticed two new M70 Extreme weathers on the rack. One in 30-06, one 270. I handled the 30-06 first. Machining seemed very good, stock felt clubby w/ a 22" barrel, but stiff atleast, 24" would be better. The thing that jumped out at me was that the floorplate basically wouldnt latch. The floorplate would make contact with the stock, before the plunger in the trigger guard could notch the floorplate. The 270 I hanlded was better but the plunger still couldnt fully engage the floorplate.

I told the salesman and he removed the 30-06 from the rack. This was dis-heartening considering the quality of the fwt's Ive handled. The Fwt's seemed to be above that of other rifles in their price range. Guess I'm glad I got one when I did, and hope the quality isnt on the decline already.

Workers that would allow that rifle to ship knowing it wasn't functiioning properly should get a serious talking to, at the minimum.

I looked at one last week. Its a nice rifle but, whats up with the stock? It feels like a big heavy club!

i handled one saturday, in 30-06. the barrel was free floating, bolt travel was quite smooth, and i like the way the b&c stock fit me. the price was 9 something. as soon as i saw the 9 i lost interest. i'm still waiting for my dealer to get in a super grade in 270 win. had him check and his supplier showed none available as yet.

I am also waiting for the new supergrades.

I really like the Fwt Deluxe's, just have to pass on the EW's.

I agree, this might be the worst feeling stock I've ever handled on a sporter rifle....................547.

I have the EW and the unloading gate works just fine did you try the 270 did it work ok?

I'm gonna pick one up in 243 Win as soon as they are available and ditch the stock, as those stocks suck indeed. I got a compact edge sitting here waiting to be used.

Maybe they hired some New Haven guys . All kidding aside the new 70's I have seen have been very well made and appear to be very consistent in quality. I can't say that for the last 2 years of New Haven production.

I just ordered one from the local dealer today in 300WSM.He called his distributor while I was there and while he had none he expected them shortly.I was positive I was going to get a 270 but since I already have one in the Featherweight I figured I'd go with the 300. Does everyone that's seen one feel negative about the stock? If so, who makes a good synthetic with a cheekpiece?

from what i have read, the new ew m70 wears a b&c stock. nothing wrong with that stock. some on this site like micky's, some like h.s., some like brown, etc. it's a ford vs chevy thing. if a fellow wants a different stock, there are many others out there that would work. however, i'm somewhat certain that the majority of folks who buy an ew m70 will leave it in the stock it came with (perhaps not for some who post here but remember we are a miniscule bunch as compared to the buying public). since it will be YOUR rifle, try it out and see if YOU like it. if YOU do, fine. if YOU don't, you can always find a different stock. don't get caught up in letting someone else decide what's best for YOU.

An M70 .308 Win EW in a featherweight pattern edge, that'd be nice an "extreme weather featherweight".
