What is the max OAL that a short action Ruger Model 77 magazine will accept?

In Remingtons it's 2.82" +- and in a .308 you can't hardly get closer than about .1" to the lands with most bullets and still fit in the mag.
My 260 metal looks like 2.890 this is measured from the bottom.

Hope that helps...
It helps greatly, thanks!
The max magazine length for my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier MK2 is 2.900"...However, I generally never exceed 2.885" COAL for magazine loadings.
My old M77 tang safety was approx 2.870". You can have it lengthened if you care to part with the dough. I had all my three tang safety rifles lengthened. The new mag length is 3.1" far more useful.
Thanks again.

Reason for asking is that Ruger now makes a short action in left hand. That's making my credit card twitch for a .308 or maybe 7mm-08, but since I'm all set up for .308 and have lots of Hornady 150's on hand that's how I'm leaning.

Prior experience with .308's leads me to believe they are all throated long to accomodate 7.62 Nato ammo but have short magazines.

I know that .308's still shoot well in spite of this but the thought of it makes my looney throat tighten up, raises my blood pressure and causes occasional irregularity to boot. So the closer to the lands one can seat a bullet and still fit the magazine the better it is for my health.
Jim,

I just bought a left handed Ruger Hawkeye in .308Win, picked it up yesterday as matter of fact. I don't have precision equipement to measure the mag length. I nnly got a lowly ruler or tape measure that I could try to measure the bottom of the mag box if that would help?

Sure thing - the more info the better!

BTW, I'd be real interested in hearing how yours shoots, functions etc.
i dont know that i ever measured a box on a ruger but i know my 2.83 match loads fit.
jim,

about 2 7/8" with tape measure.

no problem. I let you know how she shoots and functions. btw, the rings that come w/ the ruger, the 4bhm and 5bhm, do you know which goes on the front vs back of the reciever? It looks like the 4's go in front and 5hbm go on the back looking at the diagram/drawing.

The box on my 260 is a touch under 2.9. However, I can't seat my bullets (Speer 120) out much past 2.8. I'd like to seat them farther out and use that space in the mag box, but it shoots well enough I'm happy with it. I was really surprised that the throat wasn't way out there.
Leomort, how are you liking that .308?

How was the trigger, function, etc.?

What kind of accuracy results are you getting?

And finally, can you seat a typical .308 bullet to hit the lands and still fit in the magazine?
