Between the 300 win mag and a 300 ultra mag? How do they compare ballistics speaking?

I'd say in a typical hunting rifle with typical hunting bullets, there is no signifigant difference between the two, you can throw the 300 weatherby in the mix as well.

But if you are building a rifle to fire the heavy vld bullets with a long barrel, the 300 ultra's larger case is worth it.

It just comes down to the application.

About 200 fps in my rifles,which to me means very little if anything.My top two hunting rifles are my rem 700 xcr 300 ultra and my tikka 695 stainless 300 win mag. I am carrying the 300 win mag this year since it's a touch more accurate for me.

I sold my lovely model 70 Classic 300RUM, after shooting many head of big game with it, because it really does not appreciably outperform a 300WBY and made too much noise for me (No, it did not have a muzzle brake on it - hate 'em) A 300 Win can get close enough as well, in real world terms, and I am a total velocity whore. With a 168 TTSX at 3300 or so, not much you cant do with that combo should be attempted with ANY 30 cal. If we need more, we need a 338 or better yet a 375-416 of some flavor.

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

In a 700,I'd much prefer the 300Winny,due to COAL latitude......................

Thanks for your replys. My main reason for asking is I hear so many of my friends say the 300 ultra is the best elk rifle blah blah blah. I am sure it is very capable, along with about 10 others of killing elk. I shot my elk this year with my Stevens 7mm mag at just over 600yds. Across a canyon. It was a one kill shot. I don't make a habit of shooting this far, and probably never will again. I just wondered what all the hub-bub was about the 300 ultra.

I'd love to see the 300Ultra necked to 7mm and wearing a 2.5" hull,so as to compliment 700 COAL constraints.................

Nuthin wrong with the 7mm RUM as it is, the way I see it. Nor the 7STW, but I am still stuck in the stone age regarding light bullets going really fast and I am finding that those bullets, if a TSX or TTSX can be seated really deeply and still shoot great. Call it a charachter flaw I guess.

Regarding shooting an Elk or whatever way out there. Make holes in an animals lungs and or heart of reasonable diameter and it will soon die. No voodoo or pixie dust is required.

I shot a jazillion 120's out of my STW's and never had one not stick in somethin'. In fact,I love the 120X like few other projectiles on the Planet...but throat/mag geometry is never a bad thing.

I'd rather shoot something in the ass,than the heart,because it will involve less footsteps via the victim,after the fact. I'm a dies in the wool bone breaker and am not of the mind to bleed things out and traipse about in pursuit of same.

The minimal performance loss by the decrease in case length,would pay some real dividends in Precision,which would translate rather handily downrange. No need to increase the throat length,but by simply having the mag confines to kiss a myriad of projectiles,for applications geared towards pursuits of interest...would bear much in the way of fruit.

Tough not to swoon the wayward "THUNK" of a 162 arriving the scene and bolstering the inherent Precision of the platform is hardly a concession.

I like the ultra case because it does not have a belt, besides you don't have to load the ultra full house anyways. did any other companies besides remington chamber the 7mm RUM???

If starting from scratch and wanting a long range boomer going straight to a Wby or Rum .30 might make sense. If one already had a .300 Win though I'm not so sure it'd honestly be worth another rifle. Yes there's a performance increase but in practical field use I'm not sure how great the advantage would really be.

Like you I had a 7Mag and fancied the idea of something with a bit more to it. Like Safariman alluded to earlier I just didn't see a real great advantage to the .30's over the big 7 and went to the .338. (actually a .340 Wby) It's like if I had started with a .270 I'd have skipped the 7mm and maybe gone to one of the big .30's.

OTOH, never let it be said is discouraged somebody buying a new rifle.

7mm mannerisms allow it to dazzle,less much of the baggage associated with stuff greater in diameter.

I wish I had a nickle for every time someone blew their own mind,shooting one of my 7-08's. That in itself has surely inspired a few hundered Custom builds..................
