Guys, I'm looking at one of these rifles. Its new, unfired, no box, dark wood in excellent condition (99%). It looks like it has a 24" barrel and I'm being told its a fairly rare peice. Guy wants $750.00. Anyone have opinions or info?

I was never a fan of the Detachable magazines and no one liking them may be the reason it is rare. The magazine tended to get lost while hunting.

I had one and my son took it. It's not fussy and shoots about anything well and the stuff it likes shoots great. I never cared for the DM but we have never lost a magazine. It's a solid rifle that has killed a bunch of critters.

i have a short action in 7-08 with a standard sporter weight barrel, that used to be a 260 mr.
mags can be fussy with feeding if the mag doesn't sit high enough.

my fault tho, as i changed the stock to a home altered sps stock.

it shoots great, and reloads faster than a bdl/adl type rifle, as all you do is pull the empty mag out and put a spare back in.
lost mags, not by falling out of the rifle.
a boneheaded moment maybe, if you drop it, or lose it out of your pocket.

750.00 ? rare ?

I wouldn't call it rare, nor would I pay $750 for it. I have a 700 BDL DM .280, and it's my best shooting rifle. Shop around, I have seen some around $550-$600 on gunbroker before.

My BDL DM .280 (with HS Precision stock) shoots just about any bullet well. The mountain rifle has a slimmer barrel and is 22" I think.

Not buying a rifle for fear of losing a detachable magazine is a silly point in my opinion. If that was the case, none of us would ever buy a rimfire.

That's a lot of money for that gun IMO. I'd consider 100 less. I had a .280 in the same gun you're looking at. It was a nice rifle.

I'm not the norm here, but I like the mag.s for them.

Mine shot like you'd expect for a thin whippy bbl. I got 1 1/4" at 100 with Fed blue box 140 gr, and 2" with Core lokt 150 grain.

My first thoughts were that it's likely a 22" tube, not 24.

I'd ask myself how bad I wanted a 280 in that configuration.
If you decide you don't like the DM, there isn't much you can do about it.

Well, in the rifle world, 280s are relatively rare, and so are mountain rifles..so the combination must be! I see them around, mostly in .270, 30-06 and 25-06. I see short actions mostly in 7mm-08.

I have that rifle in a slightly more rare (less popular?)caliber, .260 Remington, and it's a shooter, especially considering the very thin barrel. It has the wood stock that looks like the CDL stock with a more slender forend. Magazines are harder to find for the short action, for some reason, but they don't tend to fall out at all. In fact, you really have to want it out to make the thing come out. I paid just a tad under $500 for it, used, a few years ago.

I don't think you'll be sorry you bought it in a .280, but you ought to buy it closer to $600 than $750, in my opinion. And before you do, check out the price of a new one. After all, the 700 CDL still can be had for less than $1000, I think.

I think Remington is dropping (or has dropped)the DM because most of the parts are on clearance right now.

H-S did the DM right.

Mine in a BDL DM took to throwing rounds out the port instead of chambering. Had to go the Kwik Klip route -- already bedded it and it was a shooter, but didn't want to add 1/2 the price of a rifle to do a HS Precision bottom metal fix.

Guys, thanks for the input. I bought the rifle this evening for $675.00 which, based upon the feedback here seems like a good deal. She sure is a pretty thang!

i saw a .270 for 499. i do like my 30-06 mtn. paid 350

Ronin, I hear ya but they aint 280's and to me the 280 has to be one of the most under rated rounds available. I'm happy.

That's all that matters.
