Does the 24" barrel lose a lot of velocity vs. the MKV 26"- enough that the effort really isn't worth it over a 24" .25-06? I'd only be using bullets 110 grains and over.
Thank you in advance.
a 24inch .257wby and a 24 inch .25-06 side by side the .25-06 will getits A$$ kicked all day long. the .257wby is around 200 fps faster than the .25-06 in all bullet weights.
Indeed one cannot give up 10 grains of powder and expect parity at the same pressures. The question I asked is how much and is the extra 2" of the 26" bbl worth it? Is your figure of 200 fps in a 24" barrel for the .257 WBY" If the difference in arse kicking is really more like 120 fps 24" bbl to 24" bbl the extra powder use and shorter barrel life become less attractive and much less "worth it".
The 257 Vanguard I had shot 100s at 3500 FPS.
I wasn't able to outdo the .25-06 by very much with the .257 WM Vanguard I had. I chrono'd 120 grain loads and while I don't remember the numbers it convinced me that the .257 Roy is inefficient in a 24" barrel.
I have several quarter-bores in barrel lengths from 20-inchs (250 Sav), 22", 24", 25", and my 257 Wby has a 26" barrel. I don't want a 257 Wby with less than a 26" barrel.
To me, putting a shorter barrel on a 257 Wby is like putting a two-barrel carburetor on your 396 engine, with straight pipes. You will make more noise but your quarter-mile times will suffer.
If a 24" barrel is necessary I find the 25-06 to be more civilized and more satisfying, for a hunting rifle.
My Vanguard has a 24" barrel and I am running 3600 fps with 100gr. TSX's...........Just shot an antelope with it at 602 lasered yards. Hard to believe 2" is really going to do that much for me? YMMV
A 24 inch .257 WBY is still faster than your 26 inch 25-06.
I'm getting 3,623fps out of my Vanguard Sub MOA with 100gr TSX and RL22!
I have a .257 Roberts, and a .25-06 22" and 24" bbls respectively they each have their niche. I'm a .25 caliber junkie. The reason for a .257 WBY would be to launch 115 gr. Berger VLDs at open country deer and antelope. There are 3 options a Vanguard with 24" tube, a MkV with 26" tube or the really costly option a custom. Just trying to see if there is a meaningful gain with 110 AB's or 115 Bergers at 24".
i'm running almost 3800 fps out of my 24" vanguard with 100 grain tsx's.
ain't NO 25-06 gonna even come close to that !
My 26" 25-06 pushes 100NBT's at 3375fps
My 24" .257Roy pushes 100SSII's at 3600fps
critters hate 'em both...
I have both a MK 5 26" barrel and a new Vanguard 24" barrel over my chrony with the same load there is about 50fps difference. which is a lot less than i thought there would be.

to me the vanguard is like buying a chevy and putting a caddy grille or rims on it kinda silly I have both the 257 wby and the 25.06 I wish I Would have stuck out the 25.06 I can get 3450 with 100 gr pills in my 24" 25.06
Grumpy that's exactly the info I needed to know. Thank you all for your comments.
