Pardon my ignorance, but how does one go about building a Faux Ti? I don't have a clue where to start, other than I believe I start with an M700. Thanks in advance.
Yep, SUCKS action, MR contour tube, Ti take off (or new) stock, then you can have the shifter hollowed out and spiral flute the bolt.
My ignorance is relatively deep on the subject, but I just acquired a Ti take-off stock and stuck a regular Rem. 700 in it...about as Faux as you can get!
Nary a hint of titanium anywhere!

Krapp! forgot about spiral fluting the bolt.....

That means you Faux'ed it Up...
I Sho' did Maux Faux!

LSS Mtn rifle in caliber of choice + Ti take off + Kampfeld fluted bolt = Faux Ti. Or try and find a used Gander Mtn Guide rifle and just flute and your 99% there.
pardon my ignorance... what's a ti take off? is it a stock that came off of a ti or can you buy one from somewhere and that's just the name of them?
thanks
Brett (Mac)
A take off stock from a Ti and yes you can purchase them also. They are a Bell & Carlson stock.
thanks appreciate it.

The more I see that the more I like the straight black stocks over the ones with web. But I could go for both.

Faux'kin A... good looking rifle.
Bedding a LA Ti stock as we speak... stainless .25-06 will ride it for a while.
Ingwe,
Who makes those rings ?
I beleive they are Remington faux Talleys. It's a faux-up all right..

And they are better looking than the Talleys..
Good looking rig for a faux shooter.
Looks like a gash maker mount job on the scope?? <grin>

Those are Remmy Faux Talleys...they are the best in the WORLD....
After that last crack, I'm putting Steelie on Ignore..until 10;15 am..
Thatll show him.....

Sharp eye chrome, I like those rings! Not really a faux ti but I'm gonna see how a CDL Whelen does in a first gen. ti stock, should be lively....
Well . . . sorta. I believe that the desired model for a Faux Ti is the Mountain Rifle stock (2950 series). At least that's what I used on my first Faux Ti .280
Wow, great info!! And just in time for Christmas!!!

Ingwe,
That really is a nice rifle. The more I see it, the more I like it.
Good job on putting it together!

Faux Shaux... Bet that rifle'll buck a bit.
My Faux Ti came that way from the factory - Rem 700 Mountain Guide special edition run for Gander Mountain.
It'll do this with the Campfire load of 44.0 RL15 and the 120 TSX...
I have the Whelen in a first generation TI stock with Talley lightweights and Leupold 2.5-8x36. It is a "bit of a hanfull", but will shoot into an inch if I do my part. Lead sled is nice for load work up!
I've posted this one before - also started as a Gander Mtn Guide rifle, now a faux 243. Shoots 95 grain Fusion ammo in nice lttle groups. I like it a lot.
Mine is a long action 257 Roberts .....
It shoots too.
Next one (in the works) will be a 223 or 223AI.

Great minds....

I'm thinking Cub has sense enough to go with a 1-8" twist, unlike some others I know but won't mention by name.

Love the Faux Ti. Mine's just a take off with X Mark trigger and a standard '06 action and barrel bedded with a FXII6x36 in talley lightweights. Great feeling/carrying rifle.
These Ti stocks are so much better than the standard synthetic factory stocks i'm used to.
Ti over tupperware anyday.
+1...the guys on the 'fire turned me on to Ti...
thanks for that!

I believe bonus points are awarded for color and an 8 twist.....

Gonna be 1:9". Just shootin deer bullets.

Jiminy Christmas! I have a M700 CDL 280 Remington with 24 inch tube... the stock is too pretty to bang up in the woods (altho I already have), and I just feel the need to swap out that stock for something lighter and more durable... The rifle is currently sporting a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 in talley ltwt rings... comes a little under 8 lbs at the moment, with sling... So... I need to sort out the stock as the first order of bidness... I guess just do a websearch on the Bell and Carlson website? Or keep an eye on the classifieds? thanks
Dogger,
Don't feel like you have to flute the bolt or hollow the bolt handle for a faux Ti build - that's not going to save you much weight, and IMHO if you are going to spend the money to flute the bolt and hollow the bolt handle, you might as well save a little more money and buy a used Ti to have an even lighter rifle.
I think the reason Remington chose to flute the bolt on the Titanium was more to reduce surface area so the bolt was easier to move (a little smoother working) than to reduce weight. In my experience, the Remington stainless or chrome-moly actions are smoother than the Titanium actions.
Dogger,
From what I've read, I expect that you would have to open up the barrel channel of a Ti stock for it to fit on a CDL barreled action because the Ti stocks are made for the mountain rifle contour barrel. You might keep an eye on the Classifieds for one that someone had already opened up for a sporter-weight barrel.
Here's mine. A .260Rem Mountain rifle in a Ti take off with Talleys and Leupold VXII 2-7x33.
Do the Bell and Carlson stocks #2461-22 and #2462-22 pass the Campfire cut for such a Faux Ti?
I just weighed by M700 CDL 280 with Zeiss 3-9x40 (without ammo and sling) and it is 7lb 14oz. The Ruger M77 300RSAUM w/ Vortex Viper 3-9x40 tips the scales at 8lb 7oz. There has to be an inexpensive way to "faux" these hogs to push down the weight. Gad.
Dang! Like a fart in church I must have killed the discussion!!
Mines in a 2951
Here is mine. Ditched the SPS stock for an Alaskan from Stocky's. Next the bolt goes off to Kampfeld, have someone bed it, call it good.
OK Guys,
Answer me this, why has everybody gone too mix & not match ? You've got a stainless rifle with black bases/rings with a black scope. What's the deal ?? It's 4:55 AM and I'm not thinking straight. First cup of coffee.
30-06 Mountain Rifle 22" Barrel.
Ken
Deer don't see the black scope as well. They think the rifle is open sighted so they aren't as wary.
Bruce
Exactamundo...
Thought everyone knew that.....sheesh...
Ingwe
Cause I think the matte scope/rings/stock match up well and look good and have yet to see a stainless barrel/rings/scope match up at all. Always, from what I've seen, different shades and doesn't look right. Just me though...
