CLB: And the tang safety part of your inquiry is referring to the older style push pull safety that was built into the "tang" of the older Model 77 actions. This safety was similar to a shotgun safety like which was prevelent on double barrel shotguns.
The Model 77's for some time now have all had swing wing type safety levers mounted in the bolt shroud.
I am not sure WHEN the Ruger folks started "engraving" their "safety warnings" on the Model 77's barrels - I am guessing about 1979 - 1980 maybe a little later.
It would be interesting to know the particular YEAR they began engraving the warning on the barrel. I hope someone can post that.
I just went down to my gun vault and checked my "200th Year Of Liberty" (made in 1976) Ruger Model 77 and it has NO warning on its barrel.
Maybe I could "google" this question?

I believe all the pre-warning rifles locked the bolt down when on safe and that this was changed when the warnings arrived. Anybody confirm that?

The bolt lock change was implemented in the mid 1980's, IIRC.

Yeah -- a couple of my 77's have locking tang safeties with statements on the barrel. I like the locking versions, FWIW.

I bought a new off the shelf M77 in around '88. The tang safety did lock down the bolt on that rifle. Don't know for sure how long that rifle was on the shelf though.

And it did have the rather lengthy statement on the barrel about reading the safety manual.

Personally, I think Ruger missed the boat on the MK II by going to the little bitty wing instead of improving the tang safety to a 3 position. Or for that matter just leaving the tang safety as it was.

Ditto that- I hate wing safeties. They are never convenient to use with the hand that can reach then and in the case of the mod 70, are prone to moving when carrying slung. I love the safety on my Sakos.

FWIW, As other campers have discussed there was a recall of tang safety 77 Ruger's. Those that were sent back to the factory due to recall and those made after recall will have a capital T and a punch mark on the bottom of bolt handle. If you really want a great trigger pull on these rifles, put a Basix sear and lighter trigger spring in your 77. Erniethegunsmith.com carries the sear and spring. If ernie does not have the basix sear, thegunsource.com should or just go to riflebasix.com. I've got one of these in .35 Whelen. Installation is not difficult and you can get step by step instructions from www.riflebasix.com. The basix sear and trigger spring really makes for one sweet shooting rifle for around $40.00.
