Since I can't remember ever seeing a Sako pic thread I thought I would start one... grin

My first Sako. I had always heard about .5 inch rifles but had never owned one until I bought this one. Sako 75 in 300 RUM with 4.5x14x40. When it was new it would average in .3's with 180 grain partition. I hope my children give this gun to their children.
[img:center]http://[Linked Image][/img]

After owning the 300 RUM I have been on the downhill slide ever since...grin.

New addition. Sako 85 260 REM with Leupold 2x7x33.

Posted By: MightyPeace Re: Sako Pic thread.... - 03/16/11
Great topic and pics guys.

My first ever new rifle ordered in 1997 - Sako m75ss 300WM with Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 scope and the factory barrel fluted and telfon coated the flutes and polished the rest of the barrel by my gusmith. Shoots 180gr Accubond reloads under 0.4" groups with RL-22.
[Linked Image]

Then the rifle bug bit in 2005. Bought a few Tikka T3 270WSM's-the Sako m75 Greywolf wasnot out yet. In May of 2006, bought a Sako m75ss 243 and mounted a VX2 4-12x40 LRD scope. Used the excuse for a predator rifle that our yet born child (happened to be a boy born 1 month later) would need a rifle. wink
[Linked Image]

In 2007, a Sako m75 Greywolf 300WSM with a Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 BC reticle.
[Linked Image]

In March 2008, a used mint Sako m75ss 22-250 (for my other newborn boy the month prior). Placed a eupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x40AO scope that was a safe queen for a long time.
I see I have no pics of this one. Oh well looks like my 300WM and 243. I prefer the grey stock with black rubber inlays.

In June 2008 I bought a new Sako m75 Greywolf 25-06, replaced the barrel and some other work. Built a 338-06 Ackley Improved. Has a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 scope with the new Sako Optilock Ringmounts.

In the future I want to buy a Sako m75ss or Greywolf 270WSM. If in the ss model I may replace the stock with a MacMillan I have already picked out (middle one).
[img]http://i52.tinypic.com/2cpaoso.jpg[/img]

I also want to do another project rifle off a Sako m75 rifle...a 330 Dakota has me interested, maybe a 280AI.

BT53,
How does your custom 358 shoot? A friend of mine has a
rebarreled 579 in 358 that he had done back in the 90s
and it shoots ok, but not a tack driver. I still want to
buy it from him when and if he decides to get rid of it.

It's not a target rifle. It was designed to kill elk .... but it does group 225gr Sierra boat tails very well. The Nosler 225gr partition is my go-to hunting bullet, however and it'll usually stay in 1.5" or so @ 100. It's a great rifle to carry and use!

I imagine with a little work, your friends Sako could be made to shoot quite well. I fell in love with the darned things the first time I read an article by John Wooters.....

Diggin' the Sako pics fellas, and have been lusting after a grey laminate stainless for a while. Do you guys prefer the 75 or 85 and why? Thanks.
Posted By: Oldquailhunter Re: Sako Pic thread.... - 03/18/11
I like the 75's stock better than I do the 85's stock. The 75's in general will weigh more (sometimes alot more) than the same model 85.

Some of my 75's have taken some time to make the magic .5 (3 shots) group but all of my 85's have done it in less than three loads. Maybe I have just been lucky with the 85's.

The 85's also have different mag release and there is no way to accidently hit it and loose a mag. Saying that I have never lost one with a 75 though.

In my opinion it matters not really. If your looking for a lighter rifle go with the 85 if you don't mind a heavier rifle go with the 75.

Posted By: Hook Re: Sako Pic thread.... - 03/28/11
My only Sako....not a collector or showpiece like a lot shown here, but with a good story nevertheless. Several years ago, I was asked to liquidate the firearms portion of a passed acquaintances estate. The items had been piled in the basement of an unoccupied (and unheated or cooled) house for close to 20 years. Included in the three (3) pickup loads of gun stuff of every type and description was an L-46 Sako barreled action. The barrel and stripped action were the only two parts still attached together, everything else was scattered around mixed in boxes with other parts.

Luckily, all metal parts except the bracket that screwed to the bottom of the action that held the magazine in place was found. The barrel and action had fingernail sized rust blisters is several places. The bbl was stamped 222 Rem but had been reamed to 223 Rem. A 222 mag as well as a 222 Rem Magnum mag were found in the boxes. No factory stock was found, but there was an unfinished after market stock roughly inletted for this action there.

I can only assumed the old gent planned to restock the bbled action and use the 222 RM magazine for 223 rounds. As I had zero luck finding the missing bracket or locating a new one, I just cleaned everything up, converted the stock to a single shot setup, and put the little jewel together. It would have taken much more time, dollars, and effort than I was interested in spending on it to bring it back to original condition, so I now have a very neat, attractive (from a distance), tack driver.

It shoots itty bitty groups with just about any 223 load with 55 grainers or smaller. Unfortunately, the really slow twist on the old L 46 bbls would not stabilize heavy or long bullets. I tried 53 gr TSXs but they would barely hit a 10" bulleye at 25 yds. So now I just stick with 55 gr Hornady SPs that routinely go under 0.5. All in all, I am very tickled with my little reclamation project.

And 45gr tsx's do not bad either....

Hmmmmm....maybe I should try some 45 gr TSXs. They seem to work fairly well on Kodiak's little BC deer. I suppose they'll work on a monster AL doe.....

KH, is yours a 223 Rem and do you know the rifling twist?
Posted By: EricM Re: Sako Pic thread.... - 03/28/11
KodiakHntr,

I love how you're using a wood stocked and blued rifle in heavy snow!

Hells yeah!!
Posted By: KodiakHntr Re: Sako Pic thread.... - 03/28/11
223AI to be exact.....Haven't measured the twist myself, but seeing as it won't do all that terribly well with the 53's, I'm guessing fairly slow.....

Suppose I should break down and actually measure it. Definately no quicker than 1 in 12 at any rate.

Don't get me wrong, it shot the 53's, but wouldn't go sub-moa with them....The 45's go way sub-moa....Same as the 40gr vmax.

Well, it is an awfully pretty rifle....And it shoots like it has eyes, so it seems a shame to not take it out when it wants to go....grin (It has tipped over an awful lot of coyotes in the last couple of winters....The only reason that one got a picture was because I was fair happy with the shot - 260+ yards, shot after I'd stood up and he busted me and started to run across the bowl....)

And to be honest, we don't get a lot of moisture in our snow up here......
