For those of you that have a 300 Win mag what length is the barrel on your gun ?
Have a Model 70 Classic with a 24" tube. Always thought that was about right.
Thats what I'm thinking I won a remington XCR and it has a 26 inch so I'm goin to cut 2 inches off and get a diffent stock for it
Yup! Thats what I would do. It's surprising how much handier that 2" makes a rifle feel! The gain in ergonomics FAR out weighs the lost fps in my opinion!

A Bolt and Model 70... both at 26 inches...

I've had 24 and 26 inch tubes. I kinda preferred the 26 inch ones, being the rifle was a .300 WinMag and I was chasing velocity.

It never did anything the 24s wouldn't do. Velocities between the two lengths were always "in the neighborhood".

It basically came down to configuring the rifle the way I wanted it. I think that if you want a 24" tube, that's what you should do. If you are happy and confident with a rifle, then that means more than a theoretical 50 or so fps.
24" has always worked great for me....
I had a Krieger on my old 700 for a time that was cut to 23". Wish I still had the barrel to measure it cause for me it was about perfection for balance.

Have 23" on my 300 WSM today and it's a rock star as well.

For me, it's all about how it feels and balances and I need to take into account the weight of the action, stock, the size of the hole in the tube and then length of tube to get it right.

25" is perfect for a 300wm!
I've had .300 Winchester Magnums with 22", 24", 25" and 26" barrels, but oddly enough not a 23" barrel. (I say oddly, because several of my other rifles have had 23-inchers.) They all killed stuff, and even the 22" barrel was capable of 3000 fps with 180-grain bullets using published data, which has always seemed to me to be the threshold of .300 magnum performance.

OUCH....You like them long. I'm still trying to get used to the 26" barrel on my new 7mm rem mag... blush I was working on it lastnight and didn't hit it on anything like I did the other day whistle.

I'm one that thinks the 300 WM needs a 24" barrel at a minimum.
Anyone can have a thirty caliber magnum with a carbine barrel. It'll be louder than with a longer barrel and loss 25-30 fps per inch shorter...

So go from 26" too 20" and you'll lose 150 plus fps... And be louder. But maybe not muzzle break louder.

If your shooting out past 300 yards then your trajectory will be altered due to the lower velocities. Inside 250 yards there are not any real issues.

So if your after critters at 400 yards then a 20" 300 Weatherby mat not be your prefered choice

shocked Wooo dangit, I once help a kid zero a 20" barreled '06, that sombuck was loud and obnoxious, I couldn't imagine pulling the trigger on a 20" 300 WBY.

Gunner
I bet someone has done it, but not this kid....
I've got a 26" on one and a 27" on another. I've also got a .300 Weatherby with a 24" pipe.

The 27" Winnie and its current load (200 grain Accubond)matches the velocity of the Weatherby with 180s, and does it with 8 grains less of the same powder.
Stop playing with excessive recoil? Try stalking closer...

The 30/06 the top level of recoil is about what people can take and still shoot straight.
My Browning X Bolt Stainless Stalker has a 26" Barrel. Sometimes when hunting in the mountains and woods, it would be nice if it was a couple of inches shorter, but the rifle is so light weight and balanced, I wouldn't change anything.

M70 RUM 26"
M70 WM 26"
M70 WSM 24"
M700 RSAUM 24"
M700 H&H 24"
M700 Weatherby no idea crazy it is a bone stock 700 Classic, but honestly, it hasn't been out of the safe for 15 years, except to wipe down with an oily rag.
I like them at 26". I've hunted a lot of places where the brush, foliage, etc, was thick as [bleep] and never had a problem. My 300 RUM and 358 Norma Mag have 26" barrels for example and, if I was to buy another 300 Winnie, it would probably have the same barrel length.
I only have one in Ruger form with a 24" barrel....If velocity is a concern then a longer barrel fits the 300 but 24" seems to work just fine and I like 24" as I have several in that length.

In the end,a few fps means nuttin if you know you rifle but it sounds kool on the net!

Jayco
My 300 win mags have always had 24" tubes
I have had 300 ultras with 24" and 26" tubes, but run nothing but 24 tubes now."

I run mine at 22". Optimum for balance and handling. Still get the 180's out at 3000. No downside at all.

R.
I split the difference and put a 25" on mine just to be different. I am sure a 24" would work just fine, certainly handier than a 26". Don't think I would go shorter than 24" on 300 mag.

25" Krieger bull on my Coues outfit.

But, 24" is about right for a carrying .300 Winny.
Both mine a 700 BDL ss and a M70PF in 300 Win Mag 24"s period. Magnum Man
I have a m70 with a custom barrel and 25''.
Timber rifle has a 20" open country a 24" If i rebarrel the open country will get a 27"-28"
