What is your caliber and gun of choice for speed goats.
6mm-06. Gonna try some 85 grain TTSXs this year, if I draw a tag.
.270 is my fav
One antelope trip to my credit. We all used 25/06 rifles of one sort or another. Can't see much way to improve upon what we accomplished and I'd be inclined to carry the same rifle again if the opportunity arises.
I have used both a .30-06 and 6mmRem. Next time out will either be 6.5-06AI w/123 Scenar or 6mmAI with the 85 TTSX same as Mudhen!
Same gun for everything else, 30-06. smile
Current fave.....223AI grin

I only hunted antelope once and took my 300 RUM was expecting a long shot but 1 hour into the hunt I got a nice one at less than 100 yards. hope to do a mule deer/antelope hunt this year in Wyoming and will probably use the 300 RUM again

There's only one choice, IMO- after many years, and dozens of antelope, the .257 Wby is king.

Whatever happens to be my elk rifle for a given year.

Variously have been 338 WM, 300 WSM, 308 Win, 30-06 and 270.

My first antelope was taken with the 270 and that's probably my favorite because of it.
.257 Roberts
mini 270.
25
I have only shot one and that was with a 7mm mag...just because thats what I had at the time...next time it will be a 30-06 cause thats what i have now.
40 cal. Lol. I dispatched one with my duty weapon once. But if I was going on a hunt the 257 Roberts would get the nod.
Only been on one goat hunt, used the 257 wby and it worked. My shooting (or zeroing) was a little off, but it worked well.
Off the top of my head, my wife Eileen and I have taken pronghorns with the .220 Swift, .243 Winchester, .240 Weatherby, .250 Savage, .257 Roberts, .25-06 Remington, .257 Weatherby, 6.5x55, 6.5-06, .270 Winchester, 7x57, .280 Ackley Improved, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm STW, .30-06 and .300 WSM. They all worked, but the longest shots were made with the .257 Roberts, 6.5x55, .257 Weatherby, 7x57 and .280 Ackley Improved. All of those were 350-450 yards, and neither of us have ever tried any longer shots on unwounded antelope.

Eileen's favorite pronghorn round is probably the .257 Roberts. Mine is the rifle of the moment. Neither of us have shot one at much over 300 yards for a number of years.
I have shot them with

22-250
250 Savage
257 Roberts
25-06
270(?)
300 WSM
300 Win Mag

Looks like the 25's have it, current favorite antelope rifle is my 84M in 257 Roberts. I can't see improving on that much at all.
.257 Weatherby

That's a lot of dead lopes laugh

Aside, a lot of folks "think" they hate antelope... not sure why exactly, but I think they might be among my favorite eating game animal...
My furthest lope... 1 shot with a 300 WSM and 180 Partition at 547 yards... yeah I guess I'm bragging laugh

My son with his first BG animal... 223 and 53 TSX... 1-shot, 225 yards:

My favorite is probably a 25-06. I've also killed them with:
243 Win, 6mm Remington, 240 Wby, 25-06 AI, 257 Roberts, 270 Win, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 308 Win, 30-06, 300 Win Mag; and a 357 revolver.
.25-06 is my favourite, the rest were shot with .308 which actually worked just as well.
Dang so you all hunt Goats to!! grin.
240 Wby Mag, 25-06, 270 Win. 25-06 is the classic cartridge for antelope....
Mine so far have all been with my .25-06; 100 gr Hornady Interlock. 150ish-350ish yards.
I thought it was a law that speed goats had to be shot with a .25 caliber of some type.
Brad,

Yeah, we've shot a few pronghorns here and there. Some of the rounds on the list have accounted for, uh, several.

I dunno why so many people "think" they don't like antelope meat, but am convinced there's something that doesn't agree with certain taste-buds. I've seen a bunch of different people eating the same pronghorn steaks at a cok-out, and once in a while one person just didn't like it, even when everybody else did. One of my good friends says that even supposedly great pronghorn meat "tastes like dogfood" to him. (Of course, I've been tempted to ask how he knows what dogfood tastes like, but....)

Great photo of your boy! He looks a lot like you.
My personal favorite for pronghorns is a .257 Wby mag.
264 Win mag.
No real big favs, whatever I have in my pawz at the time does just fine. And count me in the group of people who love lope meat.

Rounds I've taken them with are as follows. 17 Rem, 223, 223 Ack, 22/250, Swift, 243, 240 Page Souper Pooper, 6/06, 25/06, 257 Bee, 6.5/06, .270, 7 RM , 7 Mashburn Super, 06, 300 WM, 300 Wby, 340 Wby, 375 Wby and with my M29/44 mag.

Any of them will do just fine.

Dober
My first 'lope hunt I used a 6mm. Were I to draw a tag again, or make a road trip, I'd probably split time between my .257 Weatherby and .25-06.
Got my first with my 7mm RM. Have since used a .375 Win, .308 Win, .257 Roberts, 6.5-06AI and .280 Rem. I think a .30-06, too.

The .257 Roberts with 100g TTSX or 110g AccuBonds is my favorite.
25-06 is about the best, but a 300 WBY can really reach out.

650 yards...

Not quite as far, but just as dead...

I like hunting them and eating them. 22-250,243,6mm,257,25-06,264Mag,270 Wthby,7x57,7mm Rem Mag, 308, 30-06, 45-110 & 50-140. About 60 head so far and I am not done yet.243 to 25-06 class rifles seem just about perfect for me and that is what I have used mostly. A bacon wrapped loin stk on the grill is about as good as it gets for me. Magnum Man

257 AI

Next year I'm bringing a 7x57, 257 Roy, and 6.5x55...
270 Winchester....257 Roberts.Either one is fine. smile

Great idea, but that would put me in a boredom induced coma.
Shrapnel Now that is stupid big if no AAW crap!
Thought caliber met one so mini 270 250sav 338-378 and as backup 222rem,223impas kicker
My favorite caliber for antelope is .25, as in .257 Ackley, which is what I've used to hunt them with almost every year since 1979. Before that I used a .30-06, and a .308 Win. I've also killed them with a .22-250 and a 7 mm Rem mag.

Antelope aren't hard to kill. Just about any caliber will work just fine if you put the bullet in the right place. 300 yds is about the farthest that I've shot an antelope, and most were shot at 100-200 yds.

I too like antelope meat, and for many years when the antelope numbers in eastern Montana were higher, I'd also get a doe tag.

Favorite caliber and favorite antelope rifle: 6mm Remington Ruger #1B
Also have used 25-06, 280 Remington, & 30-06.
Looks like the 25-06 is pretty popular
.284 for me.
Only hunted antelope once, around 1990, i was ear deep in magnum mania at the time, as most young bucks are, and toted my old heavy barreled 7STW, the 140 BT's did the trick sick.

Gunner
I like 25 and 26 calibers.
I've killed them with a lot of different calibers, but a 25-06 is my go to antelope rig now. Antelope meat is a family favorite.

If I had one, I'd probably use it, too!
I've only hunted antelope once. I shot my three with a Remington Mountain Rifle (early BDL style) in 7-08 using 120 grain Ballistic Tips.

Wife shot hers using a .243.

Dad used a pair of Rugers, .250 Savage and .257 Roberts.

Bro in law used his 7 Mag on his buck (I think) and my 7-08 on his two does.

Only picture I have of the hunt uploaded to photobucket, of my wife cutting one of hers up for the cooler. Count all of us in on the group that likes the meat. I like it a lot better than our local whitetails.
[Linked Image]
caliber is .277. rifle is a wood/blue ruger mk2 in 270 win. however, i have a new m70 sg, also in 270 win, which i'll use next year.
I have only shot three with 3 different rifles. First was with a .243 Win at 410 yards, second with a .257 DGR at 265 yards and the last with a .270 Win at 215 yards. If shooting out to 400+ yards, I like the .270 best. Meat is great if animal has not been run before shooting and meat is cooled quickly. I have seen them shot at longer ranges and after running and meat was not as good.
Almost all of mine have been with a 257 Wby or a 308 Norma. I did shoot one with a 260 Rem and a 300 WSM, but the other 2 have been my preferred choice.
.338 Lapua Magnum.
270 WSM, but I say anything from 243 up to the 300 Magnums is fine... even though you don't need them unless you have a mixed tag (elk, pronghorn, mule deer, etc).
I've been lucky enough to have hunted them these last few years and have used a .280, 25-06, 7mm-08 and this year a .243.
I'm pretty sure from now on it will be a tough call between the 7mm-08 or .243 for me, both work well IMHO.

But I suppose whatever you "shoot" best should be your caliber:)

Counting coup on an antelope, now that's just cool.
270WSM in a M70 Featherweight.

Ernie
Killed them with a 270, 300WSM, 22-250, and 243. Ill use my 243 again if I get another tag.

The 243 Win 105 VLD has always worked very well.

I also like the 7mm Rem Mag.

Phil killed this buck with the 7mm and you don't see to many horseback antelope hunts.

I have even killed one with a .270 Win, but in a pistol. grin

I must say I like the .264 Win Mag right now for a no compromise do anything antelope cartridge.

I will chime in with another "Me Too".

I do think warm weather during the typical antelope hunt has more than a little to do with some peoples issues with antelope meat. A big cooler full of ice and fast quartering goes a long way.
6.5x55 sweed
If down in a headlock, I'd opt for the .264 WM. It's a Winchester M70 of 2000 vintage or so (a special run of "Westerners" of 2000) w/ a Leupold M8 8x scope. Scary accurate, though not so sporting.
Several 25-06s, a couple of 270s, 280s, 7 RM, 7 WSM, 308s, 30-06s, and several others. Pretty much the flavor of the week.
Been fortunate to have had 2 Arizona tags, filled the first with my .300 win mag at 350 yards or so. The second with a .50 TC Hawken at 60 yards. Both worked fine...
I have shot them with various .257 calibers. .25/06 is probably my favorite but this year ill use my 6x45.

243.win
Id use the rifle on the bottom, 6mm Rem.
