Wow am I gonna regret this!

Stopped at the local Store today, they had some ammo on clearance. Not a lot, just four boxes. Federal premiums in 280 remington with the TRophy bonded bullet (160 gr) for $9.99. Reminton made 7mm remington Magnum, with the 140 gr Corelokt Ultra, $12.99. Two boxes Winchester Supreme in 338 winchester, with the 230 gr failsafes, $24.99.

I got home and did a bit of comparison shopping with Midwayusa, and WOW, could I have saved some serious dollars! If only I had one of those calibers. Well, I guess I do have a 7mm, but it don't like the light bullets. If I were a dishonest man...

They also had several boxes of Nosler partitions marked down $3-4 per box and some Barnes bullets marked down about the same.
Well, no. I wouldn't hesitate if I knew somebody with the caliber, and it was a good price.
Got 2 boxes of 510 gr .458 Winmag on the shelf...for $12 a box I figured I couldn't pass them up.

You never know I, I keep a Mauser action laying around ripening next to my computer just in case I need to build something..

I bought a $6.00 box of Kynoch 9x57 ammo at a gun show in South Dakota when I had barely heard of the cartridge. That was six or seven years ago -- and now I have two Mausers in 9x57, a Husqvarna 9.3x57, and a stripped barreled action that is the beginnings of a 9x56 Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

Be a little cautious about that bargain ammo .
I've never owned a 303 savage, but I've bought 6 boxes because I know folks are always looking for some at a decent price. I have also bought and passed along some 6.5 rem mag and 350 mag before remington started making it again.

The local Galyan's has been bought by Dicks sporting goods and had a bunch of premium stuff at half price so I bought some .308 win moly coated 150 gr nosler partitions for $8.00/box. Of couse last week I went and bought a savage 99 in .308 to justify the shells:)
Good shooting,
Weagle
Hey muledeer, did you shoot any of that Kynoch stuff yet? If you haven't, be veddy, veddy careful! My 9X57 is an old fashioned light weight Mauser, and with that old Kynoch stuff it seems as dangerous at both ends!

I ordered a 9.3X 62 last summer and the dealer never came through. Now I haves dies, 400 rounds of new brass, several assorted boxes of .366 bullets, and one box of RWS factory loads. This is not a problem, it merely confirms that there is a 9.3 X 62 in my future!

The best plan is to get one of everything, then you will be bound to have matching ammo at least most of the time!
OldBadger -- haven't shot the Kynoch ammo, though I now have 11 boxes of it. I'm shooting 200 gr Hornady RN's at about 2300 fps. One of my Mausers is a 1908-vintage factory sporter, and it weighs in at about 6.5 lbs. So it could be a little strenuous. The other one is a rebored BRNO in a Corelight stock, with a 3X Leupold up top. It's pretty easy to shoot, but needs to go on a serious diet.

I'm glad to know there's another 9x57 fan around the Campfire...we may be up to 12 or 13 by now !
I bought 5 boxes of old yellow boxes 250gr Silver Tip 338 Wincheser mag ammo at a garage sale fo 10 bucks total.

I used to own a 338 but sold it back in 87 to help pay some college tuition. I sold or traded most of the 338 ammo to friends. Ten bucks for 5 boxes of vintange Winchester Silver Tip ammo? Good buy.

Now, this is RIFLE LOONY territory!
The obvious point is that this is a good argument to buy another rifle. It is a stronger reason than finding use for brass picked up at the range for an odd caliber.
Looney is in the eye of the beholder.
Good luck!
I've got a buddy that does this same thing with dies.If they're a good buy,he just can't pass them up.
I found a deal on dies and brass so then I went and bought the rifle to match.
yes , then the search goes on for a gun to shoot it in, thats the fun of it, I still haven't found a 257 roberts, that I like so I can use the ,RCBS die set I got for $5.00, (like new),
Absolutely, and I sometimes do the same with dies especially if I hope to buy something in the caliber........someday.

Let's see, there are several hundred 225 Winchesters in yellow boxes, some old 303 Savage, a few 32 Remingtons, a box of 222 Rem Mags.......dies for 358 Norma and 300 H&H, neither of which I own. Dies for 6mm/223, form dies for 445 Super Mag.........

most of it the left over foolishness of a (formerly) single man.
I bought dies, bullets, and cases almost 2 years before I got my whelen.

Uh huh, it is looking that way to me too.

Shopping for the sake of shopping, just that alone is looney, right?
I've also picked up dies and brass when on sale for cartridges "I'm gonna get some day".

It's a start...

How many of those do you have now??

I thought about the .375 H&H and .375 Taylor dies that were for sale here awhile back too ... then came to my senses. Although I still kick myself in the butt now and then for not getting them (they were a great deal!!) & I saw both of them right after they were posted
Buying dies and ammunition for guns that you don't own and then buying the rifle is bad. But what's worse, is picking up once fired cases at a public range and then buying the gun to go with that........................... Guilty.
Irv hit the nail on the head. Been there, done that.
I once bought dies and a box of factory ammo for an XP100 in 7mm-08 that I had on order. Sure enough Remington dis-continued the XP befor I got mine.
Sold the dies and ammo to a friend, then later bought a #7 in 7-08.
Then had to re-buy dies!
Ended up selling the rifle, it just wouldn't shoot to my specs. This time I kept the dies!
I know i'll get another 7-08 someday!

I hate selling dies. I'll sell my brass and bullets before the dies. Dies are like a placeholder, to me.

Scopes are my penchant to buy without the immediate need. Then the jump to a rifle to put it on is less economically strenuous.
i had fair amount of 270wsm ammo stanshed away months actualy maybe a year before i bought the rifle.

i just started pickn up box whenever i was at walmart, now i have dang near a endless supply of knickle brass that i dont care for. aaaaaaa well
we are all nuts, but harmless, I just saw a good deal on a 375 H&H barrel for a rem 700 action,I really want it, but I dont own a 700, to put it on, if anyone knows where there is a 700 with a wasted barrel let me know , quick, please, thanks
I bought 25 boxes of 25-06 federal premium, for $110 with no 25-06 in the cabinet. I wanted one anyway so good excuse to buy one I guess.

I was at a Kmart a couple years ago and found Reminton UMC .38 Special ammo on clearence for $.49 a box of 50!!! At that time I did nor have a .38 of 357 but after buying all they had, around 50 boxes I picked up a S&W 686 at the next show I went to. After I shot up all the ammo I sold the gun for the same price I paid for it. The kicker to make the sale was that I included 50 boxes of once fired .38 brass with the gun!!!
That where I got the 25-06 ammo also, when k-mart was going broke and closing stores.
I've had .280 Rem dies, brass and factory ammo for many years. Had a .280 Rem Win 70 FW for a few months, bought and sold it nib, didn't think the pencil thin barrel would be adequate for the round. Have a new barrel in the white short chambered for .280 and a Mauser 1909 action waiting to be made into a custom rifle. Maybe I'll buy another factory rifle before then. Someday I'll have a .280 Rem to hunt with. Until then I have a 7-08 and a 7 RM.
yep, 300 wsm. own one now.
I've got the brass and bullets for a .22 High Power. Now all I need to do is find a nice 99 or single shot to use 'em in! It looks like this is TRLB....Typical Rifle Looney Behavior
No but I have bought brass and dies for guns I don't own... just in case.
Yup, I do it all the time. I buy Norma ammo whenever I find it at a "bargain" price - gunshows, auctions, etc. I had no idea just how much of it I had until I moved this year and decided to consolidate all my ammo into one cabinet .... yikes!

I bought 100 rounds of Norma brass in 9.3x74 from an "old-timer" at a gun show once. He asked me if I have a rifle that shoots it and I told him "no, it's going in my hope chest". He got a good laugh out of that. But it worked, and now I have a Husqvarna double rifle chambered for 9.3x74 in the safe.
