You Montanans (Montanites?) think you're sooooo cool with your spring bear season.....

Y'all suck! grin

FWIW, we had an extremely mild winter and I had several pics in mid-January as well as tracks most of the winter on the family land.

The only "killing fields" that I can lay claim to at this point are the 7 porkys and 2 'coons that have met their end in my yard.

The 'yotes are gonna pay hell, though, when I can wrangle a couple days off.

Our shooting was slow this trip George, two of us went through 500 rounds of centerfire...which would make a really good morning, but not spread out over two days..
But the weather was nice, and there were enough targetys to keep a guy interested...

They were out all over the road yesterday. I'm going to have to get sick, cough cough, in the middle of the week if I'm going to do any good. Think it'll have to be contagious, I can't go shoot gophers without my hunting buddy.

He still needs to bloody that #3. And to keep in line with the title, it's a .223.

Deal Ingwe. Just don't make them think I'm dying, I'd like to keep a few hours of sick leave on the books for deer season. smile Burn that bug out, alcohol cures all.

I only pull out the aviators for special occasions. Travis on the other hand wastes their magic on everyday affairs. His will mojo will wear out eventually.....

Federal Premium .223 w/62gr bonded bullet; Anything that will penetrate both doors and seats of a Ford Crown Vic will surely kill a deer. And I have cleanly taken four deer with that load so far out of a Ruger M77 Carbine with a 16 1/2" barrel. Why?; because I'm confident with said rifle and my abilities.

that is 95% of it all right there...

a man who practices and knows the capabilities of his equipment is a heck of a lot more competent than someone with a spendy bench rest accurate rifle and a $2000 scope on top, chambered in the Trendy Seasonal WhizBand D'Jour..

knowing what you are doing is a heck of a lot more effective, than just big buck rigs and incompetent hunter wannabes..

I'm taking this as KBruce can't shoot fer shiat and therefore due to his lack of both confidence and ability is unduly assuming it's the rifle and not is inherent lack of ability.

A few steps further........Do NOT.........I repeat......DO NOT let anybody shoot at running game over the cab and hood of your truck when they're riding in the bed and you're driving. This is a helpful hint especially if you have a crew cab truck.

Kdoosh, I promise with that new 7Mag you have, you will make a lot more poor shots than you would if you were using an accurate 223.

I'm taking this as KBruce can't shoot fer shiat and therefore due to his lack of both confidence and ability is unduly assuming it's the rifle and not is inherent lack of ability.

No Im not a bad shot. Im not great but I also dont hunt in a box over a feeder. Well if you call that hunting.

It may be STUPID for you, and while it would probably never be my first choice for mulies, even if it were legal in Colorado, I've no doubt that most deer I'eve taken would have dropped just as quickly if hit with an appropriate .223 load. There are also a lot of deer in other areas of the country where a .223 could be considered "overkill".

STUPID is stating that using a .223 for deer is stupid.

DING DING DING DING (Pause)
DING DING DING DING (Pause)
DING DING DING DING (Pause)

A quick trip to the junk yard for a seat belt buckle will make it stop DINGING too.

PS - I agree though... where's all the brass? Never been on a PD safari, but I envision brass at least 2 inches deep around my feet.

Weak. smile

PPS - KBruce, are you bipolar by chance?
Posted By: ingwe Re: 223 for deer. - 04/06/12
The seat belt was buckled to quell the DING DING DING grin

As for the brass, you guys are right..like to see the floorboards covered, but that being said, Im trying a new "system"....notice the little ammo box on the seat...Im shooting it up in 50 round boxes, and sticking it all back in the box to keep better track of it...

I'll let you know how that goes...... wink

If you're in town tomorrow stop by SW, on the rack should be a new issue of Hunting and Fishing in Montana. I wrote a couple of bruin articles for them. Let me know your thoughts if you find it.

A lot of us have tried.....several times. I'm one to give another the benefit of the doubt and don't give up on people easily. But this one has got to be the stupidest piece of schitt I've ever come across. He sent me postal when he told me "[bleep] you" in a PM after all I had tried to do for him here on the campfire. The ONLY reason we know that's a lie is because you're 15, and you'll have to wait until your testicles descend from your lower stomach, and then your wee-wee will follow suit. Now, most people are acceptably mature by age 15, both physically and psychologically. But you are clearly still a pre-pubescent little 'tard, because that's about the only thing I can think of that would make such a kid into such a dumb, bitter little douche pump.

Posted By: Tanner Re: 223 for deer. - 04/10/12
No sir. For those gigantic NY deer, the lowest I would go bullet/energy wise would be a 265gr TTSX launched at least 3000 fps. And try to limit your shots to 241 yards and in. That is the max distance for that bullet to have enough energy, expansion, retained weight, and a slew of other extremely important designators that I forget about but once heard a guy say on the Outdoor Channel. If you stray from my advice, you suck and are not an ethical hunter.

Quite simple, the .222 is mo' betta laugh akin to the .270 vs. 7x57, albeit different bullet diameters, and not quite as extreme.

Thats why I have a 243! Dumbass.

So in you mind, while it is STUPID to use a .223 on deer, a .243 is a perfectly acceptable choice.

You're kidding, right?

The 243 is the lowest I will use. I mostly use a 30-06. But I have shot a couple deer with a 243.

Doucheboy,

Nice to know you base all your statements of fact on soooooo much "experience".

You hunt deer? You couldn't find an Easter egg if you hired a guide.

WOW!!

.223 will work , but it's overkill ! A real sportsman would us a .22 RF loaded with CB shorts , and not take any shots at less than 100 yds !

Now don't go trying logic on this character... It just isn't gonna fly, unless you like inarticulate (and mispelled at that!) name-calling... You can get all you'd need of that on the main campfire page...

This kid is best ignored imho...
