Anyone seeing 284 Win ammo around..........or is this a hard find ???

Always been hard to find except at the big chain stores or very large gun stores. Cabela's, Scheels, etc. It's expensive, also. Reloading is your friend.

Heck, it was hard to find back in the late 70's when I first hunted with it.

I owned a M88 in .284 WIN and hunted with it for several years; the only factory load I ever saw was Winchester Super-X in the silver box and as Calhoun says, it wasn't widely available. Winchester ammo has a number of rounds on limited production, the .284 WIN is one of them. I handloaded using a 145 grain Speer HotCor bullet - worked great for eastern whitetail. Let me know if you are interested, I have a mint set of RCBS .284 WIN dies I intend to sell (been sorting through a lot of reloading stuff that goes to calibers I no longer load).

Definately a handloader's cartridge. If you don't reload, it might be better to go the 7mm-08 or .270 route.

There is only one load available. 150gr Power Point and fairly anemic. It's a must load cartridge but I'm fine with doing so.

Winchester ammo and brass is a seasonal product, they run some when they have enough orders. The work around is to load it yourself and there is a trick. I bought a supply of Winchester cases when they were available to form into 6.5-284. The reverse is possible by using 6.5-284 Norma brass from Lapua, Hornady, Norma or Nosler I could just run it through the .284 Winchester die, check the headspace and be back shooting the .284 Winchester in no time.

Lot more trouble than it's worth for just a few shots during hunting season though.

I have never seen any .284 ammo, even at big stores like Cabelas and Scheels.

While Winchester is by far the most common, there are at least a couple more options in .284 loads. Cor-Bon loads it with a Barnes X, but you think the Winchester is hard to find on shelves! Also, Graf & Sons carries a line called Precision Cartridge that I guess would be considered semi-custom ammo and they list a .284 with a 140 gr BTSP. We carry the Winchester load in the shop I work at and sell a couple boxes a year. I have a A-Bolt in .284 that does not like the 150 gr Power Point but drives tacks with the long discontinued 125 gr factory load. I have about 2 1/2 boxes left in my stash and would like to stumble on some more at a show somewhere. The deer I've shot with it all dropped in their tracks but the bullets don't exit and end up as shrapnel under the hide on the off side.

Midway has had the 150 gr Win PP ammo at times.

I bought a sweet 284win about 6 yrs back. It's a mint Browning 'Micro-Medallion'. I'm all set up to reload but the seller had about 80 rounds of factory ammo with the deal. I used the gun on my last B bear hunt, bear went zero feet.

I guess if one doesn't reload you should just buy up a supply of ammo when you see it, mail order most likely. Some stores have it on the shelf, $38 or so a box of 20 usually.

Yes, it's hard to find and when you do there is only the fairly mild Win 150-gr load. Really, if you have a 284 and plan to use it much, it'd be well worth your while to reload. There are a hatful of good 7mm bullets and R17 works very well.

Handloading really makes you appreciate the cartridge.
