Want to find a quality leather sling for my model 70. Lets hear some suggestions.
I'll 3rd that motion... I just got my 1st and am buying 3 more!
Nothing says classic like a 1907 sling.
Should be called a MT Carry Strap, 'cause it ain't a sling. A sling has a arm loop.
What's that at the bottom?
You can put it on upside down, too...
Looks like an arm loop... At least that is how I've used it...
Like my Boyts on the model 70's, so I could use the original, correct, swivels.
You need a sling that lets you shoot like this guy, only there is a tad more to it than just the sling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwk3iDMdEDgOr a Ching Sling if you are so inclined, but a third sling swivel is required. They work for me.
Also, I think Galco still makes the "Safari Ching", all leather sling which allows looping up but doesn't require a third/middle swivel. Looks more traditional

Made by Turner or Les Tam.
If you want a leather shooting sling, you may want to check this one out.
It's called the Pronghorn and has an integrated arm loop.

Turners are good, Les Tam is the best of the 1907 but I do not think they are practicle hunting sligs. Top notch for match shooting.
For hunting I like Montana and Murray quick set

Nothing scratches up a stock like a 1907 sling.
I have a Les Tam 1907 sling on my Beretta Mato.

I have had slings scratch stocks but never a 1907. The frogs don't come in contact with the stock and the side towards the stock is nothing but leather.
That is unless you have it set up wrong?

The Pronghorn Sling is pretty slick. I've given some thought to making a Frankensling with the Pronghorn loop on top and the Montana loop on the bottom, just can't bring myself to cut up my Montana...
Right on, I use the 1" slings on standard rifles, and the 1.25" slings on rifles weighing 10 lbs and more.

The Title for this thread was,,Classic Leather Sling, then you said you want a quality leather sling for a Mod 70.
Well I think the true classic for a Rifleman's Rifle is the 1907, none better,,,and the best quality is from Les Tam.
Les makes 1907 slings you can pass down to your grandkids.
However, they are heavy-duty and might be too much if you want to carry that '70 on safari.
I've got a couple Montana's and three Browing Western Stitch. I keep going back to the Western Stitch.
Leslie Tam slings are one of those things that when you see it you can't believe how well it is made. The workmanship and quality are top drawer. It is done by someone who clearly knows what he is doing. They are not easy to come by either. Just my thought on something that you don't see very often. A-One.
Mouse
Mouse is right, I have been to Les Tam's place a couple of times and he does all the work by hand, in a little area next to his house, it is about the size of a "carport". Les is a super nice guy and his 1907 slings are the very best, check them out and you will be impressed.
I have had good results with the 1" Military Sling from Cabelas. Great price and a great product.

I love my Murray Leather Company sling. Simple and really well made.
Resurrecting this old thread to ask the question: What are your thoughts on the Brownell Latigo sling? I am looking for a traditional leather sling for my M77 Tang-Safety, and this sling was the choice of my late rifle guru, Bob Hagel.
Thanks.
Jeff
OK, but what brand did the guys buy back in the 40's, 50's and 60's?
No sling but a Montana for me. I'd give it a good rubbing down with olive oil when you get one though, it'll soften it up alot.

^^^^^. Murray.
The Brownells Latigo is top notch and is my choice in a leather sling. For a synthetic sling I like the minimalist approach of the Uncle Mike's Mountain Slihg.
My thoughts when I first heard the suggestion, but it works.
I like the narrow version on the Montana. Not a true classic, but a well made lightweight leather strap. It is less the 2 oz heavier than the nylon Mountain sling.
The loop works for your arm to go through to be used as a shooting sling if you want. I generally carry it upside down to have the rough side of the leather on my shoulder when walking. It doesn't slide off as easily that way. When I get to where I hunt I can reverse it to use the loop as a shooting aid.
For a classic leather sling on a classic M70, I would look no farther than a M1907-style sling. Infinitely (and quickly) adjustable, usable for shooting as well as carrying, etc. Sure, there are newer (and perhaps better) designs out there, but the man asked about a "classic" sling for his classic rifle.
Brownell's latigo leather sling is excellent.
The Latigo is damned expensive, but I like mine.
Brownell's latigo leather sling is excellent.
Ditto.
Murray sling is like a sore pecker
Yup - even upside down its awesome!!!
