My first 4 centerfire rifles were Remington 700's, started in 1969 with BDL .270, then a BDL Varmint Special .222, Then a 700C .25-06, a cheap WalMart .243 which I sent to GAP as a doner action, then another cheap WalMart .243 for my daughter. Starting with the WallyWorld guns, they just weren't the same as the old ones, but that horse has been beat to death here for quite a while.
ANYWAY, I don't like my AR, so I bought this new 700 5R Milspec, 20" threaded barrel, 9 twist .223, for a walkin varmint and FTR mid-range gun.
Well, when I took it out of the box, it was filthy, don't know why Remy let's em leave like this but I took the barreled action from the stock (which I think I;m the only one who really likes it) cleaned it all off, little light oil and screwed it back together. Action is rough, as expected, the Xmark trigger is quite nice at a creep-free, crisp 4#'s. Way too heavy for me but it is externally adjusted, I'll read up how and then get it as light as I can. The bottom metal, is some cheap alloy.
I'm gonna load up some rounds tomorrow, 69gr SMK's with several powders. I'll shoot it "as-is" see if it has potential. My list of do-dads include, if needed.
1. Jewell Trigger
2. skim-bed or at least the recoil lug
3. Bolt knob
4. Flute bolt
5. Cerakote metal
6. flute barrel
7. Replace fugly threaded muzzle cap with a plain one or add a muzzle brake.
8. If it won't shoot worth a chit, I'll order a new custom barrel and have a $1,000 doner gun. Stay tuned....
