Whatever happened to Remington's "revolutionary" new triangle barrel? I see that model has been discontinued. I'm wondering if discontinued summarizes the whole experiment.
They are going with a Rhomboid
alas, some ideas are just waaaay ahead of their time. I'm sure in 20 years all barrels will be triangles.
You can still get one here, if you really want one...

I like my triangle barrel VTR a lot.
They are combining it with the old ETronX trigger system to make cattle prods from them.
That's what I like about Remington. They are willing to try something new unlike other mindsets who lead boring lives.

They practice capitalism, that's a good thing. Only a socialist would complain.

And they keep manufacturing and assembling those rifles here in the good ole USA. For a company that covers a multitude of sins for me. And I didn't mind the triangle barrel. Supposedly they shoot well, I haven't had a chance to try one.
I kind of like the idea of products made in the USA also. Remington, Ruger, Kimber, Cooper, Smith & Wesson and several others still making good guns for the most part. To each his own.....

Introduce enough loser ideas, and the successful capitalists will complain too.
I like the fact that everything that is in the least bit desirable (not triangular barrels), Remington discontinues.
I've shot several VTR's and they all shot quite well. My .204 Ruger is a VTR, and it will put 10 (not 3 or 5) 32-grain Ballistic Tips in 3/4" at 100 yards.

Generally firearms companies discontinue what doesn't sell. My guess is they sold a VTR or three to everybody willing to try them, and the rest of the shooting community was too set in its ways.
Well I bought a VTR 22-250 of my buddy close to three years ago I just never got around to shooting it,and to be honest I really don't like the stock etc. Anyhow when I bought it,it came with 500 rounds of ammo and I had 200 more of some Hornady stuff. I got out last weekend to shoot it and it shot just great! It put five rounds for the most part touching at a 100 yards. Now I just need to work on the trigger and maybe replace the stock. Will see!
Neighbor has one in 308. It's a shooter for sure.
I never saw one that didn't shoot, but they are kinda like having a queer fishin buddy.
When it comes down to it, it wasn't even the triangle shape that bothered me....it was the silly muzzle brake. Ok, who am I kidding, it was both. And the stock.

They all combined to create an offense to my sensibilities.
my son has a vtr in 223 and it shoots 2 different factory loads around 1/2 moa. the only issue i see with the triangle barrel is that it is "odd" to most.

The silly muzzle brake is a joke! but I think the triangle barrel is cool..........Hb
Actually, the brake works really well, especially for varmint hunters who like to see where their bullets land. It's actually not a full brake, but ports on top, which reduce muzzle jump considerably.
I would have bought one but it wasn't available in a LH version.

The one on my 308 does cut the jump. It's louder than my other 308's, but not nearly as loud/concussive as the Swiss cheese or artillery style side vented brakes.
Just file them away with the old 600, 660, and 673's. There are those who just can't live without one, and those who would rather use them for tomato stakes. If you do have one of the newer triangular barrelled monstrosities, hold on to it, there is a model 600 in 350RM for sale in the shop here with a price tag of $975. I am one of those who have to force myself to not look at it, I desperately want it.
Are we sure that the VTR's are discontinued? The OP only mentions the XHR, which I believe is a long-action version of the VTR. I don't see any shortage of VTR's anywhere online, nor any indication that they have been universally discontinued.

Maybe so, but I think Rems pockets are deep enough to try different ideas out.

In regards to the XHR, I talked with Remingtons chief engineer who designed the triangle barrel. He's a benchrest shooter and hunter like most of Remingtons people.
It wasn't just some marketing idea they came up with the sell rifles.
The triangle barrel really worked great at light counters. The idea came off the shooting bench by people who spend a lot of time shooting, not off a bean counters bench.

As far as Remingtons marketing dept.
I sometimes wonder...
The VTR's are NOT discontinued, except for the .17 Fireball version. In fact they recently introduced a couple of new variations.

Maybe so but I can't handle the head busting muzzle blast..............Hb
From the back side while shooting I can't tell a difference between my ported .308 VTR and my unported 6.5 M70. I can when when I shoot the magnums.
I have 2, .223 and .243 and they both shoot better than I can. I like hunting with the .243 , It feel real balanced to me.
I've got one in 308. It jumps more than my BAR Browning but I guess that's not apples to apples. I don't mind the triangle but wish the porting was gone. Mine loves light for caliber bullets.
I'd buy it again I guess,.....but then I thought the ford Edsel was cool.

I can tell a noticeable difference in muzzle blast between My standard barrel .243 and My buddies VTR in .243 (his is much louder) his rifle is very accurate though as is mine................Hb
SU35: Amen to your posting!

I have two Remington 700 Rifles with the triangle style barrel and they both shoot quite well - thank you.
I hope Remington keeps their "innovative mindset" for a long time to come.
I own a number of Remingtons "innovative firearms" that have performed exceptionally well - and some of them have been discontinued from the Remington lineup.
A few examples:
#1 Remington 788 in 222 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#2 Remington 788 in 223 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#3 Remington XP-100 in 223 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
#4 Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger - shoots exceptionally well!
#5 Remington XR-100 in 204 Ruger - shoots exceptionally well! #6 Remington XR-100 in 223 Remington - shoots exceptionally well!
#7 Remington XR-100 in 22-250 Remington - shoots wonderfully well!
Just to name a few.
I would NOT trade off any of the afore mentioned Remingtons for love nor money.
Just because an item is discontinued from a manufacturers line up does not mean said products are automatically un-worthy.
In fact I hope Remington keeps adding to their decades long lineup of innovative arms and cartridges.
Long live Big Green.
Hold into the wind
