Ran across a used Remington Mountain Rifle chambered in 257 Roberts that the original owner had the barrel fluted. I'm interested in the rifle but am wondering if it's safe to flute such a small contour barrel. What do you guys think?
They are probably very shallow?
Yes, the flutes are shallow
.257 Robers + Mountain Rifle would be an irresistible combination for me.

I just don't know that one would gain a whole lot by fluting that barrel.

You may wanna PM Mickey Coleman to get his take on what the barrel integrity would be, post-fluting. Perhaps non-Plus-P Roberts loads wouldn't stress it all that much?

Like everyone said must be shallow fluting with minimal impact on barrel weight. I think they are right at it (minimum dimensions) as they are. A number of barrel makers claim the same.
I think I'd pass.
Kampfled built one for me and asked it I wanted flutes. He said no weight saving just ascetic if that's what you like.......I passed.
