Remington Mountain Guide
Remington Model 7 with either an Mcmillian Edge or a Brown Stock

Neither of the above comes up for sale very often, but they're both great rifle platforms.

Sako A7
Browning X-Bolt (ignore the haters, they're darn good rifles)
Winchester Featherweight

I've read the Ruger has an atrocious trigger...maybe that's the Hawkeye...LC6 I think it's called.

How about a Vanguard S2?
Posted By: Oregonmuley Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/13/14
I picked up a Remington SPS stainless 7MM-08 a little over a year ago, chopped the barrel to 22.5" and dropped it in a Classic Edge - shoots about everything really well and is a nice rifle IMHO.

or if a repeater is in order, I've had excellent luck with this Browning Micro Medallion in 7-08

light, handy quick, and an excellent shooter.

The Savage model 14 American Classic is also chambered in 7-08 IIRC.

If you're a synthetic guy, Nolser and Forbes are chamberings rifles in 7-08. A Remington 700 in a LVSF, or if you like heavy barrels a 7-08 in the VLS laminte is pretty sweet also.

And has been mentioned, no flies on Sakos.

Good luck in your quest.

Posted By: old_willys Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/13/14
IMO find a Sako A7, I have had several Finnlights over the years and they are nice but I really like the short action A7's especially their 22" barrels instead of the 20" finnlights.

Lots of good suggestions and the one in the classified ads looks most tempting but I'd like one that weighed a tad more. I know the 7-08 probably doesn't kick near as much as my 270 but a 7 lb or so rifle would be good. I'm not familiar with the A7 Sako but will look into that one. So far none found in Savage. I'm not much into synthetics. I'm a "woody" type of guy. smile

You want 7 lbs all ready - Find a Kimber Classic Select

7 lb bare - buy that Featherweight, believe their pushing 7 lbs.

Posted By: barm Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/13/14
Mine is a Weatherby Mark V. It is the 6 lug action and the wood stocked rifle was a bit less than 7 lb before putting a scope on it. Weatherby doesn't show it as a current product, so it would have to come up on the used gun market for you.

This.

SA FWT should be just shy of 8lbs with LW Talleys and a 12oz scope.

checkout savages and marlins, one dosent need the big name rifles to be accurate and last, seems most of them are just a name anymore.marlins can use savage barrels.i wouldnt spend the time to even checkout kimbers and such, most folks still have to tweak them just like an off the shelf rifles so whats the difference other than bragging rights.

If you're a "woody" type and want a 7 lb. rifle the Cooper Model 22 in the Classic or one of the other stock styles ought to fill the bill. For the price IMHO no other production rifle offers the value that a pre-enjoyed Cooper does in regard to qualiity of the wood, fit, finish, trigger excellence and accuracy. I've owned a bunch of em' and had 'nary a stinker. No "roulette" there.

Just sayin'

The repeater models 52, 54 and the new 51 are harder to sneak up on than the single shot models 21, 22, and 38. I've yet to buy one that was not pre-enjoyed. Most folks don't shoot that much and a nick or two just shows character.

Keep an eye out for First Stop Guns' used gun line-up on GunsAmerica. Karnis has had a nice Kimber he's tricked in the Classifieds that I'd not hesitate to own for a second........

7-08 Remi futon Mountain Rifle in stainless with the laminated stock is a real nice rifle. My brother has used one exclusively for ten years. It rolls deer without much fuss; in fact, you can watch the impact through the scope due to the mild recoil. I have one, just not sure I want to part with it.

jay,

Most of the rifles I buy are pre-enjoyed. Any that follow me home have a particular feature(s) that I find interesting. This is one of those. I traipsed into my favorite Gunshop some 12 to 15 years ago and there this was sitting in the used gun rack.

Whoever owned it before me took the time to have the trigger worked on. It breaks with no creep or over-travel at +/- 20 oz. Best Browning trigger I've ever felt. He then had a fluted barrel screwed on. Next he took and had the barrel and receiver and bottom metal Teflon coated. Finally the stock was bedded and the barrel channel opened up so the barrel is free floated from the recoil lug forward. Came with the Talleys. All for about $500 IIRC.

I have been really impressed with my boys Browning Abolt hunter II in 7-08. I replaced the trigger spring and it is a solid shooter. I am so glad he earned his Eagle Scout so I could bring it out for him. Now I have to figure out how to shoot his rifle more often. I absolutely love it.

My Ruger American .30-06 as a pretty good trigger. It is adjustable but so good I have no plans to mess with it. My Ruger Hawkeye L6 trigger was pretty good as well but a little polishing improved it. The single stage triggers on the MKII and M77 rifles are easily improved with a bit of work. All of my Rugers have factory triggers as even the worst have cleaned up very nicely.

Purchased this one for my wife & she loves it.

Savage Lady Hunter, in 7mm-08 Remington.

Has a 1" shorter length of pull & a 20" bbl.

It now wears a 2-7 x Redfield Revolution & has been the extinguisher of life for her 4 deer over the last 2 seasons.

I think you may be doing yourself a disservice by excluding Ruger Hawkeyes because you think the triggers aren't any good, especially when a little work and/ or a little money would correct that. They have a lot of positives to consider, including great reliability and strength, good accuracy, one piece bolts, CRF, and steel bottom metal, all at a very reasonable price.

That said, I would encourage you to handle as many of the rifles suggested here as possible to find the one that feels best to you. That feel is something that only you can really judge.
Posted By: Kitch Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/15/14
Being a long time many decades fan of the late Jack O'Connor, I read in one of his books of his giving the M77 high accolades. I wonder if he'd to that today? Sometimes a man just gets tired of having to do this and that to most all rifles to get them to shoot well. Everything from re-bedding to trigger work. Maybe it's just a pipe dream but I think, although I really know better, that a manufacturer should deliver a product to a customer without his having to take out the barrel/action to do any of the above. I guess that's just not the real world. Sako is the only brand I've never had to do anything but mount scope, work up loads and get great consistent groups.

I had to change the trigger spring on my pre-64 270 Winchester and after that it was great at 2lb 12oz. I had a Remington 700 that no mater what you did to it it just would not shoot under 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Worse rifle I ever had. I've never had a Savage so can't testify to that one. Ditto on the M77. I've only read of the terrible trigger.

You said (wrote) pretty much exactly what I was thinking.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/16/14
I agree in principal, but it's not realistic to expect the same level of detail on a gun that has a street price of maybe $800 as one that goes for twice as much. My new Ruger Hawkeye Predator has a good 2-stage trigger, is well inletted, and functions perfectly. It cost $769, including rings. Blued, walnut stocked ones go for somewhat less.

Sakos, Coopers, Weatherbys, etc. are better finished, smoother out of the box, and I think worth the money, but it's not neccessary to spend $2000 to get a good rifle. Besides, most of us enjoy dinking around with our guns and take pride in our "improvements".

This is really trick question, right? No one had given the correct answer so far I gather too. Hummmmm... This family has 4, Dakota, Browning , Rem 7, 700 Mtn..... Maybe something custom? How about an AI? No, that can't be it, too easy. Golly, I'm so stumped. Since every major, minor and custom maker puts out a 7-08 there has got to be some clue we are missing. I'll keep watching the thread for the surprising and shocking conclusion.

Thank you Slidellkid! It is a big deal for him....and me. I really wish I had finished getting mine when I was a kid, but I got wrapped up in other things and never finished before it was too late. I have few regrets, but that is one.

What you say about Utah and Eagle Scouts is probably true. The Boy Scouts of America has had a very long relationship with the LDS church and so there are many of that faith and others who have earned this award.

His little brother is well on his way to earn his Eagle rank as well. Of course he is already picking out which rifle he wAnts as well. A little bribery would have kept me motivated as well. ;0)

Mark's little Browning accounted for three clean kills this year. Nice muley buck, antelope doe, and an antlerless elk.

Were I to buy another rifle, it'd be a Sako. They will shoot better that custom guns.

BTW, the 7MM-08 Rem is an excellent cartridge.
Posted By: 65BR Re: 7-08 Rifles - 04/23/14
I Love Sako's, but if you ever have a custom.....well, nothing compares IMHO, if you start with a premier action, barrel, etc. and a good smith to properly bed a quality stock, then top with good glass.

Not a thing wrong with a Sako, and yes they will shoot well too, all mine did anyway.

I shoot an older Remington 700 BDL (1983) that is bedded in a McMillan. Factory barrel. Topped off with Talley LW's and a 2.5-8 VX3. It is a joy to carry. It'll do its part if I do mine.

Looks like every brand has been represented in one answer or another so I will add my two cents worth. I have two 7MM-08s. One is a Remington SPS and the other a Remington Model 7. Both will place three shots under a quarter at 100 yards and give some change back. I have used the 7MM-08 on the local Blacktails using Nosler 120 gr. Ballistic Tip and they hit the ground hard.

I bought my wife a stalker x-bolt a few years back and she never liked it for the synthetic stock. I shot very well but when she saw the x-bolt micro hunter she had to have it so we traded. She likes the wood stock as you alluded to earlier and the length of pull fits her better. It shoots very well also. With the 140 nbt it has done everything we've asked of it

Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm-08. Howa does the lightweight model with the machined sides. Would be great gun, also the Ruger American. I just bought one of these and for the price I had no expectations. First 4 loads through it all went under 1/2". Just love it although hard to look at all my customs the same way!
