Any one out there run a Steyr Pro Hunter?? Winchester Australia is bringing in the Pro Hunter and selling then for around the $1000 AUD mark - compared to the Pro varmint which is selling for around the $2K mark.
Snapped one up in 308 stainless....
Any good or bad ........all feedback welcomed. I have tested a Pro Varmint in 243 and found it very well made and accurate.

I have, and cherish, a Steyr Scout. Similar but the action is different. I like the safe action safety system. One thing about the Steyr, at least in 308, is the chamber is about four thousandth's of an inch longer than the US standard. This has caused a couple of failures to fire with GI ammo. The cartridge can slide forward, soaking up some of the firing pins inertia.
My Scout gives MOA accuracy routinely.
Have the. 308 and the 376. Have also owned a 7-08 and a 300 win. mag.
People either love them or absolutely hate them. I love them. Great trigger, better than average accuracy. DBM. Love the safety system. Love the lower position for the mag to hold it but not allow it to feed from it. Love the open sights on my 376. Love the closed action that keeps debris out and the removeable butt spacer for when Im wearing heavy clothes.
Other than the crappy plastic stock they're perfect for me.
Nail drivers, very well designed, extremely easy to load for.
A bit on the heavy side, but you get a very accurate rifle instead.
the pro hunter is an acquired taste. I have one in .243. well-balanced, very accurate, kind of heavy, fits me REAL well because I was able to remove a stock spacer, great fit and finish, great trigger.
The Steyrs are sleepers when it comes to accuracy, once you find the ammunition it likes. I had a 308 Pro Hunter I bought for $550, and it would put Hornady 150gr SSTs at 3,000 into .267". Crazy.
For the price tag its hard to go past - I think that Winchester here is importing these to take on the Tikka T3 which is distributed by Beretta Australia.
Should fill the gap between my Howa Custom 7-08 and and Howa Custom 30-06 - and will make a handy all rounder firing 130 grain Win factory loads with the Woodleigh projectile.

Have a 8x68S in a Pro Hunter, very accurate rifle. Being the only PH SBS I have owned it is on the heavy side like other have stated. The only modification I made was to stiffen up the forearm.
I've had three, a 260, a 7mm Mag, and a 376 Steyr. Liked them all. Got rid of the 376 as I moved from Alaska, sold the 7mm to a relative, and I still have never fired the 260. Will have to remedy that one of these days.

only one, a 260 wouldn't shoot.
my 376 will shoot into an inch at 200 with 270 soft points.
sad thing is, I now compare other rifles to steyr accuracy and find them lacking.
so, its hard to grab anything else for serious work. they spoil you.
I Have been reading issues where the early models (Mk1's) had issues with the fore end flexing too much - probably an issue if you use a bipod or similar ....I dont know if the current models have had the fore end stiffened up with internal cross braces or similar.
Mine will be purely a general purpose unit -stalking or shooting from a vehicle. Should be just fine.

I had a 20" barreled mountain version in 308. VERY accurate, but ended up a LOT heavier than I wanted in a 20" carbine so I let it go.
The odd shaped bolt handle required the scope to be mounted higher than I wanted in order to clear. Magazines can be expensive and a little hard to find.
If none of those quirks are a concern it is a darn good rifle. It just wasn't what I was wanting.

This is true. I had to use warne mediums with a leupold, bolt handle would not clear with lows.
I have a 308 and a 6.5x55 Prohunter. The good: well made, adjustable LOP, accurate. The bad: shape of bolt handle, heavy, rotary safety can be difficult to manipulate with gloves on.
it's the 90 degree lift. there plenty of metal in the handle to grind a bit of your mounting with low rings.
magazines are $50 New from steyr.

I have an early model in 270. Grey (not black) stock. The US distributor is about 15 miles from my home, so I went out and asked their gunsmith if it was worth paying the big bucks to get the new black stock. He asked how far I was shooting, and did I use a bipod. When I told him 300 yards or less, no bipod, he told me to save my money. Another smith advised me to rest my rifle just forward of the magazine. I don't reload, but I have found a factory load that shoots half inch 3 shot groups (on a good day). I have killed a lot of whitetail deer with that rifle. If I could only have one deer rifle, that would be the one.
