Is this basically a M70 action?
Posted By: BobinNH Re: Dakota 76 - 07/21/14
Sort of a copy with different bolt release and better breaching. Nice action. Trigger is the old style M70.

Kind of a cross between a Mauser 98 & a Pre '64 M 70.

Pretty rifle! smile
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
I think one could be had in a 7x57.
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
And a .270....
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Since Don Allen died a gay element has crept into Dakota..
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Really,Dakota will build a .280 AI....
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
That would be like a 7mm Awesome Ingwe! laugh
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Or a .280 A** Injector. wink

What? I'll bet Uncle Benjamin can convince them! smile

If I had a lot of money...

But one of these would work, too...and yes it's a 7x57...

Posted By: RevMike Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
This is in 7x57 as well, but I really like that African.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=417219657

It strikes me as a bit odd that the African is in .358 Win. Great caliber but not typically an African cartridge in my mind.

Why would someone do such a thing with the .270 available?

Not a Dakota, but here's a 7x57 for all you Neanderthals... smile

I'm kinda liking this one.

I'm gonna go shave my back and buff the callouses off my knuckles.

Forend is too long and the front swivel is in the wrong place.

Reverend I seen that one too....great,old classic for sure!

Yeah, but that can all be fixed. Do you think that side mount puts the scope over the bore? Maybe lets you use the sights without removing the scope?

If I was a .358 junkie I think I'd rob a bank and jump on that Dakota Africa.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Didn't even notice the side mount. Thats a deal breaker.
Posted By: RevMike Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Yeah, pretty much. Does that look like. No 1 contour to you? Looks a bit light for a No 2. I'm thinking a quarter rib will fit a No 1 better. What do you think?
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
If I knew the difference, I'd tell you

Barrel contours vary with manufacturer.I think . crazy
Posted By: RevMike Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
I've noticed that too. From what I see it's about .10 inch at the muzzle. Good question for Mule Deer.
Posted By: shortactionsmoker Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
LGS has 50-60 Dakota's in stock. They have or have had at least one of every model they make.

They have a 76 Alpine Deluxe in 257 Roberts that's about as pretty a rifle as I've ever seen.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
you suck.
Posted By: Savage_99 Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Here is the Dakota 76 .358.
[Linked Image]
Price: $8,950.00

I have had .358's for half a century and am all set.

If did not have a .358 and wanted one for actual hunting I would get a 99F so chambered.

99 .358 for sale

Several here have visited the place. Harry (Battue) was here last fall and I'm still surprised he didn't leave with a Dakota or Cooper. I had to pull him from the isle where they are displayed...

If they weren't more gun than I need I might be all over that Dakota. Pretty rifle.
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
The .358 Win is not exactly a barn burner. Think with a 250 gr Silvertip it's getting around 2250 fps with factory ammo. If you can find it. wink
Posted By: RevMike Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
Sort of a .308 after too many doughnuts. Actually, it would probably be about perfect for my type of hunting - all within about 150 yards - but I don't want to start rationalizing!! cry
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
A rifle looney never ever "rationlizes" about buying another firearm!

Look at me,for example,I never rationalize about buying firearms.

You wanna know why, rationlizing give me a headache. wink smile

Just ask my wife, she'll agree with that statement!

I might just take the easy way out and contact Dakota to see what's offered. No way it can even approach what Westley Richards wants for their M98-based rifle.

At least I don't think. eek
Posted By: shortactionsmoker Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
I ran by the LGS during lunch. My estimate was low. I counted 84 on the shelf.

What exactly are you looking for? They may have one in stock.

Something like that African, only with maybe another inch of barrel and in 7x57. I'm thinkin' something like that would have to be made.

I told my wife that before I die I'm going to treat myself to one very nice rifle. I'm just trying to put it together in my head. I pretty much know what I'm looking for, but I think it's going to be a semi-custom proposition.

Here's another one for Ingwe: The King of Bling.

Just got a note back from Dakota Arms. This rifle isn't exactly as listed. It's their Classic all dressed up in African options.

And yes, they'll put one together in 7x57 with the classic 1:220mm twist, 5-6 month delivery. That would be just in time for my birthday!! grin

I have a friend who has 1 in 7x57, I'd guess it is about 20 years old

By the way Ingwe, you got a Bass Pro out your way? Down here they have Thermacell on sale for $25 and that includes the holster that you normally have to buy separately. You're gonna want one when you venture to our fair state.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Dakota 76 - 07/22/14
No Bass Pro here, but Ive got a buttload of Cabelas points on my card.

If it was me ordering a Dakota, this is what I'd get.

22" barrel.

Upgrade the stock.

NO cheekpiece.

Caliber whatever is striking my fancy at the time.

Every thing else is just money in a hole. smile

FWIW, here's a M10 in .358. Decent piece of wood, too... smile

I had this early 416 Rigby for a number of years. Perfect feed and extract and was very accurate with the 400 gr Hornady and RL22. Beautifully made piece. I bought it for a song and sold it for twice the song. grin Gent from SoCal bought it for a buffalo hunt. I see it is now for sale at Champlin's.

We're just down the road from Dakota Arms. First Stop Gun in town claims to have the largest selection of Dakotas. Don't know for sure, but they have a bunch.

I could really like that Dakota 10 if it didn't have that gawd awful pad hanging on the butt. A Niedner plate would look sooooo much better..
