This will differ if you are a farmer with 1000 prarie dogs in your pasture, a fur collector of bobcat and fox or a rancher in Wyoming raising sheep....Add your circumstance or activities to justify your post !! (fun, boredom, yet fun !)
As long as you limit yourself to nothing larger than squirrels, the 375H&H is perfect. whistle

Seems like when I grab my 204's and shoot them, I remember why I like them so well!
225 Win. grin

These ridiculous opinion polls never answer the real question of what is best. The 222 Remington magnum is, in fact, utopia in the realm of varmint cartridges. Anything less is just that and there isn't anything more...

When legend becomes fact, print the legend.
Maxwell Scott
If fur is not a factor I would use a .243 barrel life can go in a hurry if you run it hot. Second .223

Is that fact, legend or opinion????????? wink

I am a Coyote caller that loves it when a bobcat shows up...hide preservation is not my primary concern. For me, the 223AI is what makes me happy. For my calling partner, the 243AI is his preference. Either one makes them dead.
For long range coyotes I like my .257 Roberts and a 75g V-MAX.

For the smaller stuff I use a .22-250.

For high volume stuff you need multiple rifles. I've added a .223 to the safe. It will do 90% of what the .22-250 will do but with less powder and less barrel heating and cheaper factory ammo if that is a concern.

My .22LR has taken untold numbers of prairie dogs but doesn't have the range of the centerfires.
Either the 17 Rem, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, 22-250, or 243, depending on situation.

We've got it good these days when it comes to selection.
This hunting season I saw more grizzlies than coyotes. I will stick with the 9.3X62.

For little stuff it's the 204. Or for doggies including wolves the 253 (243AI) with the 105 A-Max.
I prefer the original standard of excellence, the .222 Rem.
.17 Rem for fur.

.204 for colony varmints.
As hogs and coyotes are our main "varmints", I'd say the .243 is about right for the average shooter (here). That said I use a 22-250...but I'm not "average". smile

Factual opinion, from a legend....

.223 is the perfect varmint round when you might see some deer.

I'm a 'summer p/dog buster' 20 cal's have become a favorite

20 Vartarg..20-222...20 Practical...

Although by summers end..when the dog's coat gets heavier..

will reach deep in the safe for the 223AI..6BR..or 6XC..

If that don't work...always have a heavy 6.5x55......

20-222 shown in pic........

It aint jealousy...its frustration.....this .222 mag stuff is starting to sound like endless prattle from an old dude who is billed as 'legendary'. Theres another one on this site that goes on and on about the 7x57. Sheesh...

Where do you people find these old farts?
Geez, you really are all stewy....

I thought you were gonna say, "Nah, I just wanted to post the catsup packet that offed himself"

It's catsup, not ketchup

Thanks for the clarification on condiments and spelling.

Truth be known the only reason I tuned into this thread is because the spelling Nazi in me wanted to see what an "opion" was....

And, BTW the .223Awesome Ingwe is that answer to the OPs question...
.17 Remington. Great for ground squirrels. Great for prairie dogs. No finer fur cartridge.

Travis
And I thought 'catsup' was a contraction of the words cat and soup. Judging by recent trapping posts, Shrapnel could fill you in on cat soup too... grin
The same as it was in 1935, the Swift.

Please tell me you have "Awesome Ingwe" stamped on at least one barrel.

PS: I am still considering the Turdlike McSwirley, with a bevy of browns....still debating on the 1% yellow for corn representation....and yes, it would be a 223AI.
If I were building a dedicated varmint rifle, it would be a 22-250. But since I already have a 222 that works well, I will stick with that.
.243 Win. Beacause I own two and both are very accurate way out dare with 58 Vmaxs over Varget.

.223 Rem. Because I have a very acurate AR Rifle-length/heavy that is super accurate with Varmageddons and Varget plus a hoot to shoot. Got a Hakeye 9 twist I'm working on now. Bullets and brass laying everywhere at my place!

.22-250 would be my choice if I didn't already have all these 243s and 223s.

Ridiculous thread.

+1
If I had to pick one for everything, it would be .223. That said, my 22 K-Hornet is my favorite and is most all I use anymore for the big buck sabre toothed charging ground squirrels we have around here whistle
The 223 Remington will handle all my varmint hunting chores.YMMV
