All,

We're ready to move forward with the group buy on the Montana Rifle Company/Whittaker Guns exclusive. I discussed this with Rick and we decided to list it in the hunting rifles section in lieu of the classifieds. This rifle will only be offered to members of 24hourcampfire. If they all don't sell, I stick the remainder on the shelf at the shop. The specs on the rifle are below.

- Montana Rifle Company Extreme X2 (stainless/synthetic)
- 260 Remington
- Fluted 22" barrel
- 1 in 8" twist
- MRC X2 green stock with black/gray webbing
- 20 right hand rifles, 5 left hand rifles
- $1259.99 (plus shipping to your FFL)

If you'd like to get in on the buy, please send an email to [email protected]
Please include:

- MRC Exclusive in the subject line.
- Your full name and screen name on here.
- Your contact info including your phone number
- Your preferred method of deposit payment

Someone will contact you to process the order ASAP (if during business hours). A 15% non-refundable deposit is required to hold your order. Methods of payment are credit card, personal check, certified check or money order. A 3% fee will be added for all credit card transactions. The price listed above is at a cash (or check) discount. Balance will be due in full once the rifles are ready to ship -- you can even pay over time while waiting if you'd like. You will be charged exact shipping to your locale, not an inflated estimate. US only at this time. I'm still working on potential Canadian orders.

Lead time is approximately 12-14 weeks once the stocks are complete. Before shipping, we will require a signed copy from your receiving FFL.

This buy will be limited to 25 rifles. The second (and different) batch of exclusives will be announced the first week of April.

MRC sent me a picture of their green stock for reference. The picture below was taken upon completion of painting and the tape hasn't been pulled yet. I'm posting it for a color idea.

Feel free to email/PM questions! IF WANTING IN IMMEDIATELY ON THE BUY, PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO THE ADDRESS ABOVE. I can't always answer PM's and will only use the email as a time stamp.

Thanks in advance and I'll update this post as needed!

Wow. Good deal for sure.
Darrik, sorry if I missed this one but what will the approximate weight of this rifle be as specified above? Thanks.
Typed in wrong e-mail address and it was kicked back to me, but I have corrected it and you should have my e-mail now.

I have a habit of typing a "q" where a "g" should go.
I got it and replied Ed. Thanks again!

Greg,

They list the rifle as 6lbs 14oz on their site, but this one will have a fluted barrel. I'm not sure if the weight listed is with the old or new stock, but the new stock is lighter than the older B&C.

I don't guess we'll have a true weight until one is finished! An estimate would be in the 6lb 10oz range bare...
Curious, but can't a FFL ship to a private individual?
No sir!
Are these bedded from the factory? If yes, how? Are they glass pillar bedded or what?
Yes...glass pillar bedded.
I sent you and email.

Please put me down for a lefty
Thank you sir -
Looks like a nice rifle.
Web site says pillar and glass bedded.
Sent email but neglected to specify right handed.
any idea how it will be throated?
Their 260 reamer is good to go. Mine is a couple of years old, but jeffbird has a newer 260. You shouldn't have any problem reaching the lands with any and all high BC bullets. The mag box in these rifles is quite generous. That's another appeal of the rifle...
Damn it - house closing is next month- I'm aways out from participating!
What kind of trigger does the MRC offer. Do they offer Custom LOP?
I should be in. Just sent an email
SAS,there any special engraving or SN specifying that this is an exclusive 24hr/Whittaker rifle?
Alright put me down for one. I think this is exactly what I wanted. Email incoming.

Edit:
Oh yeah, right handed please!

This is exactly what I wanted too. Put me down for a right hand gun. Email coming.

I have sent you an email, hope it went through.

We didn't do any engraving. We pondered the idea, but most of the guys didn't want anything on the floor plate. I plan to include some goodies in the box, as well as a certificate signifying the exclusive.

The trigger is the same design as the older Winchester Model 70. It's an open trigger -- fully adjustable.

Let me check with MRC on the LOP.
Guys,

Lock is going to start calling about deposits in a few minutes. I've printed the emails and created a spreadsheet.

I'll let everyone know whats left this afternoon or tonight.

Thanks for the response and support!
email sent for rt hand gun

thanks for doing this

DD
how bout little 24hr on barrel?
I asked....MRC wouldn't/couldn't do it.

Roger that.......would think you could do 260REM. 24HR SPCL
It would add value, like "Dale Earnhardt" on the Remmie stocks.

Looking forward to seeing these get the dog snot run out of them. Really curious to see crossover in load development.

And glad I hoarded 260 brass....
I will take one right hand rifle.

Put me down for a right hand model! Will be for our first grandkid who was born last week!! Of course it will need to be thoroughly tested before he can take possession!

Email sent to you Derrik - thanks for putting this together.

(Hope he is right handed)

Using a Stoney Point/Hornady comparator with an inner diameter of 0.253", base of the shell to ogive contact with the lands is 2.270". The mag box is 3.125", so the magazine can accommodate 0.855" maximum length of nose in front of the ogive to still to able to load into the magazine. This is based off of measurements on Barnes 100 grain TTSX.
Sounds like an awesome rifle, I'm not looking for a .260 but when you make .243, 6mm CM or BR I'm in.

That made me laugh.

And if he isn't right handed, well, darn the luck, you'll just have to keep it!

Don't laugh -- we still have three of the Dale Earnhardt 700's on the shelf....
boogity, boogity, boogity.....
Guys,

17 of the rifles are spoken for. We have 8 left. I can't give a breakdown on right hand vs. left hand yet because a couple guys didn't specify action orientation. We've sent emails and called for verification. I'll update tomorrow morning.

I do know for a fact 2 of the 5 left handed rifles are gone...

Thanks!
Email sent for a right hand X2.

Thanks

Same here. The specs were perfect except I'm looking for a .243. If it were AI'd, even better.
e-mail sent for a RH
Good show guys those 260's sound very nice. Looking forward to seeing how they shoot, if they are like Jeffbird's gun you will be very happy.
I talked to Darrick today and I'm in rh
Any chance of getting one with a 24" barrel

Apologies, but not on this one.

20 of the rifles are spoken for. I've returned all emails as well.

Double_D and Jim - thanks! Pretty exciting having a grandson.

Jim - not sure you remember, but I bought a 7x57 Ruger #1 from you several years ago here on 24HCF. What great gun that's taken whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn and a couple coyotes. That will probably go to him or his future sister or brother also.

Derrik - sorry for the off topic diversion - but that's what proud grandparents do!!

OK - back to the topic………..
I'll take a LH version. Email incoming.
I'm in for a right hand per my email.

What's the current count?

An AI wouldn't bother me either.
I used to live in Evansville and made the trek to Whittakers a few times while I lived there. This thread is a great example of listening to your clients and delivering a product that they want. Congrats to the team at Whittakers. I've got a lefthanded 260 at present, but will be watching the future releases.

Derrick, I understand this is a very open question, but do you think a stainless .308 will be offered in the future?
20 20+ rifles sold in a day or two - all over twisted for caliber.

Who knew?

/sarcasm
Guys,

There is one right hand rifle still available.
There are two left hand rifles still available.

I'll update as the day progresses....

Thanks again!

Kenneth,

Honestly, I'm going to leave that open to the members here. Towards the end of the month I'll start a new thread about the next run. That's why I'm doing it the way I did. I want your input.

BTW -- I'm a big 308 fan...
One right hand rifle left.
One left hand rifle left.
Maybe this was answered in the other thread by why the limit to 25? I know you were committed to 25 per quarter but most group buys I've seen set some minimum limit - i.e., we need to order at least this many whatevers to get the company to make the special run, but if we get orders for more than that then so much the better.

Not criticizing, just curious.
Jim,

My total commitment was 100. 25 per quarter. These rifles are on top of our/their normal business. We had to set a goal for production because these rifles won't be in their normal spec (special twist, flutes, etc.).

Please keep in mind that we may be stuck with some inventory too. This buy went well, but we may only sell half of the next run and I'd be committed to selling them in house. Make sense?
Perfectly, thanks. wink
I'll take the last right handed
Got it!

One left hand rifle still available....
If there are any of the right hand models fall through, I would love one.
Make the next group either 7-08 or 284 win, and I'm on board. Interested to hear from the rest of our 'fire brothers how this bunch turns out. Thanks SAS.
284, twisted and throated correctly, is the only thing truly unique that would be a hot item in this series.
I think a 243 would be nice, with a 1-8" tube.

Particularly with the generous mag box that the Montana has.
Exactly
Yeah a 243 would be near perfect. How about a 6mm Remington in factory or AI configuration? Is there enough mag box in the MRC to seat the 105gr.+ VLD's to a good OAL?

I've not messed with the 6mm Rem except for a Ruger M77 with 100gr. cup and core spitzers.
I do know that it appealed to me as a teeny bit better than the 243. Maybe. But that's the fun of it all ain't it?
A 284 throated for the long box would be the schnizzle.
I'm still bummed I wasn't in a position to get one of these....
Too soon?

[Linked Image]
Nice. Was wondering what people were going to top their rifle with.
I have a 3.5-10x40 VX-III that I am going to put on mine initially. After some load development it shoots little small groups with good long range bullets (3/4" or less) I will replace that scope with something I can dial and play with it long range. If accuracy is good to average ( 1" plus) I will keep the VX-III on it and use it for a woods rifle, 200 to 300 yards maximum.

I will be happy going either way.

Nope. I call that good planning!

Have not found any Lapua brass in stock at the usual online retailers. Will stop by my local guy sometime this week. He usually has a good supply of 6.5mm bullets - the brass I'm not so sure. In a pinch, I'll get some Nosler brass just in case the Lapua does not show up.

I have 100ct of brand new Lapua 260 Brass if anybody is interested. $120 shipped, exactly what I paid. Sold!

I'm with you! Nearly exactly what I want for my next rifle.
A couple of days late on my part. Please put me in as a backup for a right handed rifle.
Thx Jim
Who's gonna be the first to sell one off in the Classifieds?
Did SAS get one, if so my money is on him....
I wouldn't give you even money....

I didn't get one. They sold too fast and I wanted everybody here to grab what they wanted first. Besides, I already have a MRC 260.

Not to mention I have about a bajillion other guns I want to buy from the shop....
Darrik,
You need to have a one day "Campfire Special" at the shop. Where we can all meet and greet each other, and maybe buy a rifle or two...
Just a thought...
Good idea Marty!

I'm actually planning something similar in the fall. More to come later...just bring your checkbook!!

It'd be more like Friday Night Fights....
I just saw this. If there's a right hand left I'll take one. Any chance of running more than 25 if they're all spoken for?

I would have to throw a twisted, throated, 243 win into the mix for that conversation. Considering its generous mag restraints, it would be an instant hit. It would be a serious mistake if one of the group buys weren't spec'd accordingly.
My interest is in a 7mm08 so I didnt pick one of the first runs up but am hoping there some pic and reviews on the 260 as they come in. Im anxious to see them.

Interesting,,,,,

But whens the last time you saw brass?

Wouldn't a 7mm-08 be more sensible?

A little pricier, but 6.5x284 Lapua is just a stroke away from 284.
Guys,

The buy is officially closed on the first run. We mailed the check to MRC for payment in full on the first batch a few minutes ago.

With that being said, I still have one left hand rifle left. If nobody here claims it, I'll put it on the shelf when they arrive.

Thanks again to everybody involved. I'll post another thread around the end of the month addressing the second batch of rifles.

SAS,

Thanks again for putting this together. I am looking forward to seeing how the rifle shoots.

To my fellow lefties,

Come on, we cry about the lack of lefty options but here is a company offering some quality rifles for us. SAS could have easily sold 25 right handed rifles and not bothered with us. We can't even purchase 5? No wonder most companies won't bother making left handed rifles.
Next rifle wishes?
The last lefty sold! Thanks again!
I did not participate but thanks SAS for putting this together!
You're very welcome! I look forward to more of these things in the future.....
This is kind of fun.
I'm saving my pennies for a left handed 9.3x62mm wink

So do I.

Congrats to the buyers and especially SAS for putting it all together.
I'm betting there will several more GOOD items to come out of Whittaker Guns/SAS in months to come........

I'm damn patient as you well know. Still waiting on you to shoot Carl Ross' positional shoot. For someone who is supposed to be so damn good, you'd think you would have gotten it done by now... wink.

Gave all my .243's to son and grand kids. Still have some components. In a LH, that would be tempting... But.. Still holding out for a LH 6.5x55... grin
Well, since they've all sold, I will post my MRC XCR 260 for sale. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be self serving as I am trying to give someone interested in a brand new MRC Stainless 260 first shot before I post it in the classifieds. It's not one of the special runs offered here; but, it is a 260 MRC XCR, unfired. I will sell it for $1135 shipped and insured. Like I said, I posted it here for those who may have missed out on the special runs. I will be posting it in the classifieds next week. If interested, send me a pm. shortactionsmoker, irrespective of my motives, if you feel it inappropriate of me to have posted at the end of this thread, let me know and I will delete it. I will send you a pm to bring this to your attention.
If anyone bails on a RH , I'll take it.
PM me. Thanks
Just saw this - its good to see entrepreneurism at work!
Update...

I spoke with MRC yesterday. The barreled actions are complete. They're currently waiting on the safety. The stocks are in process. Things should be popping up soon.

Hopefully, they'll give me a firm timeline within a week or so.
Dat is a very cool thing you are doing Darrick.
Indeed!
Thanks for the update, I'll call in the morning
When is group buy round #2?
Sweet!
Just made another payment. $200.00 every other week and it's almost paid off. Easier on my mad money account. Now were they to offer a 9.3x62 next, this would start all over again. What scope and rings are you all thinking about?
I have a VX-3, 3x10x40 with CDS waiting and am thinking about using Talley UL rings
Thanks, one of my favorites. But open to ideas. Really want something like a 2x8x36 with turrets.
Any updates on when these rigs will be ready?
I'll call them today and post an update!
I was here researching, looking for the same info?
Any data yet on batch #2?
How in the world did I miss this? mad What a neat thing to do SAS.

Greg
Will be starting with a Leupold VXR Patrol 3x9x40 TMR illuminated
I emailed, but got the out of office response. He'll return on the 14th and I'll post an update then!

Of all the suggestions I've received by PM, I'd say the 358 Winchester is the leading contender.
Is it gonna look like this one?

[Linked Image]
Minus the drool I hope.
A stainless 358 with a 20" barrel and open sights would be interesting. I kind of miss my 338 rcm.

Bb
news?
Damn. Was hoping for a 270..

W
If you do a 358 run I'd be in for one for sure then.
Me too!
I'd be all about a .358. Have been "planning" one in my head for a few months.
I'd be in for 35 Whelen or 9.3x62
One vote for 7 WSM, 1:9", 24", and add a saddle type cheek rest.
7mm-08
9" twist
22" fluted

I would definately take another in an 8 twist 243. I'm also thinking a 284 win might work with that 3.1" magazine. Make that an 8.5 or 8.75 twist.

Bb
I'd love either a 7X57 or a 308.

I'm in the same boat. Not sure how I missed it. I'm definately awaiting news on the next batch. 9.3x62 would be a great choice.
358 Win please
.416 Rem/Rigby/Taylor/Dakota any of those would be fine with me. smile
Yeah, those should sell like hotcakes.
I want one.
Buy 25 and you might get your wish to come true.
Mmmmmm hotcakes.......

I'm in on the .577 T-Rex buy.
I'd love a 318 Westley Richards.

How about a 6.5-06 with #2 contour barrel and tan with black speckle tone stock.

8 twist 22-250AI #2 22". You can paint it purple with yellow dots for all I care.

W
Yeah a 1-8" twist 243 with that mag box would be awesome.
400 Whelen.
The two chamberings that will make for a unique offering that makes the most of the platform are the 284 and 9.3x62.

I've have a 1:8" 6.5x55 long action ordered. But gotta admit, that a 1:8" .243 on the short action would be interesting... grin

I might have to get in on that one, and I havent gotten the first one yet! I am really considering a 6.5-06 build
I call dibs on an extra if one needs a home.

Geo
Just stumbled across this. Neat idea and since I missed the .260 the .243 would ring my bell.

6.5-06 AI with at least a 24" tube. I'd be all over something like that.
257 weatherby, 26" fluted stainless, tan stock with gray webbing or 358 wsm with 24" fluted...

Got that one covered. Let's push for a 6.5-284 maybe for something different? Good brass available.
How about a sub 6# 6BR?

I've got this exact rifle but with a #3 Brux tube I'll be selling here shortly as soon as I get it back from Kampfeld - If interested, PM me. 24" tube -
Might just do that.....thanks
How about a 24" fluted 7mm wsm?
How about a 338-06. We already had a 6.5 so a mid bore might be nice.
How about a 275 Rigby. I know it is a 7 X 57, but the name has cachet.
Some of you might want to go checkout the MRC website, they already list chamberings you're suggesting.
AVR stainless 20" 400 Whelen.
43 Egyptian would be cool too!

Some of you guys are so damn silly.
Getting close to shipping time?
I'll see your 43 Egyption and raise you a 25 Stevens Rimfire.

Actually, a 270 Win with a 1/8" twist would be sweet. The bullet manufacturers are bringing out more VLD bullets in .277".

Too late for me... I already have a 1:8TW, .277" Lilja blank sitting here. Trying to figure out which action I want to have it fitted and chambered...
Delivery date set yet?
Like waiting for a custom, almost minus a year or so. Got my scope ,rings and bases on hand already.
I hope these guns shoot great for you guys.
Yeah I'm curious to see how these will turn out. I would like to see a side by side review between a Faux Ti (ITD re barrel) and this group buy. The money would be comparable. The longer mag well really is a big advantage though.

They're going in the stocks now! I spoke with them late yesterday. I expect them to start shipping Immediately....
FFL to your Fax #? Will call about shipping cost. Rifle paid. Thanks.

That is some good news. I am excited to get my hands on the rifle.
I truly appreciate everyone's patience, as does MRC. This has taken a little longer than expected, but I'm going to defend them in this situation. The company that was making the stock mold didn't meet their deadline date...they missed it by a mile. Had I, or the MRC guys known this, we would have postponed the buy or been more accurate about the delivery date.

Thanks again!
Good deal.

Any idea what V2 caliber will be....I think they skip 25-06.....
Thanks for the update Darrik. Got to get off my rear end and get some scope mounts ordered now!!
SAS

No problem here.
I always expect these things to take longer than the estimate. I'm excited to shoot mine. Still hoping for an 8 twist 243 too.

Thanks,
Bb
Will there be a separate thread for second group buy? I have high expectations for these rigs; don't mind the wait if they perform.
Like the others, I do not mind the wait if they shoot good, point good and carry nice.
Make sure you send me the specific one I asked for; it's the one guaranteed to neuter flies out to 600.
Any news on these shipping?? Thx Jim
Powder Valley has Lapua 260 brass in stock for those who need it
eBay has new EGW rail for $29.99 includes shipping , both 0 and 20 MOA
100 pieces of new RP brass in the classifieds at AR. $60. I was a nice boy and passed.
I received a shipping notification today! I don't know how many are coming, but it's starting..

I asked them to ship as they came off the line rather than holding them until they're all done. Emails will be sent out as soon as they arrive. I'm just going down the list in the order I received commitments.

Sweet! Like Christmas early.
Looking forward to seeing them.
I hope enough guys pass so I can get one since I am on the waiting list. Would be an awesome rifle for my mountain goat hunt in September.
I am kicking myself for not jumping on this. Hope it turns out as awesome as it sounds and that SAS can do it again.

You're going to get your chance next week. I've not announced the second group buy intentionally. The MRC guys have been good to me and I wanted to give them plenty of time to catch up. They're already screwing barrels on the actions for the second batch.

Different chambering, same twist, standard gray stock, no flutes. I wanted to keep the cost down a bit on this one. Jeff told me yesterday the second batch would be done late September - mid-October.

I'll start the thread VERY SOON....
Don't tease me unless you're gonna please me wink !?!?!

I'll keep my eyes open. Fingers crossed for Creedmoor.

Thanks a lot!
Damn! Maybe I should not look at the next offering.

I can't imagine doing a Creedmoor after doing the 260.

What else do you think would SING with a 1-8" twist in a short action MRC?
223?

22-250?

7mm-08?

A 284 would be a nice fit.

Yep +284 & 243.

I'd jump on a 7-08 and maybe 243.
6.5x284 would be tempting. Maybe 6.5saum

284 would interest me as well.

David
I would like to see it chambered in 30-06....

Dink
If the next one is a 243 8 twist put me down for one of those too. That action has enough space to run a 243 right.

Bb
When will you be announcing the second buy; and what the deuce is it?!
6.5 saum and I'll take one!

Any updates yet on how many were shipped?

DISREGARD saw the answer in the other thread.

SAS, thanks for the pics sir!!
Now that I'm down for #2 for #3 I'd like a 6.5 saum with a fluted barrel and about a .081" freebore. Neck diameter would depend on what the new hornady brass is set up for. 24" barrel please. #4 would be a ss 28 nosler 24" tube a 22" ss 9,3x62 with open sights and a barrel band for a sling would be tempting too.

Bb
You know a Whittaker/24hour group buy would be a perfect springboard for MRCs 'mini' action that they never got around to producing... wink

I'm thinking they could sell a few 8" twisted 223/223AIs...

And in Lefthand!
I speak with them about that monthly...
Glad to know the idea is not forgotten.
One of those 'minis' in a 17 Fireball, 17 Rem, 20 VarTarg or even a 204 Ruger as a walking varminter would be pretty cool...

Big +1 here.
Yep!!!
It's interesting to go back and read how many wanted a .243 with 1-8 twist but didn't buy one (yet). Curious if it's just the configuration, or something else holding them up. We did great putting our money where our mouths are for the 260. Hopefully we learn from this so there is a 3rd opportunity.
If the #2 buy doesn't move, there may not be a #3. I've committed and paid for the rifles. If I get stuck with a ton on the shelf, I'll have to evaluate things before I commit to another run.

I don't mind putting a few on the shelf, but a bunch is another story. We'll see how it goes.

Might be too soon since the first one. Folks haven't gotten to read range reports, see pics, etc. Wonder if 1 or 2 per year wouldn't be a better pace?
Good point.

I bet once people see how the first rifles shoot, and when pics surface this hunting season of the rifles laying next to dead stuff, the orders will flood in.

As of now, an order is kind of a shot in the dark about what you're going to get as far as quality, accuracy, etc.
Absolutely.... I'm waiting on range reports and field reviews from a select few of the guys that ordered .260s.

The .243's will sell out in two days.... as soon as the first few 1/2" groups and real life scoped weights under 8lbs show up in the hen house.

If folks struggle to get consistent sub-MOA accuracy, if the stock ergos aren't well received, or they weigh in chunky.... then maybe you'll struggle to sell the #2 lot... and #3 doesn't need to happen at all. I'm praying this isn't the case... because I'm with Billy on the .284...

My money is on option one.... but it very well could be option two. That's business... but I applaud SAS for having the balls to let the market decide.
*cough* Figure out a Canadian option........

This.

No way I would order one yet. Especially since one member has been waiting twelve weeks to get one back that's messed up (bought off the shelf. Not a group buy gun).

Dink
Pending a few reviews on the 1st buy, I'd put a deposit in now for a 6.5 saum

I may have that issue resolved. I'll know more early next week.

For me, it is purely a matter of timing. I picked up two other rifles in between ordering and receiving the LH MRC 6.5x55. As I mentioned over on the Lefty forum, the MRC action is the smoothest one I own. And it is pushing 1/2 moa when I do my part... No reason to think the .243 will not do the same...
